Executive Assessment of the European Market for Diesel Exhaust After Treatment Technologies - a new market research report on companiesandmarkets.com
The growth and development of diesel exhaust after-treatment systems are primarily dependant on the emissions norms that are being enforced in Europe. Therefore, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will be driven to develop emission-reduction technologies. Additionally, the increasing concern on reducing harmful vehicular emissions will drive end consumers to opt for low-exhaust emission vehicles. Diesel engines have witnessed significant growth in the European market in the last five to six years. Vehicle manufacturers are under pressure to reduce emissions and are therefore developing exhaust after-treatment technologies such as diesel particulate filters to reduce particulate matter, oxides of nitrogen (NOx) reduction technologies such as NOx traps and also SCR.
Strict emission standards will pave the way for significant growth in the exhaust
after-treatment technologies market. The Euro 5 norms for diesel passenger cars demand a significant reduction in particulate matter in the exhaust gas, whereas Euro 6 calls for significant reduction in NOx emissions from diesel engines. As internal engine measures are expensive, the most feasible option can be using exhaust after-treatment systems. Diesel particulate filters (DPFs) already have a high market penetration and moving towards Euro 6, such a situation is expected for NOx reduction technologies as well.
Stabilising costs is likely to be the most challenging task for suppliers and vehicle manufacturers. Exhaust after-treatment technologies such as diesel particulate filters use precious metals in the system. The rising price of these materials will affect the price of the system as a whole. Monitoring the availability of AdBlue and maintaining a continuous supply of AdBlue in SCR systems is also anticipated to be a challenge. This is because driving a vehicle without AdBlue in the storage tank is similar to not having a SCR system at all. DPFs already have a high penetration in diesel engines and most vehicles use DPFs in order to reduce particulate matter to maintain the limits specified in Euro 5. The rising costs of raw materials have forced an increase in costs of the entire systems.
Additionally, the quality of materials in the systems cannot be compromised. Maintaining the right balance between low costs and high quality will be challenging for suppliers as well as vehicle manufacturers. Developing cost-effective materials for use in exhaust after-treatment systems will be required to maintain the cost at competitive levels. These materials should also be able to withstand the high temperatures of exhaust gases.
The following technologies are covered in this research:
Diesel particulate filters
Selective catalytic reduction (SCR)
