2013-01-28 10:14:20 - A recent report published by the Royal College of Physicians has highlighted the need for a new approach over obesity in the UK. It is estimated that obesity is costing the NHS a reported £5billlion per annum and there are concerns that this figure could potentially double by 2050.
The report went on to say that current training in the management of obesity was inadequate and that there was a lack of integration of professionals and defined routes for treatments associated with obesity. It further outlined a need for multidisciplinary teams, including physicians, psychiatrists, dietitians and professionals in physical exercise to share training and knowledge with the ultimate goal being a streamlined treatment for obesity. The report also determined that general practitioners should have a pivotal role in the prevention and management of obesity.
PronoKal, a medically supervised weight loss company located in Harley Street have been giving specific training to physicians and looking after patients with a multi-disciplinary approach that has been welcomed by leading UK medical professionals since
2004. This streamlined approach which has proved so successful has led to PronoKal operating in 10 countries to date and with 310,000 patients being treated. Furthermore there are over 3000 prescribing doctors currently engaged with the Pronokal method worldwide.
Luis Rodriguez, Director of www.pronokal.co.uk said, “The report published by the Royal College of Physicians is significant in that their professional opinions and recommendations are very much in line with how we have been successfully operating for over 8 years. Indeed the report echoes the views of many general practitioners that I continue to speak to as part of my role in the UK on a daily basis. One such practitioner is Dr Jack Edmonds, who is also based on Harley Street and until recently was President of the Independent Doctors Federation. He now actively recommends PronoKal to patients and has seen tremendous results. Mr Bryan Mayou, a leading plastic surgeon based in London who is recognised as introducing liposuction to the UK in 1982 is also a great supporter of this streamlined process. He actually lost 20kg with the PronoKal method and now some 18 months later has still maintained his target weight.
The key to beating obesity in the UK and as outlined in this recent report is that obesity medicine be established as a sub-speciality for general practitioners. This would provide advanced specialist knowledge and training and would open the doors to a multidisciplinary approach which undoubtedly would reduce the number of obese people in the UK and make significant savings against the rising costs to the NHS.”
