SYLEENA JOHNSON DEFENDS DAD’S LAWSUIT AGAINST WEST AND JAY-Z
R&B singer SYLEENA JOHNSON has come to her father Syl’s defence as he battles rap superstars KANYE WEST and JAY-Z for copyright cash, insisting he just "wants his money".
The ageing soul musician launched legal action against the duo earlier this month (Oct11) after hearing his song Different Strokes sampled on Watch The Throne track The Joy.
Syl Johnson claims representatives for West had initially approached him for permission to use the track on a tune for his 2010 album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, but the request was not approved in time for its release. It subsequently appeared on West’s recent collaborative disc with Jay-Z reportedly without Johnson’s knowledge - and now the veteran is demanding compensation for knowing and wilful misappropriation.
But his daughter Syleena claims her father has no problems with the rappers themselves - it’s more of a business issue with the stars’ label bosses at Universal Music, Def Jam Records and Roc-A-Fella Records - all of whom are also named as defendants in the legal papers.
In a radio interview with Sirius XM, she says, "It’d be cool if everybody would stop saying, ‘Your dad is suing Kanye,’ because I don’t really feel like that’s the case…
"I think that his issue is not necessarily with them (West and Jay-Z); it’s with the label, because it’s their responsibility to get the clearance for the song. When I talk to my dad, he’s not like, ‘I’m gonna get Kanye’, or, ‘I’m gonna get Jay-Z’. Real talk, if somebody samples Kanye or Jay-Z, or whoever else, I’m sure they would go after the person for their money too… He just wants his money." Ironically, Syleena Johnson has a good relationship with West - she previously lent her vocals to the Stronger hitmaker’s 2004 single All Falls Down.
