POINTER SISTERS GIG AXED AFTER COSTLY RUGBY WORLD CUP
Promoters in New Zealand have been forced to cancel a concert by THE POINTER SISTERS after over-spending on the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
The I’m So Excited hitmakers were due to perform at the TSB Bank Arena in Wellington next month (23Nov11) but the gig has been called off.
Organisers blamed disappointing ticket sales and high entrance fees for World Cup matches, which started on 9 September (11) and is the largest sporting event ever held in the country.
Pacific Entertainment general manager Robyn Alexander says, "Sadly the hype surrounding the World Cup, as it has with many other shows, has literally sucked out disposable income…
"I do think a lot of people like them (the Pointer Sisters), but the World Cup has taken a lot of money out of the economy… Yesterday people were lining up to pay $1,500, $1,600, $1,700 to buy tickets to the Cup final. That means there’s just not going to be any money around for a while because we are all struggling anyway." The trio’s show in Auckland on 22 November (11) is still scheduled to go ahead as planned.
