Tycoon RICHARD BRANSON has pulled out of a charity swimming event in the aftermath of a blaze that wrecked his island retreat.
The businessman was left devastated after fire ripped through his luxury property on Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands earlier this month (Aug11).
Branson was due to join a team of stars swimming the Irish Sea from Dublin, Ireland to Holyhead in Wales in aid of cancer charities next month (Sep11) - but he’s now pulled out to spend time with his family following the disaster.
Boyzone singer Ronan Keating, who is also taking part in the event, told followers on Twitter.com, "Just found out richardbranson has had to pull out of JoinTheSwim. Devastated but totally understand. Hope you (sic) doing ok mate."

Actress NIKKI BLONSKY suffered a broken tooth after a freak accident involving a watch as Hurricane Irene hit New York.
The Hairspray star was on lockdown as the storm lashed the city on Sunday (28Aug11), but she was left in desperate need of a dentist after cracking her tooth.
In a series of posts on her Twitter.com page, she writes, "Never try 2 change time on a watch… u pop da crown with ur (your) teeth aka (also known as) #justcrackedatooth.
"And of course I chip my darn tooth during a hurricane when dentists will prob not be (in) their offices… just my luck."

Supermodel MIRANDA KERR has launched a TV campaign in a bid to prevent youngsters committing suicide, after her family was rocked by tragedy.
Orlando Bloom’s wife was left devastated when her cousin took his life in 2009 and she has been vocal in her bid to raise suicide prevention awareness.
Kerr, along with her mother, father and brother, launched an Australian TV campaign for the Too Many, Too Soon Kids Helpline over the weekend (27-28Aug11), and the star has urged troubled youngsters to use the phone network to seek help and advice.
She says, "The sadness of losing someone, especially in these circumstances, is something we live with and we continually question how it could be prevented.
"There’s not really a great awareness about the services available to kids and that’s why I’m behind this great cause. If we can reach just one child and let them know there is someone out there who wants to listen, that could help to save their life. I believe if my cousin had known of Kids Helpline it may well have saved his life."

TV chiefs in Britain will air a controversial comedy movie about suicide bombers as part of a season of shows marking the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.
Bosses at the Channel 4 network have confirmed they will broadcast satirist Chris Morris’ film Four Lions - about a terrorist cell’s plot to target the London Marathon - early next month (Sep11).
They insist the movie, starring Riz Ahmed, will not be shown on September 11, but will be aired as part of a season of programmes commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 2001 atrocity.
The network’s chief creative officer, Jay Hunt, says, "I’ve just had a robust conversation with Chris Morris about Four Lions and the scheduling of that and how close it is to 9/11. I think we should absolutely continue to push those boundaries.
"It is going out in the next week-and-a-half or so. It is not going out on 9/11 itself. But it is around then because it speaks to that issue." Victims of the 7/7 terror attacks in London called for a boycott of Four Lions following its release last year (10). In 2001, Morris sparked outrage when he produced a spoof TV news show mocking the media’s coverage of paedophilia.

LADY GAGA has landed the first 2011 MTV Video Music Awards honour.
Her Born This Way promo was named Best Video with a Message shortly before the ceremony began in Los Angeles on Sunday night (28Aug11).
She beat out videos from Pink, Katy Perry and Eminem and Rihanna to land the new award.
The pop superstar was unavailable to pick up her prize on the ‘black’ carpet outside the ceremony because she was prepping for her much-anticipated opening number.

JUSTIN BIEBER has taken over ASHTON KUTCHER’s prankster role in a revamped version of TV show PUNK’D, targeting TAYLOR SWIFT in the first episode.
Kutcher revealed earlier this year (11) that teaming up with the Baby hitmaker to relaunch the MTV series - in which the actor played practical jokes on unsuspecting stars - was a "possibility".
And the series kicked off in Los Angeles on Friday (26Aug11), with Bieber acting as the first celebrity trickster, filming a joke on his pal Swift, according to Access Hollywood.
No details of the prank have been revealed, but the website reports Kutcher will serve as the series creator, while different stars will take turns to host and play pranks on other celebrities in each episode.

LINDSAY LOHAN snubbed rapper PITBULL’s invite to join him at the MTV Video Music Awards.
The actress issued legal proceedings against the hitmaker after claiming he defamed her in the lyrics of his number one hit Give Me Everything, prompting Pitbull to insist he never meant to hurt the Mean Girls star in a video posted on his website.
And to prove he wasn’t out to poke fun at Lohan, he invited her to attend the VMAs with him.
But it was clear she wasn’t going to take him up on his offer and he instead showed up to the event on Sunday (28Aug11) with actress Natalie Martinez.
Asked if he was bothered by the snub, Pitbull said, "As far as the whole Lindsay Lohan thing… it’s a positive record, it was a positive message. I’m in no way shape or form here to degrade, defamate (sic) or hurt. I’m only here to help."

Billionaire businessman RICHARD BRANSON’s mother has opened up about the terrifying moment his island retreat burned down as KATE WINSLET carried her to safety.
The Titanic actress and 20 other guests were on vacation at the tycoon’s Necker Island retreat in the British Virgin Islands when lightning hit the wooden property and set it ablaze.
Branson has since thanked Winslet for carrying his frail 90-year-old mother Eve to safety, and now she has opened up about the ordeal, detailing how Winslet insisted on making sure she was out of harm’s way before setting her down.
She tells Britain’s The Mail On Sunday, "It was dark, I had no contact lenses in and couldn’t see a thing. The steps were slippery and the rain and wind were lashing down while the fire flourished hot on our tail, smoke and flames chasing us on our way… It was only at that moment I became aware of Kate Winslet and her two children, Mia and Joe, behind me.
"Thankfully, Kate swept me into her arms and we all arrived safely at the bottom of the steps. I had said: ‘Come on, Kate. I’m far too heavy for you. Let me do it on my own.’ But Kate wanted to help. She said: ‘No, you’re not too heavy.’ How thankful she must have been that I was pretty light, having recently lost a little bit of weight through illness.
"It was pitch dark, pouring with rain and the flames were coming after us. As I looked back over her shoulder, seeing beam after beam collapsing into the raging fire, I felt it was the devil’s henchman chasing us."

British singer WILL YOUNG has shot straight to the top of the U.K. album chart with his latest release ECHOES.
The Leave Right Now hitmaker doubled up sales of second place Joe McElderry’s record Classic to land the number one slot.
Adele’s 21 is at three, while her debut 19 held steady at five. Rapper Wretch 32’s Black And White is a new entry at four.
In the U.K. singles chart, British singer Olly Murs has taken the top spot with Heart Skips A Beat, while DJ Calvin Harris is another new entry at two with Feel So Close. Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera rounds out the top three.

BOB GELDOF’s wildchild daughter Peaches hates her tattoos so much she wishes she could "graft a completely new skin" for herself.
The socialite has an extensive range of body art, with more than 20 inkings including the words "Ex Valentine" around the top of her left arm, a daisy chain which stretches from her knee to her chest, lyrics from a Nick Cave song on her back, and a dove on her hip.
Geldof, who got her first tattoo at the age of 14, has previously admitted to being addicted to the ink needle and happily posed for photos showing off the designs - but the 22 year old now wishes she could remove them all.
She tells Britain’s The Sunday Telegraph, "Fourteen-year-old girls should not be allowed to have tattoos. The ones I have from that age are more like prison tattoos.
"I recently came to the conclusion that I regret every single tattoo I’ve ever had done. I have so many bad tattoos. Some of them I look at now and find them horrendous. If I could graft a completely new skin for myself, I would."

OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN almost missed out on the biggest hit of her career when she considered not releasing PHYSICAL in 1981 - because of the song’s sexual message.
The Aussie singer has revealed she worried the tune was too suggestive and risque.
She tells Spinner.com, "I had a bit of a panic session. I went, ‘Oh my God! I can’t put this out. It’s way too radical! What are people going to think of me?’ "I said to my manager, ‘You’ve got to pull it. It’s too cheeky.’ And he said, ‘It’s too late, it’s gone to radio.’ Of course, it went to number one in, like, four weeks. I’ve learned to live with it." The song topped the Billboard charts for 10 weeks over Christmas.
The track recently enjoyed a rebirth thanks to Jane Lynch’s hilarious duet with Newton-John on hit TV show Glee.
The two women revamped the gym session-themed music video that accompanied the song.
The singer adds, "They recreated the whole set. It’s sort of following me around again."

MIKE SKINNER thanked fans for their support at Britain’s Reading festival on Sunday night (28Aug11) as his band THE STREETS played their last ever set at the annual event.
The frontman is planning to quit the music industry for a career as an actor after completing his current tour in October (11).
He took to the stage for an emotional swansong and he marked the end of his slot by reaching out to his loyal fans.
Skinner told the crowd, "Thank you so much for listening to me chat s**t once more. I’m going to be gone now ‘cos I need to do some other s**t with my life. I’m getting too old…

THE VACCINES frontman JUSTIN YOUNG is to undergo throat surgery after problems with his voice forced the British band to axe a string of concerts.
The singer/guitarist underwent an operation in January (11) and the Post Break-Up Sex hitmakers called off several concerts to allow him time to recover.
But the problems with his voice have returned, forcing the band to cancel shows in Holland, Austria and Northern Ireland earlier this month (Aug11) - and Young has now revealed he faces further surgery.
He says, "I have got to have another operation on my voice. I keep getting haemorrhages and I get lumps. It’s really disgusting but my vocal cords can’t shut properly and then I can’t sing."

Revered moviemaker LUC BESSON’s new film THE LADY has been selected to open the Rome Film Festival in Italy in October (11).
The movie - a biopic of Burmese human rights activist Aung San Suu Kyi - will feature Michelle Yeoh and David Thewlis.
Aung San Suu Kyi was awarded the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize.
The Rome Film Festival runs from 27 October to 4 November (11).

British playwright DAVID HARE has been named the recipient of the 2011 PEN/Pinter Prize.
The honour, established in memory of British Nobel Prize-winning playwright Harold Pinter, is the latest in a long line of accolades for Hare, who also boasts a BAFTA, a Golden Bear from the Berlin film festival and an Olivier Award.
In congratulating Hare as this year’s recipient, Pinter’s widow Antonio Fraser says, "In the course of his long, distinguished career, David Hare has never failed to speak out fearlessly on the subject of politics in the broadest sense." Hare’s hit plays include Racing Demon and Plenty.

The film production company behind hits like BLACK SWAN and THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT is to cease business in 2013 to allow CEO MIKE MEDAVOY to spend more time with his family.
Phoenix Films boss Medavoy tells Variety he plans to sell off the company’s impressive library in two years, but will continue to produce movies, like What to Expect When You’re Expecting and The Last Voyage of Demeter, under the banner.
He says, "I want to do what excites me and I want to spend more time with my family, since I now have a 13-year-old son." Medavoy has been a former head of operations at United Artists, Orion and Columbia.
Seven of the 300-plus films he has produced have won Oscars.

Actress LAETITIA CASTA was shocked when she asked BRIGITTE BARDOT for advice on how to play the screen icon in upcoming SERGE GAINSBOURG biopic A HEROIC LIFE - because she told her to pretend she wanted to make love with everyone.
Bardot agreed to chat with Casta as the young star prepared to portray her in the film, but the actress was not expecting the veteran to be so candid.
She tells The Hollywood Reporter, "She said, ‘When you walk into a room, put your head up and look like you want to f**k everybody. You are the most beautiful woman in the world, enjoy it, it isn’t gonna last.’" Casta reveals she has spoken to Bardot since making the film and she doesn’t think the French icon was impressed.

Actress MARGARET MCPOYLE has sparked a criminal investigation after complaining to Los Angeles police about an alleged online stalker.
The Always Sunny in Philadelphia star claims she was sent a string of degrading messages and vulgar images via the internet.
McPoyle also alleges she revealed several pictures via email spelling out the word ‘c**t’ in blood with a moving finger and has asked cops to investigate who is sending the messages.
Officers obtained a search warrant to investigate the anonymous online pest, tracing the messages back to a Tumblr.com account by the name of ‘dirtythesy’ and have retrieved the user’s email and IP addresses.
According to documents, obtained by TMZ.com, police now plan to launch a criminal investigation.
