PRODUCERS KEPT WAYNE’S COWBOY ROOTS A SECRET FROM FILM CAST
The producers and director of new sci-fi western COWBOYS & ALIENS kept star BRENDAN WAYNE’s famous family ties from the rest of the cast and crew for fear of turning JOHN WAYNE’s grandson into a novelty on set.
The actor plays Keith Carradine’s sheriff’s deputy in the Jon Favreau film, but no one knew of his links to The Duke until he brought it up.
Wayne tells Cowboys & Indians magazine, "They didn’t make a big deal about it… I realised that they’d sort of kept it a secret because they wanted me to have my own identity on the set.
"They wanted to be sure everyone just knew me as Brendan and I thought that was really thoughtful and respectful of them." And Wayne insists his grandfather would have approved of the quirky western, in which Carradine, himself, Daniel Craig and bad guy Harrison Ford team up to battle aliens in the Wild West.
He adds, "He was always up for a challenge, so I would imagine he would have thought it was cool… I think he would have rolled his eyes at first, but then, based on what I’ve seen, he would have been really proud of it as a western."
