Singer ROBIN GIBB helped kickstart the building of a new war memorial at a turf-cutting ceremony in London on Wednesday (04May11).
The Bee Gees legend spearheaded a campaign for the tribute, which will honour the airmen who gave their lives in World War II, and he helped raise the $9 million (£5.6 million) needed for the monument.
Gibb saw his efforts finally pay off as he joined veterans and dignitaries at a turf-cutting ceremony, which marked the start of construction in the British capital’s Green Park.
And the star admits he was filled with pride at the accomplishment: "The campaign for a permanent memorial to the men of bomber command has been very close to my heart and after three years’ labour of love the day has come that the memorial is finally being built.
"It’s been a lot of work, and there have been times it looked like it may not happen but we reached our goal! This memorial is one of the biggest in the centre of London, and to be involved in this is a tremendous feeling." The memorial will be unveiled in May 2012.

Pop star LADY GAGA sobbed as she watched the World Trade Center’s North Tower come crashing down before her very eyes on September 11, 2001.
It emerged on Friday (06May11) that, following the death of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden at the weekend (30Apr11-01May11), Gaga had finally spoken out about the events of 9/11, when two hijacked airplanes flew into the World Trade Center in New York.
Bosses at Washington, D.C. radio station Hot 99.5 have now released audio footage in which an emotional Gaga tells of her heartbreak on that tragic day, recalling how she ran away from her teachers at the Convent of the Sacred Heart to watch the second of the Twin Towers crumble.
The singer tells radio DJ Toby Knapp, "As a New Yorker, it’s very intense. I’ve never really spoken about this before but I was in New York on September 11 and I watched the Towers fall with all my girlfriends from the roof of our school. The whole city was covered in ashes.
"There was a television playing (the news) and we were all crying (at school). I remember we broke into the playground on the roof and the teachers were all screaming at us to stay inside. But we couldn’t even believe that it was real so we all broke in to the playground on the roof. I just remember we actually watched the second tower fall because in New York, you can see them from any roof, they were so big. We were all crying.
"I remember leaving the school, walking with my dad home. We saw all these really young guys from the (stock) market, from Wall Street, they were all covered in soot and all you could see was the water on their eyes from the tears. It was a really intense day… and I think for a lot of Americans it really was. You can see anyone’s humanity in a moment like that."

FLAVOR FLAV is facing legal action from a former business partner who has accused the rapper of cutting him out of a $30,000 (£18,750) deal when starting up his fried chicken restaurant.
Tommy Karas claims he found investors for Flav’s Fried Chicken in Las Vegas, Nevada earlier this year (11) and was responsible for handling finances for the venture, which is due to open later this month (May11).
Karas alleges the Public Enemy star found backers to make a $30,000 (£18,750) investment in the fast food joint, pushing Karas out of the deal.
According to TMZ.com, Karas has consulted his lawyers over the matter after Las Vegas Metro Police Department officials allegedly decided not to pursue the report he filed because "it’s a civil matter".
Flavor Flav’s fast food franchise hit the headlines last month (Apr11) after he withdrew his name from the Iowa branch, accusing another business partner, Nick Cimino, of bad management.

The adopted son of PINK FLOYD star DAVID GILMOUR has been warned he faces a jail sentence after he admitted his involvement in the London student riots.
Disgraced university undergraduate Charlie Gilmour was caught on camera clambering over the Cenotaph war memorial in December (10) when a demonstration against an increase in college tuition fees turned violent.
He was arrested days later and accused of involvement in an attack on a car carrying British royal Charles, Prince of Wales and his wife Camilla during the riots, and smashing a store window in a separate incident on the same day.
On Friday (06May11), Gilmour attended a hearing at Kingston Crown Court in south west London and pleaded guilty to violent disorder. It was not specified which incident he admitted to.
The 21 year old, who is a student at acclaimed Cambridge University, was warned he faces a possible prison term when he is sentenced later this year (11).
Judge Nicholas Price, QC, told Gilmour, "You must understand that your plea of guilty to violent disorder is a serious matter and it may be that the proper course would be one of immediate custody." Gilmour, who apologised for his behaviour in a statement after the riots, is due back in court on 8 July (11). He was freed on conditional bail so he can complete his university exams.

LEA MICHELE is thankful none of her GLEE castmates are dating, as she’s sure real-life romances would create "awkward tensions" on set.
The actress, who is dating Broadway star Theo Stockman, has previously been forced to deny she enjoyed a relationship with Matthew Morrison, the actor who plays her onscreen teacher Mr. Schuester.
Jenna Ushkowitz has also been linked to co-star Kevin McHale, but Michele reveals none of the stars of the show are romancing each other - and she’s glad.
She tells Britain’s Cosmopolitan magazine, "(The public) thinks that everyone is sleeping with everyone. We spend every minute of every day together, and when we’re finished we all go out to dinner, so of course they think we’re hooking up.
"I’m thankful that it doesn’t happen. If people hooked up, there’d be awkward tensions." And Morrison echoes Michele’s sentiments, adding, "I think it’s funny… but it’s a little embarrassing because they’re supposedly my students. DEMI LOVATO has credited music with helping her "stay strong" through "tough times" - and now she’s shared her motivational playlist with fans.
The Disney star checked into a treatment centre last year (10) to deal with a number of issues, including anorexia and bulimia, self-harming and bipolar disorder.
Lovato is keen to conquer her personal problems, and insists music is helping her through her issues. In an article for the Seventeen website, she writes, "Music has always been a huge part of my life and has helped me (through) some tough times. Certain songs always give me confidence, put me in a good mood, and inspire me. Here’s a list of some of my favourites - the music that helps keep me feeling positive and reminds me to stay strong." Explaining why she likes Eminem’s track Not Afraid, she adds: "This song is really inspiring to me because Eminem’s album was based on his recovery. This song made me feel confident in conquering my diseases." In reference to the song Surrender by BarlowGirl, she writes, "In order to recover from any addiction, you have to surrender and recognise what you need to overcome. This was a song I had on repeat in treatment knowing that if I surrender, beating this is possible." Under-fire fashion king JOHN GALLIANO’s woes are mounting - he’s facing a lawsuit for defamation after accusing his former lawyer of embezzlement.
Galliano was sacked as head designer for Christian Dior after he was arrested by cops in Paris, France in February (11) over allegations he racially abused a couple at a bar and praised Adolf Hitler.
On Wednesday (04May11), it emerged he had sacked his attorney Stephane Zerbib and later made a complaint of "aggravated breach of trust" - but Zerbib has now hit back with a counter-suit for defamation, according to AFP.
Officials in Paris are due to announce on 12 May (11) when Galliano will go on trial over the allegations of making racist and anti-Semitic remarks.

Canadian singer NELLY FURTADO has applauded U.S. President BARACK OBAMA for refusing to release photographic evidence of terrorist leader OSAMA BIN LADEN’s death.
The American leader announced on Sunday (01May11) that the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks had died at the hands of the U.S. military, and he was subsequently buried at sea.
Conspiracy theorists called for Obama to release a picture of bin Laden’s body to prove he really had died, but the Democrat refused, insisting U.S. officials do not want to parade images as "trophies" as it could incite retaliation attacks.
And Furtado is glad a grisly image of bin Laden with a bullet wound to the head is being kept hidden away.
In a post on her Twitter.com page, she writes, "So grateful that we’ll have one less violent photo circulating throughout the world. White House has good taste."

CHARLIE SHEEN is making plans to revamp his controversial one-man show and take it to Europe and Asia.
The actor recently wrapped his My Violent Torpedo Of Truth/Death Is Not An Option tour of the U.S. and Canada, which was met with mixed reviews by North American audiences.
Sheen has now announced he’ll be visiting fans overseas with stops in Europe and Asia.
The former Two and a Half Men star admits he’ll need to play to smaller crowds and make a few tweaks to the show format to ensure it’s a hit.
He tells Australian radio station Nova969, "Why don’t I take this thing on the road to Australia, parts of Europe, parts of Asia. If I pick out six cities over two weeks and if it wasn’t about violent torpedoes and truth seeking but more about an evening with Charlie Sheen, if I told people what to expect, maybe they wouldn’t heckle me like the drunk clowns that they are.
"It would seem like the European mentalities would give me a little more time and a little more patience to actually listen and embrace a format like that, where they come in knowing what to expect." Sheen, who is also taking his show to Australia in June (11), has pledged to give proceeds from the overseas tour to his Torpedoes Against Tornados charity, which he set up to help raise money for victims of the recent tornados in the U.S.

British singer EMMA BUNTON has given birth to her second child, a baby boy.
The former Spice Girls star was admitted to hospital on Thursday (05May11) and welcomed little Tate on Friday morning (06May11).
Bunton’s publicist confirms to WENN that her fiance Jade Jones was present at the birth of the tot, who weighed in at exactly seven pounds (3.18 kilograms).
Taking to her Twitter.com blog on Friday, Bunton gushes, "Our beautiful son Tate has arrived safe and sound! We are all so happy and excited. Thanks and love to you all." Bunton and Jones are already parents to son Beau, three.

Singer and humanitarian ANNIE LENNOX was honoured for her charity work on Wednesday (04May11) at the Great Scot Awards in London.
The Aberdeen-born Eurythmics star was handed the Great Scot Award for Charity at the annual Johnnie Walker Blue Label Great Scot Awards, which celebrates Scottish people who have made an "outstanding contribution" to their country.

BOYZONE star MIKEY GRAHAM has been left "shaken" after confronting an intruder at his home on Saturday (30Apr11).
The singer was at his family property in Dublin, Ireland with his wife Karen and daughter Sienna when a man broke in.
Graham tackled the trespasser and admits he was petrified during the incident.
He tells Britain’s The Sun, "It was terrifying but we are OK. Police are investigating. We are still very shaken by it all but the police are dealing with it now." According to the publication, local police are interviewing a number of suspects.

The family of rock legend JIMI HENDRIX is taking legal action over the rights to the soundtrack from two London concerts in 1969.
The rocker performed a brace of nights at the Royal Albert Hall venue, and representatives for the Hendrix Estate are adamant it owns the audio recordings of the shows.
They have now filed suit against an unnamed company, whose representatives claim the Purple Haze hitmaker signed over the rights to the recordings for use in a movie, according to TMZ.com.
Lawyers for the Hendrix Estate are demanding the administrators are legally deemed the owners of the recordings, and want $2 million (£1.25 million) in legal costs and expenses.
