MCGEE: ‘PUNK LIFESTYLE TO BLAME FOR UNTIMELY DEATHS’

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:24 am

Former music mogul ALAN MCGEE has blamed punk stars’ "rock and roll lifestyle" for claiming the lives of his heroes before their time.
McGee, who founded independent label Creation Records, is convinced punk rockers suffer untimely deaths because of their self-destructive behaviour in the ’70s.
In a column in Britain’s The Sun, he writes, "There was a nihilism to punk which is partly what made it so great. Sadly, that rock and roll lifestyle is not very compatible with good health.
"We’ve lost so many great people from that era tragically young. Ironically, a lot of the previous generation who we call the rock ‘n’ rollers are still around - Paul McCartney and the Stones to name a few.
"I’ve had my heart broken by the deaths of so many punk rockers - Joe Strummer, The Ramones, Tony Wilson and Malcolm McLaren particularly. They were my heroes." And McGee admits the music world lost another great when former X-Ray Spex frontwoman Poly Styrene passed away, aged just 53, on Monday (25Apr11).
He adds, "She was so iconic to me and so many people. Poly wasn’t a conventional kind of sexy woman but she was still very sexy. She paved the way for lots of unconventional female bands and female singers who came later… Poly paved the way for people including Madonna and Lady Gaga. You wonder if they would have even existed without Poly and Ari Up from The Slits, who died last year."

OLSENS VOW TO KEEP FASHION LINE MADE IN AMERICA

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:21 am

Former child stars-turned-designer duo MARY-KATE and ASHLEY OLSEN are supporting the U.S. economy by employing American workers to make their clothes.
The twin sisters insist on using garment factories in New York and Los Angeles to produce their high-end label The Row in a bid to save the country’s flagging manufacturing companies.
Ashley tells Newsweek magazine, "I really believe in our being able to create here and utilise the skills that people have here. The skill set is here.
"Our main issue is that some of the machinery is gone, so some knitwear is produced in Italy. But whether it’s clothing or cars, I believe in manufacturing as close to home as possible…
"We really want The Row to be an American luxury brand. We believe in not just American by representation but American by make."

ACTOR LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO WED LAVIGNE

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 2:48 am

A little-known actor has launched an online bid to raise cash to fund a trip to Los Angeles so he can propose to pop star AVRIL LAVIGNE.
Jason Selvig wants to raise $5,000 (£3,125) to cover his travel costs and expenses - and strangely enough, people are already pledging to help him succeed via funding platform website Kickstarter.com.
Smitten Selvig states he has been in love with the Canadian pop star, who is currently dating Kim Kardashian’s half-brother Brody Jenner, but has "never had the opportunity to be in the same room with her".
The blurb on Kickstarter.com reads, "In order to finally marry Avril (or at least date her long enough to get into one of those real-couple fights), Jason needs to get to Los Angeles where she lives. After doing some math, he figured $5,000 would be enough to fly him out there, put him up, and get him in the same room as her so that he can take her out for a nice night on the town." Selvig also hopes to film his experience and turn it into "a pretty awesome documentary short".
So far, Selvig has raised $30 (£18.80) from three pledges.

The squeamish star, who hosts TV contest America’s Got Talent, is worried he’ll pass out when his wife needs him most.
He says, "I’m not too good with hospitals. I get a little woozy if there’s blood… I can’t really handle that… Hopefully, if they assign me, like, a little nurse I’ll be right there.
"I can’t watch those doctor (TV) shows and stuff. Like, Mariah can watch them and be eating… That’s nasty." FURTADO ENCOURAGES CANADIAN YOUTH TO VOTE

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 2:45 am

Pop star NELLY FURTADO is urging young Canadians to take part in an upcoming election after she spent years ignoring politics and refusing to vote.
The 32-year-old singer admits she used a number of excuses before finally getting involved and casting her ballot - and now she’s calling on fans in her native Canada to join her at the polling station.
In a video posted on YouTube.com, Furtado says, "I’m a dummy, I used to not vote. I used to be out of the loop and feel detached from politics, like, ‘Yeah, I’m Canadian but (it’s) boring, I don’t know what to do, I don’t know anything - I’d rather not vote! I don’t know who to vote for? Everybody sucks, what’s the point? Voting’s lame. I’m too busy.’ "I’m over that now because I started to vote a few years ago and it feels amazing. I love voting because it makes me feel like a real citizen of this great country we call Canada.
"The youth across Canada are getting so excited about voting and that’s amazing… Show up and vote because it’s fun. It’s actually a thrill, a rush. I’m gonna be there, it’s gonna be a party! You’re voting for you, you’re voting for the youth, our demographic. Politicians cater to their audience so let’s become a part of that audience." Canada’s 2011 general election will be held on 2 May (11).

SHEARS THRILLED TO WORK ON MAUPIN’S TALES OF THE CITY MUSICAL

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 2:45 am

SCISSOR SISTERS frontman JAKE SHEARS jumped at the chance to create the score for the new stage adaptation of ARMISTEAD MAUPIN’s classic TALES OF THE CITY stories - because the books helped him come to terms with his sexuality when he was a teenager.
The author’s stories about gay and lesbian life in bohemian 1970s San Francisco has already been turned into a cult TV series, starring Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis, and now Shears has created the music for a new version of the saga, which launches in California next month (May11).
And he reveals he has a very special connection with Maupin’s work.
He tells RollingStone.com, "When I was 13, there were these two gay guys in my hometown and I think they probably picked up on the fact that I am gay. They were really lovely, they gave me a lot of music to listen to and turned me on to new stuff.
"One day, Sean, one of them, gave me a copy of Tales of the City and said, ‘I think you’ll really like this, you should read it.’ I fell in love with the characters and read the entire series. The books were, for me, a rite of passage.
"Anybody can pick them up and really get into them. There’s lots of lascivious behaviour, but somehow they remain really kind of beautiful and nonjudgmental and strangely wholesome." Shears insists he won’t be stepping out onstage to guest in the musical he has created: "I couldn’t act my way out of a wet paper bag. I’m a terrible, terrible, terrible actor… The characters have a lot of depth and the performances are super-important. I just don’t have the skills."

His daughter Liv Tyler recently referenced her dad’s new summer song, revealing he played it to her while driving around the Hollywood Hills.
She said, "We were driving through the Hills in his fancy sports car with the top down… He was blasting me his new single; it’s amazing and beautiful."
