Hip-hop mogul RUSSELL SIMMONS is to be honoured at the 22nd annual Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Awards.
The Def Jam Records co-founder will receive the Excellence in Media Award at the ceremony in recognition of his work promoting gay rights.
Simmons, a longtime campaigner for equal rights, wrote an open letter to former New York Governor David Paterson in 2009 to praise the leader for supporting gay marriage.
Previous winners of the GLAAD honour include Joy Behar and model-turned-TV personality Tyra Banks.
The prizegiving will take place in New York City on 19 March (11).

Singer PRINCE has been hit with a $700,000 (£467,000) lawsuit over allegedly unpaid legal fees.
Attorneys at Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler filed suit against the Purple Rain hitmaker at Manhattan’s Supreme Court on Tuesday (01Mar11), accusing him of failing to pay for their handling of cases in Ireland, California and New York.
Lawyers at the New York City firm also claim they were not compensated for representing Prince in his divorce from Manuela Testolini in 2006.
The star, real name Prince Rogers Nelson, has allegedly paid $125,000 (£83,000) but still owes $700,000 in fees for legal services, according to the lawsuit.

Veteran actor WILLIAM SHATNER has saved a family from homelessness - with money raised by selling off his kidney stone.
The Star Trek legend managed to convince bosses at gambling website GoldenPalace.com to pay $21,000 (£14,000) for the stone in 2005.
With the help of his Boston Legal castmates, Shatner took the profits and made a total donation of $84,000 (£56,000) to housing charity Habitat for Humanity in the U.S.
The money was used to build a house for a family left homeless after Hurricane Katrina, and Shatner is bursting with pride over his good deed.
He says, "I have a picture of a lovely family with three kids, living in a home that my kidney stone built."

British boxing champion RICKY HATTON is set to be a dad again, just months after completing a stint in rehab.
The sports star hit headlines in September (10) when photographs of him allegedly snorting cocaine in a hotel room were published in a U.K. tabloid.
The former WBA Welterweight Champion admitted he had been "dabbling" with drugs and subsequently checked into London’s The Priory clinic, before leaving a month later (Oct10).
Now, Hatton and his fiancee Jennifer Dooley are focusing on happier news after learning they will become parents this summer (11).
Hatton tells Britain’s The Sun, "I’m looking forward to becoming a father again - and I’m excited that Jenny’s going to become a mother. I think she’ll make a great mum.
"She has been my rock and has stood through me (sic) during some difficult times." The star is already dad to 10-year-old Campbell from a previous relationship.

HARVEY WEINSTEIN was determined to distribute political film MIRAL despite protests from his friends, branding the movie an "important" step in helping the public understand conflicts around the world.
The Weinstein Company backed director Julian Schnabel’s 2010 biographical picture about Hind Husseini’s effort to establish an orphanage in Jerusalem.
Weinstein insists he felt compelled to attach himself to the project in a bid to raise awareness of global hostilities - and he hopes the movie will help cinema-goers understand the current conflicts over power in Libya and Egypt.
He tells Piers Morgan Tonight, "Friends of mine who are Jewish say, ‘How the hell can you be involved in a movie like this?’ "The simple answer is if you don’t tell the story from both sides you will never understand everything we’re watching in Libya, Egypt, etc.
"I know you’re not supposed to be political but you can’t exist in this world if you aren’t. This is an important movie and I don’t care how controversial or how many people tell us not to show it, it makes me more determined."

British actors DAVID TENNANT and JIM BROADBENT are set to go head-to-head for the Best Actor prize at the U.K.’s Royal Television Society Programme Awards.
Tennant’s turn in small screen drama Single Father and Broadbent’s role in Any Human Heart have been recognised with nominations at the annual ceremony. They will go up against Johnny Harris, star of This Is England ‘86.
Veteran star Julie Walters has been shortlisted for the Best Actress trophy for her lead role in Mo, alongside Natalie Press (Five Daughters) and Vicky McClure (This Is England ‘86).
Mo, a biopic of late British politician Mo Mowlam, is also up for best drama writing and single drama.
The awards are due to be handed out on 15 March (11) in London.

Actress OLIVIA WILDE has moved on from her marriage split - she has reportedly found love with RYAN GOSLING.
A spokesperson confirmed last month (Feb11) that the Tron: Legacy star had separated from guitarist and Italian prince Tao Ruspoli, who she married in 2003 when she was just 19.

Australian star MATTHEW NEWTON is mentally ill and has been living in "utter fear" for his life since leaving a clinic, according to his lawyer.
The actor appeared before a judge on Wednesday (02Mar11) following his arrest last month (Feb11) for allegedly breaching an apprehended violence order (AVO) by trying to contact his ex-girlfriend, actress Rachael Taylor.
His attorney Chris Murphy told Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court the 34 year old made a "mistake" by calling Taylor.
Murphy explained that his client is suffering from a psychiatric illness and wants to have the legal matter dealt with under the Mental Health Act.
The lawyer told the court, "He (Newton) does not have any addictions, he has a psychiatric illness." Murphy also revealed that Newton is terrified for his life after he was knocked to the ground by a large man in December (10).
He claimed the attack was inspired by journalist Paul Kent’s campaign to members of the public to punch the actor in the mouth.
Murphy added, "(Newton) received several sutures to his face and suffered a broken nose. I have done two cases, where a man has been king-hit (knocked out) and killed. (Newton) lives in utter fear and he has got a mental illness." Kent called for Newton to be given a "good hiding, a smack in the mouth" in August (10) after the star was accused of assaulting Taylor.
The matter was adjourned for a mental health issue hearing next month (13Apr11), according to the AAP.

CHARLIE SHEEN played baseball with his dad on the set of classic war movie APOCALYPSE NOW in a desperate effort to cheer up the actor as he battled alcoholism.
Martin Sheen has spoken candidly about his battle with booze on the set of the film and director Francois Ford Coppola recently revealed in a GQ interview that his star was so close to death at 36 a priest was called to the set to read him his last rites.
The moviemaker insists Charlie was hit hardest by his father’s struggles.
When his remarks were read to the Wall Street star during a TV interview with Access Hollywood, Sheen recalled the trip to the Philippines, where he watched his father battle the booze.
The embattled star says, "It was shocking to see him walk up on a cane, but I brought a couple of gloves and a baseball and we just threw the ball every day… It was the only exercise he could really do and it was the only thing I knew how to do that I could offer… Those are fabulous memories." The younger Sheen is now battling his own substance abuse issues and is currently in rehab after a series of wild parties, which ended with his hospitalisation with an apparent hernia.

Movie mogul HARVEY WEINSTEIN has urged CHARLIE SHEEN to settle his ongoing war of words with TV bosses over the future of TWO AND A HALF MEN - because he’s "playing a losing game" by taking on CBS chiefs.
The troubled actor is currently in the middle of a dispute with network chiefs, who have scrapped the remainder of the eighth season of the hit show after Sheen went public with his criticisms of series creator Chuck Lorre last week (ends27Feb11).
The future of the show remains in jeopardy, with Sheen demanding to be paid $3 million (£1.8 million) per episode to return to work.
CBS President Les Moonves has since spoken out about the situation, admitting, "Going down the road… I don’t know what’s going to happen. I hope it’s back. We’ll see." And now Weinstein has urged Sheen to make a deal to resume his duties on the family show.
He tells CNN chat show host Piers Morgan, "I worked with Charlie Sheen, he is one of the best actors when motivated. You see performances in Wall Street or Platoon, in our case he did Scary Movie and he sent up his own image.
"It’s hard to judge but he’s got a great family with Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez and I hope the family and everybody rallies around him and they come up with a good decision.
"I know Les Moonves… Charlie’s playing a losing game. Les is maverick in this situation, he’s holding the parts. I trust Les to make the right decision (about the future of show). He’s cool, he’s smart." Weinstein has also publicly backed the actor, insisting he’d employ him on a future project: "I’d hire Charlie Sheen to do Scary Movie 4, 5, 6, 7." Sheen prompted the show’s initial hiatus after he was hospitalised with a reported hernia following a wild night of partying at his Hollywood home in January (11) and subsequently sought professional help.

SIENNA MILLER feels "picked apart" by speculation surrounding her recent split from JUDE LAW, insisting it’s "not a nice feeling" hearing gossip about her love life.
The stars announced last month (Feb11) that they had parted ways, less than a year after going public with their rekindled relationship last May (10). They previously called off their engagement in 2006 after Law’s alleged affair with his children’s nanny was exposed in the tabloids.

ELTON JOHN and his partner DAVID FURNISH have been invited to the royal wedding in London next month (Apr11) - much to the rocker’s surprise.
The Rocket Man recently stated he was not expecting to be invited to perform for foreign royals and dignitaries at the wedding, while quietly trying to avoid telling the media he would be a guest.
He ruled out a performance on the big day - insisting he didn’t really know Prince William and his bride-to-be.
The rocker famously performed a special version of his Candle in the Wind hit at the funeral of William’s mother Princess Diana in 1997 - and music industry experts expected him to be at the top of the heir’s wish list when it came to selecting stars for his wedding to Kate Middleton.
But Elton told HollyScoop.com he’s not even expecting an invite, stating, "I don’t know them (princes William and Harry) very well. I’ve only met them twice - once when they were young and once at the Diana Memorial Concert… I knew their mother but that is the only thing. I’m not playing at the wedding. I haven’t been asked and I don’t expect to be asked." But he has confirmed he will be going to the 29 April ceremony, telling Canada’s CTV, "I’ve been trying to be discreet." Elton admits he’s a big fan of both William and his future wife, noting Middleton is like the prince’s beloved mother Diana "in personality," and adding, "She is very discreet, she is a very beautiful girl." He’s now hoping William will become king "at an early age" because "we need young people like him to lead".
He adds, "I think he will be a tremendous king - not that (his father) Charles won’t, but I think William will be tremendous." But the outspoken rocker couldn’t resist one criticism - he told reporters he thought William’s decision to give Kate his late mother’s sapphire engagement ring was "a little odd".

Pregnant singer PINK has poked fun at her pop peers BRITNEY SPEARS and CHRISTINA AGUILERA in a new tweet, joking that she’s the least trouble of the trio.
The Trouble hitmaker took to Twitter.com hours after Aguilera was released from jail after being arrested in West Hollywood for public intoxication and made the point that she has never spent time behind bars.
She wrote, "Out of Myself, Britney, and Christina - didn’t everyone think I was gonna be the troublemaker? LOOK MA!!! No CUFFS!!!" Spears has never been arrested but has had her run-ins with police.
In 2008, she lost custody of her two young sons after refusing to hand them over to ex-husband Kevin Federline at the end of an agreed visitation. She was hospitalised twice in a month and her father was handed control of her personal and financial affairs. The conservatorship still stands.
Meanwhile, Aguilera is still trying to revive her flagging career following a flop album, Bionic, in 2010 and a poorly-received movie debut in Burlesque.
Late last year (10), she split from her husband Jordan Bratman and was ridiculed twice last month (Feb11) for messing up the lyrics to the U.S. National Anthem at the Super Bowl and then stumbling onstage during a tribute to Aretha Franklin at the Grammy Awards.

The actor tells U.S. TV host Ellen DeGeneres, "I had never really hung out in Miami and one night in the middle of the shoot, the crew, a couple guys, said, ‘We’re going to get a beer somewhere.’ I said, ‘I’m not really into it.’ They said, ‘Come on,’ and kind of dragged me along.
"We ended up at a bar where my wife was the bartender. I literally saw her across a crowded room… and eight years and four kids later, that’s my life.
"I don’t know how else our paths would have crossed if that didn’t happen… The moral is that when you’re tired, suck it up and go to the bar because you might meet your wife."

JUSTIN BIEBER and SELENA GOMEZ stepped out in Los Angeles together for the second time in a week on Tuesday (01Mar10) to mark the BABY hitmaker’s birthday.

JUSTIN BIEBER’s hair is a hot item on auction website eBay.com as bids pass $12,000 (£8,000).
The pop superstar cut his famous hair last month (Feb11) and he is offering his locks to various charities in an effort to help them raise money.
And one lot has already proven to be a big success on eBay.com.
The hair up for grabs on the auction site was given to chat show host Ellen DeGeneres during a taping of her U.S. show on 22 February (11).
The Baby singer told DeGeneres, "I’m giving pieces of it (hair) to different people. We’re doing something special. We want you to donate it to whatever charity you want." DeGeneres plans to hand over the proceeds from the hair auction to California animal rescue centre The Gentle Barn.
The auction ends on Wednesday (02Mar11).
