The special effects expert who created JAMES FRANCO’s prosthetic arm for 127 HOURS has revealed his work is now aiding medical science.
Tony Gardner designed 10 different arms for the actor to use in the harrowing Danny Boyle survival movie, each one worth $10,000 (£6,670) - and now his prosthetics are being used as training tools for young doctors and surgeons.
He tells The Hollywood Reporter, "I got a lot of great feedback from doctors about my work in the film. So I started a business making neonatal training aids for intensive care doctors.
"Some kids are born with their intestines inside of their umbilical cord… and all other sorts of issues. We made a kit where you can put these prosthetic pieces on medical dummies, so doctors in training can practice in a real-life scenario.
"It feels good to be doing something helpful other than just entertainment."

The Cleopatra star was recently admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles to treat symptoms of congestive heart failure.
She’s continuing to make promising progress and marked her special day on Sunday (27Feb11) by tuning in to the annual Hollywood prizegiving - and she’s tipped the British royal drama, which is nominated in 12 categories, to win big at the prestigious ceremony.
Her representative tells the AFP, "She plans to watch the Academy Awards with family and close friends and will be rooting for The King’s Speech.
"A proper birthday celebration will be planned for when she returns home."

Oscar-nominated actor-turned-filmmaker JAMES FRANCO is planning to shoot a real knife fight between two Los Angeles gangs as part of his next movie project.
The 127 Hours star is teaming up with director Harmony Korine to go underground for the forthcoming film and they are hoping to catch some real-life street action for the movie’s climax.
But their gritty vision for the project has worried producers.
A source tells the New York Post’s Page Six column, "They are looking to film two actual street gangs doing a fight scene. The twist is they want the two gangs to fight, using real knives. The production team is panicked that they’ll end up with blood, injuries and potentially dead bodies on set." A representative for Korine has confirmed the joint venture, but has refused to shed light on specific details: "I can confirm that there is indeed a piece of video art in the works involving gang fights by James and Harmony." Harmony is known for his controversial film work, including 1995 movie Kids, which documented teenage sex and violence, and he gained a cult following with the release of 1997’s Gummo, about a group of teen cat killers.

Actress KIM CATTRALL was left speechless after discovering her late grandfather was a bigamist as she looked to solve the mystery behind his disappearance on ancestry show WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?.
The Sex and the City star returned to her native Liverpool, England and delved deep into her family history to get to the bottom of the scandal surrounding her maternal granddad, George Baugh, who abandoned Cattrall’s grandmother after 10 years of marriage, leaving her to bring up their three daughters on her own during a depression.
Cattrall’s mum, Shane, never saw her father again after he left in 1938, but the actress was stunned to find out the truth behind Baugh’s disappearance - he walked away from his family to start a new life with another woman.
During the historical show, which aired in the U.S. on Friday (25Feb11), Cattrall learned Baugh wed Isabella Oliver in August 1939, a year after meeting, and they lived in a village just three hours away from his existing family.
The couple went on to have four children, with the youngest, George Baugh, born in 1959 - three years after Shane gave birth to Cattrall.
Admitting she was "disappointed" by Baugh’s adultery, the star said, "That son of a b**ch. He was a bigamist… I knew he was gutsy, but now… he was a criminal. He left in 1938; within a year, he was remarried." Cattrall’s grandfather later emigrated to Australia before passing away in 1974, without ever getting back in touch with the family he had left behind.

Animated Disney film GNOMEO & JULIET has surprised movie experts by triumphing over OWEN WILSON’s new comedy HALL PASS to top the U.S. box office chart in its third week of release.
The 3D family favourite, which is based on the Shakespeare tale and features music by Sir Elton John, climbed to number one with takings of $14.2 million (£9.47 million), boosting its total gross in the U.S. to $75.1 million (£50 million).
Hall Pass, directed by the Farrelly Brothers, debuted in second place with $13.4 million (£8.9 million), while Liam Neeson’s former chart-topper Unknown fell to three.
Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never is in fourth position, while Nicolas Cage’s new action movie Drive Angry only just managed to scrape into the top five with first-week earnings of $5.1 million (£3.4 million).

Buddies WOODY HARRELSON and OWEN WILSON have created a hilarious new paintball challenge at their homes in Hawaii.
Wilson received a paintball gun as a gift at Christmas (10) and when he tired of shooting trees and other stationery objects, he called on neighbour Harrelson to help him come up with a more dangerous game.
He explains, "I only got one (gun) and there’s only so long you can shoot at the trees and stuff… What we came up with… we were playing dominoes and the loser had to run from the other guy - the other guy got, like, 20 yards away and he ran from the corner of the house, touched the tree…
"It started where you could kinda put on a jacket… but we were like, ‘The welts aren’t that bad when it’s like that.’ Then we reduced it to, you could just wear your shorts, and that was it." Wilson aired video footage of the two pals playing the painful new game, and arguing about the number of shots fired, on Thursday night’s (24Jan11) Jimmy Kimmel Live! in America.

CHARLIE SHEEN has become obsessed with his father MARTIN’s classic war movie APOCALYPSE NOW and had a bloody slogan from the film tattooed onto his chest.
The troubled actor, whose hit sitcom Two and a Half Men has been scrapped for the rest of the season, had the words "Death From Above" inked onto his skin earlier this week (ends27Feb11), claiming the phrase from the Vietnam War epic symbolises his own crazy life.
Explaining the tattoo, which is complete with blood dripping from the phrase onto an apple, he tells U.S. radio host Alex Jones, "It’s the banner from the death card that Kilgore (Robert Duvall’s character) is throwing on his victims. But also falling from it is the apple from The Giving Tree. There’s my life. Deal with it." Sheen also revealed he sees parts of himself in every major character in the 1979 film, from his dad Martin Sheen’s Captain Benjamin L. Willard, to Dennis Hopper as an American photojournalist, to Marlon Brando’s renegade Colonel Walter E. Kurtz.
Quoting from Brando’s character, he adds, "’You have the right to kill me, but you do not have the right to judge me’. Boom. That’s the whole movie. That’s life." Sheen’s future on Two and a Half Men was thrown into doubt after he publicly lambasted show creator Chuck Lorre, prompting producers to pull the sitcom for the rest of its current season.

CHARLIE SHEEN’s big plans for his TV return have been dealt a blow - bosses at U.S. cable network HBO have dismissed reports they are in talks with the troubled actor to launch a new show.
The embattled star’s hit sitcom Two and a Half Men has been scrapped for the remainder of this season following a series of foul-mouthed outbursts directed at show creator Chuck Lorre.
Sheen, who recently underwent rehab treatment at his Los Angeles home, has continued to verbally attack Lorre and TV executives at CBS for the decision, while he has also been boasting about new small screen ventures.
In various rants to the press on Friday (25Feb11), the funnyman claimed he was in "talks" with HBO programme directors "to do something beyond… this pukefest", referring to Two and a Half Men, while he also alleged the new project would be called Sheen’s Corner.
But the reports are news to HBO officials - a representative for the network tells the New York Post there are no such plans to work with Sheen.
The denial comes as the actor prepares to lift the lid on his eight years on Two and a Half Men for an explosive book, titled When The Laughter Stopped, while he will reveal all in his first TV interview since the scandal kicked off on U.S. news show 20/20, which airs on Tuesday (01Mar11).

R&B singer CIARA sparked an online war of words with RIHANNA on Friday (25Feb11) after she accused the UMBRELLA superstar of ignoring her at a recent party.
Ciara made the allegation during an appearance on Joan Rivers’ Fashion Police show on America’s E! network after she was quizzed by the outlandish host about what she thought of Rihanna’s style.
She told Rivers, "I ran into (Rihanna) recently at a party. She wasn’t the nicest. It’s crazy, because I’ve always loved and respected what she’s done in fashion. It wasn’t the most pleasant run-in." Rihanna quickly retorted with a message on her Twitter.com page, joking that she must have mistaken Ciara for hired help.
She wrote, "My bad Ci, did I 4get (forget) to tip u? Howrudeofme." The mocking message prompted Ciara to respond, "Trust me Rihanna u dont want to see me on or off the stage," to which Rihanna came back with, "U gangsta huh? Haaa…Good luck with bookin that stage u speak of." The response is believed to have stemmed from Ciara’s recent accusations that her record label have not backed her career financially, forcing her to pay for her own videos and promotion.
However, the feud was short-lived - the Bajan beauty backed down minutes later and offered a truce, writing, "Ciara baby, I love u girl! U hurt my feelings real bad on TV! I’m heartbroken! That’s y (why) I retaliated this way! So sorry! Letsmakeup." And Ciara immediately accepted her apology, replying, "Rhi u know its always been love since day 1! Doing shows/everything. You threw me off in that party! Apology accepted. Let’s chat in person."

Hollywood actress KATE HUDSON has reportedly bought a $6.4 million (£4 million) home in London with her English rocker boyfriend MATT BELLAMY.
The star, who is expecting a baby with the Muse frontman, recently revealed she was house hunting in the U.K. as she was keen to spend half of her time in her lover’s homeland.
She told OK! magazine, "I have a feeling I’ll probably be spending a lot more time here. I don’t know about full moves but a half move probably. I love it here but we both travel so much. I’ll be around, wandering the streets!" And now the pair has found the perfect property in north London, which has a nursery and guest rooms for Hudson’s famous mum Goldie Hawn and her longterm partner Kurt Russell, according to Britain’s Mail on Sunday.
A source tells the publication, ‘Kate is ready to put down roots in the U.K. She is in the process of filling out visa forms that will enable her to live in England with Matt for at least six months of the year.
"Kate looks at the U.K. as a great place to raise a family. She sees herself living and working from London for the long haul."

Rock icons ROGER TAYLOR and BRIAN MAY have marked QUEEN’s 40th anniversary by opening a new London exhibition documenting the band’s early years.
Stormtroopers in Stilettos takes fans back in time to the group’s first five years together as the Bohemian Rhapsody hitmakers rose to fame in the 1970s with their flamboyant frontman Freddie Mercury.
Drummer Taylor admits the display at the Old Truman Brewery has brought back "forgotten" memories, adding, "It’s quite shocking for us to suddenly bring back what happened all those years ago in such vivid detail." But guitarist May hopes any budding musicians visiting the show will be inspired by Queen’s formative work - and learn the importance of style over image, reports the BBC.
He says, "Once you come into this exhibition you realise that we were just boys and we got together with a dream. We worked night and day for many years and we were very lucky.
"You don’t buy in your style - it comes from inside you and it’s very organic. I think that is a lesson to people to have belief in your vision." Taylor and May, who launched the exhibit on Friday (25Feb11), have also marked the band’s landmark anniversary by remastering and reissuing Queen’s first five albums.
Stormtroopers in Stilettos will run until 12 March (11).

British singer CHERYL COLE’s ex-husband, soccer star ASHLEY COLE, is in trouble with his club’s bosses after allegedly shooting an intern with an air rifle, according to U.K. reports.
The sports star, who plays for English soccer giant Chelsea Football Club, reportedly left work experience student Tom Cowan badly wounded after he accidentally shot him at close range with a high-powered .22 rifle at the club’s training ground in Surrey, England.
According to Britain’s News of the World, the 21 year old had be given medical treatment on the spot last Sunday (20Feb11), but had to head to hospital two days later as the injury worsened.
Cole reportedly had no idea the weapon was loaded - but his actions have landed him in trouble with the club’s managers.
A source tells the newspaper, "It’s truly inconceivable that a Premier League footballer could bring a gun to the training ground. But Ashley pulled the rifle from a box and started larking (playing) about with it in the changing room.
"Cole didn’t know the gun was loaded but it’s a disgrace. His behaviour beggars belief." Another insider adds, "Tom screamed as this lead pellet hit him in the side. He was bleeding profusely. He was in agony and seemed to go into shock as he steadied himself and sat down on one of the benches." Cheryl Cole, a superstar in Britain thanks to her judging role on Simon Cowell’s TV talent show The X Factor, split from the soccer player after allegations of his infidelity hit the headlines early in 2010. Their divorce was finalised in September (10).

Rapper JUVENILE is in trouble with police again after he was arrested on suspicion of drug possession on Saturday (26Feb11).
The hip-hop star, real name Terius Gray, was busted in Sterlington, Louisiana after cops discovered he was driving on a suspended licence and allegedly found marijuana on his person.
He was released on $750 (£500) bond, reports TMZ.com.
Juvenile’s latest arrest comes just over six months after he pleaded guilty to a separate misdemeanour pot possession charge. He was handed a suspended three-month jail sentence, ordered to serve six months probation and pay fines.

SLAYER have suffered another blow to their tour plans after frontman TOM ARAYA was hospitalised moments before the heavy rockers were due onstage in Sydney, Australia on Sunday (27Feb11).
The thrash metal stars had to axe their set at the touring Soundwave Festival at late notice when Araya was admitted to a medical centre with an unknown illness.
However, the singer is expected to return to the stage alongside Iron Maiden, Slash and Queens of the Stone Age for the next date on the trek - Soundwave promoter AJ Maddah has confirmed he "will be OK" for the Melbourne stop on 4 March (11).
Araya’s hospitalisation is the latest health woe to hit the band - guitarist Jeff Hanneman recently had to pull out of Slayer’s tour after being hospitalised with a nasty flesh-eating disease.
Hanneman has been temporarily replaced on the road by Exodus star Gary Holt.

GLEE star MATTHEW MORRISON was taken on a trip down memory lane when he recently appeared on U.S. TV’s LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN - he landed his big break on the same programme 12 years ago.
Morrison made his TV debut on funnyman Letterman’s show in 1999, when he was a budding actor studying at the prestigious New York University.
He landed a spot as a member of a spoof boyband for one episode of the programme, which kick-started his whole career.
Returning to the Late Show earlier this week (ends27Feb11), he told Letterman, "My career started right there on this stage. Back in 1999 I was an NYU college kid… My second audition was for this fake boyband that you put together called Fresh Step… So I auditioned for it and I got it." Letterman showed a clip of the star singing and dancing in the fake five piece and Morrison made sure to thank the presenter for helping him break into showbusiness.
The appearance made him a hit with friends back in his native California and that gig led him to the bright lights of Broadway: "It was such a validation for all my friends at home because they were sitting on their couch… ’cause you know, you grow up in Southern California, you’re going to cold New York, then they’re like, ‘Oh, he’s on the Late Show, in a boyband, he’s made it!’ So thank you. And then I dropped out (of college).
"After that, the guy who was the choreographer for that (boyband) thing was the choreographer for a show called Footloose, which was my first Broadway show. Legitimate stepping stone. You saved me about 75 grand on tuition!"

THE KING’S SPEECH has been given a huge pre-Oscars boost - U.S. censors have agreed to release a new cut of the film with a PG-13 rating.
Officials at the Motion Picture Association of America’s ratings board have given producers Bob and Harvey Weinstein permission to screen both the new family-friendly alternative and the existing R-rated version in cinemas at the same time.
Swear words that feature prominently in the original movie have been removed in the PG-13 version.
The King’s Speech is a favourite to pick up the Best Picture Oscar at the Academy Awards on Sunday (27Feb11).

ZSA ZSA GABOR’s financial woes have worsened after her California mansion was targeted by burglars in the early hours of Sunday (27Feb11).
The ailing actress’ husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt, claims he was awoken by a loud sound in the middle of the night and found two men ransacking their sprawling Bel Air home.
He tells TMZ.com he attempted to chase the intruders out with a baseball bat, but fell and hurt his hip as they made their escape.
According to Von Anhalt, the burglars got as far as the living room and he believes they made off with several of the couple’s prized possessions, including paintings, a laptop, a camera and some statues.
Police were called to the scene to investigate the break-in.
The incident comes at a difficult time for the couple - Gabor, 94, has suffered a number of health problems in recent months and recently spent time in hospital to treat an infection in her amputated leg, while von Anhalt has been forced to put their home on the market in a bid to help pay her spiralling medical bills.
