JEREMY IRONS has opted to miss this year’s (11) glitzy Oscars bash - because he wants to stay at home to smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol at his will.
The star, who has previously won a Best Actor Academy Award, has been invited to the ceremony on Sunday (27Feb11).
But he won’t be joining the stars of the big screen by walking down the infamous red carpet - because he’s a chronic smoker who misses most of the show to stand outside puffing away.
And Irons can’t wait to be in the comfort of his home to watch the 2011 event.
He tells U.S. host Jimmy Fallon, "I’m sometimes there but it’s not a great evening. I have to step out for a cigarette every five minutes. I’m in the cold missing the show I’ve gone all that way to see. The person who gets me on stage for my guest bit can’t find me and there’s panic. It’s midnight before you eat. It’s much more fun at home.
"This way I can smoke and drink and have a really good time."

British royal CHARLES, PRINCE OF WALES took the opportunity to ask CATHERINE ZETA-JONES about her husband MICHAEL DOUGLAS’ health when he presented her with a CBE medal on Thursday (24Feb11).
The Chicago actress and Douglas took their kids Dylan and Carys to the ceremony at Buckingham Palace, where she was honoured as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her charity work and services to the film industry.
The British royal was "concerned" over Douglas, who was treated for grade four throat cancer last year (10).
And Zeta-Jones has revealed the prince asked after the Wall Street actor when he pinned the medal on to her dress.
She tells Britain’s Daily Mail, "Obviously we talked about Michael. The last time I saw His Royal Highness, Michael had just got his treatment so he was concerned, but he was very happy to hear that he’s well on the road to recovery. His recovery is going great and the tumour is gone. It’s the beginning of another road, but it is a better one. The past year has tested us.
"It means a lot to come home with my family and to be honoured in this way. It’s going next to my Oscar and my Bafta. I’m very patriotic and I can’t wait for the Royal Wedding."

SHARON STONE has spoken out after winning a restraining order against an allegedly "mentally unstable" man, insisting she feels "safe" now he is in psychiatric care.
The Basic Instinct star was left fearing for her life after Bradly Gooden was discovered by cops in her Los Angeles home earlier this month (Feb11).
According to official documents, Gooden told cops he was the son of former U.S. First Lady Hillary Clinton and had travelled to California from Ohio, telling officers, "It’s now my house… I live here." Stone filed a request for a restraining order, and on Thursday (24Feb11) she was granted a temporary ban against Gooden, who she has described as an "obsessed, mentally unstable, delusional person".
Now the actress has opened up about the latest ruling, revealing her relief over the ban and thanking police for handling the scary situation so well.
She tells CNN broadcaster Piers Morgan, "We have described him as mentally ill and he is currently in a lockdown at the psychiatric unit. So we feel safe.
"My feeling was to just react logically and we called the police and the police really were wonderful. We’re so lucky to have such a terrific police unit here and they knew exactly what to do and they did a very good job… it’s been handled really well."

The producers of sitcom TWO AND A HALF MEN have shut down production on the series for the rest of the season following troubled star CHARLIE SHEEN’s radio attack on creator and writer CHUCK LORRE.
Production on the set was suspended at the end of January (11) to allow Sheen to attend rehab for substance abuse issues; filming was scheduled to commence on Monday (28Feb11).
But, after an angry Sheen took to the airwaves on Thursday (24Feb11) to attack Lorre for allegedly masterminding the ongoing work stoppage, accusing the writer of taking money out of his pocket and those of the cast and crew, producers have decided there will be no more Two and a Half Men this season.
A statement from CBS and Warner Bros. reads, "Based on the totality of Charlie Sheen’s statements, conduct and condition, CBS and Warner Bros. Television have decided to discontinue production of Two and a Half Men for the remainder of the season." In his rant, Sheen called Lorre "a stupid, stupid little man and a pu**y punk," and attacked the writer for his lack of "gratitude".
Calling into a U.S. radio show from the Bahamas, where he is currently on vacation, Sheen said, "I embarrassed him (Lorre) in front of his children and the world by healing at a pace that his un-evolved mind cannot process.
"Last I checked… I’ve spent, I think, close to the last decade effortlessly and magically converting your tin cans into pure gold. And the gratitude I get is this charlatan chose not to do his job, which is to write… Well, you’ve been warned, dude. Bring it."

KEVIN COSTNER faces losing a $4 million (£2.7 million) bronze sculpture which has been housed at his own museum, after its creator called for the actor to liquidate the model.
The Bodyguard star commissioned the bison structure in the 1990s for a failed resort venture in South Dakota.
According to the contract, obtained by TMZ.com, Costner promised to split the profits with artist Peggy Detmers if the hotel wasn’t built by 2010 or the statue wasn’t "agreeably displayed elsewhere".
But the hotel was not built by the scheduled date last year (10) and Detmers alleges she never agreed to let Costner place the sculpture in his museum, where it is currently located.
The artist is now calling for a judge to order him to liquidate the statue, which was constructed over the course of seven years.
Detmers was reportedly paid $310,000 (£206,667) for the project, while its current value is estimated at $4 million (£2.7 million).

PAMELA ANDERSON guzzled a glass of dirty water on U.S. TV on Thursday (24Feb11) to show how a cheap new filter process works.
The model/actress was promoting charity organisation Waves For Water on the Ellen DeGeneres Show when she agreed to show the host just how new technology turns filthy liquid into drinking water in the world’s poorest regions.
She pulled out a bucket full of dirty water, attached a filter hose and poured the liquid into a glass.
She said, "This is a crude, simple thing; it’s based on dialysis - if you can clean blood, you can clean water… It’s drinkable; I’m gonna drink it right now.
"I took them (filter bags) to India when I went to India and did a demonstration there and I gave it to a bunch of people and then they take it to different places and we just keep on kinda spreading it around… the slums of Brazil, my friends are there right now." DeGeneres then presented Anderson with a $10,000 (£6,000) cheque for the Waves For Water charity from water filter firm Aquasana.

SIR ELTON JOHN’s partner DAVID FURNISH has sparked speculation LADY GAGA is to be their son’s godmother - after refusing to deny reports she was chosen for the honour.
The Rocket Man and Furnish welcomed son Zachary into the world in December (10) by a surrogate mother.
Elton is godfather himself to two of Victoria and David Beckham’s sons, as well as to Elizabeth Hurley’s son, Damian.

Actress SHARON STONE is calling for U.S. authorities to provide LINDSAY LOHAN with the "healthcare that she needs" to help the star overcome her personal struggles.
The Mean Girls actress, who starred with Stone in 2006’s Bobby, is currently facing jail time as she prepares to go to trial over a felony theft charge stemming from allegations she stole a necklace.
Lohan also spent time behind bars and in rehab last year (10) to tackle substance abuse and alcohol problems.
Now Stone has reached out to Lohan, urging medical professionals to help the star beat her demons.
She tells CNN newsman Piers Morgan, "In her (Lohan’s) case particularly, I don’t think it’s a question of her youth but a question of the fact that she clearly needs some actual healthcare. And I think that perhaps because of her position it’s very difficult for the legal system to give her the actual practical care that she needs.
"I would not try to give her advice. I would just wish that there was some sort of way the system can somehow provide her with the actual healthcare that she needs." And Stone is relieved she didn’t rise to fame as a youngster like Lohan, because she feels she was able to handle the spotlight better as a "grounded adult".
She adds, "What happened to me was that I didn’t become famous as a child, as a teenager. I look at someone like Justin Bieber… I think that is a much more complex and difficult thing than what happened to me.
"When I became famous… I was 32, so I was a grounded adult. And because of that, and because I had such dear, good friends who guided me, friends in the entertainment business, grown women who had been through it - like Shirley MacLaine… They really talked to me about keeping my feet on the ground and really enjoying every moment and really staying in my gratitude and grace… These ladies who had really been through it in the classic period of filmmaking were just great to me."

Teen superstar JUSTIN BIEBER is planning a low-key affair for his 17th birthday next week (01Mar11) - he’ll spend the day relaxing with family and eating his grandma’s cheesecake.
The Baby hitmaker turns a year older on Tuesday (01Mar11) but he’s not planning to follow-up his 16th birthday with any party plans.

But the singer is refusing to party this year - because he wants to spend his time off with relatives before heading out on his world tour, which kicks off on 4 March.
He tells Entertainment Tonight, "I only have, like, four days (off), so I’m just going to relax because I start my world tour - so (I’m) just going to mentally prepare and just relax. No birthday bash… Hopefully my grandparents will be out here and I’ll be able to spend time, a little bit, with them. My grandma makes the best cheesecake - cherry cheesecake. She made that for my 13th birthday."

A long-forgotten U2 song has been unearthed for the soundtrack of a new film about the band’s early days.
Street Mission was a track recorded by Bono, The Edge, Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton in the late 1970s when they were The Hype.
In the upcoming British film Killing Bono, the track will be performed by the actors playing the Irish rockers.
The comedy, which is based on the lives of the two schoolmates who quit the band that was to become U2, is based on Neil McCormick’s memoirs, I Was Bono’s Doppelganger.
The Chronicles of Narnia star Ben Barnes will portray McCormick in the film, which is set for release in Britain in April (11).

ROGER DALTREY had not planned to perform with the FOO FIGHTERS at Britain’s NME Awards on Wednesday night (23Feb11) - revealing the rock collaboration happened "on the spot".
The Who legend appeared on stage with frontman Dave Grohl as he presented him with the Godlike Genius Award at the London ceremony.
Daltrey then shocked fans by joining in with the band’s live performance, taking to the mic for The Who’s track Young Man Blues, which the Foo Fighters often perform on tour.
But now the rocker has admitted he only agreed to sing with the band at the very last minute.
Daltrey explains, "They play it in their show sometimes, Young Man Blues, and (Grohl) said, ‘Would you sing it?’ That’s what rock ‘n’ roll used to be like, when people used to just get up and make it up on the spot. Which is what we did tonight - I hope we didn’t show up too much!"

Former model-turned-novelist TARA MOSS is "speechless" after giving birth to her first child.
The Australian beauty and her husband, poet and philosopher Berndt Sellheim, welcomed daughter Sapphira Jane into the world on Tuesday (22Feb11).
The tot weighed in at seven pounds (3.3 kilograms) and will take the surname Sellheim-Moss, reports the Sydney Daily Telegraph.
Moss confirmed the happy news on Twitter.com, writing, "Cuddling my beautiful daughter, Sapphira. Ineffable joy. Speechless."

A man has been sentenced to 25 years in jail on terrorism charges stemming from threats he made to SOUTH PARK bosses after they poked fun at Islamic prophet Mohammed in a controversial episode of the show.
Zachary Adam Chesser, 21, pleaded guilty in October (10) to urging viewers to attack producers of the programme by posting their home addresses online and adding: "Pay them a visit." Chesser, from Virginia, was said to have been infuriated by an episode aired last April (10) in which Mohammed was depicted dressed in a bear suit.
He also admitted providing material support to a terrorist group and inciting violent attacks in the U.S. - charges stemming from comments made on jihadist websites unrelated to the South Park broadcast.
Now Chesser has been sentenced to a lengthy prison spell.
U.S. attorney Neil MacBride says, "Zachary Chesser will spend 25 years in prison for advocating the murder of U.S. citizens for engaging in free speech about his religion. His actions caused people throughout the country to fear speaking out - even in jest - to avoid being labelled as enemies who deserved to be killed."

Actress ROSE MCGOWAN has won a temporary restraining order against a man she accused of harassing her.
The Charmed star requested the order against Luis Santo III, after he allegedly phoned the actress’ office, "insisting he is in love with me, demanding to talk to me even though I have never met him or spoken to him." McGowan filed legal documents in Los Angeles Superior Court claiming Santo threatened her employees when they refused to let him contact her.
Twitter.com messages he sent to McGowan were also added to the legal request, with one post reading, "Rose don’t hurt me! i will not kidding (sic). u will be gone." Santo has been ordered to stay 200 yards (183 metres) away from McGowan until a scheduled hearing on 11 March (11), when the actress will request a permanent restraining order.

CHARLIE SHEEN has launched a scathing attack on the creator of his hit show TWO AND A HALF MEN, slamming the TV writer for his lack of "gratitude".
Network bosses at CBS suspended filming on the sitcom at the end of January (11) to allow Sheen time to undergo rehab treatment for substance abuse issues.
The actor has previously blasted TV chiefs, including show creator Chuck Lorre, for staging a "forced hiatus", insisting he has been ready to return to work on the programme for weeks.
Lorre responded by poking fun at Sheen’s personal struggles and reports about his wild personal life in a brief statement, which was tagged on to the end of the credits to an episode earlier this month (Feb11).
He wrote, "I don’t drink. I don’t smoke. I don’t do drugs. I don’t have crazy, reckless sex with strangers. If Charlie Sheen outlives me, I’m gonna be really p**sed." Sheen initially laughed off Lorre’s dig, but now he has responded to the comments by declaring his "hate" for the writer, calling him a "turd" who is preventing the show from continuing.
