Music mogul EDGAR BRONFMAN, JR. has been ordered to pay a $6.7 million (GBP4.5 million) fine for misleading investors of his former company Vivendi Universal.
A French court found the Warner Music Group chairman and CEO guilty of manipulating stock prices on Friday (21Jan11) and also handed him a 15-month suspended prison sentence.
The charges date back a decade to 2001 and conclude a seven-year investigation into dealings at Europe’s biggest media group.
A statement from Bronfman reads, "As I have consistently stated, my trades were proper." Former Vivendi CEO Jean-Marie Messier was also convicted of misappropriation of company funds and misleading reporting. He was fined $200,000 (GBP133,000) and given a three-year suspended sentence, which he plans to appeal. He was cleared on another count of manipulating Vivendi’s stock price.
Bronfman, whose son Ben is hitmaker M.I.A.’s fiance, became part of the Vivendi group when Messier bought up Universal Studios, MCA Records and USA Networks in 1999.
A U.S. jury previously found Vivendi liable of misleading investors from 2000 to 2002.

PEARL JAM are struggling with scenes from their upcoming CAMERON CROWE documentary - because some footage brings back memories they’d rather forget.
The group gave Crowe, a longtime fan, access to rare video clips and backstage interviews and the Almost Famous director is now piecing the footage together for a major retrospective, which will mark the band’s 20th anniversary.
But bassist Jeff Ament admits a lot of the film will be difficult to watch.
He explains, "I just saw a rough cut. It was so f**king weird seeing footage of stuff I didn’t know anybody was taping at the time. The whole movie is Cameron’s love letter to us - but it’s equal parts complimentary and really painful.
"It shows our growing pains and some real bad times, including Roskilde… It was just really hard to watch." Nine Pearl Jam fans were trampled to death during the band’s set at the Danish festival in 2000.

Country star EDDIE MONTGOMERY has been given the best news as he prepares to return to the stage after taking time off to battle cancer - he has beaten the disease.
The singer underwent robotic surgery last month (Dec10) and his doctor, Thomas Kirk Slabaugh, Jr., has confirmed the operation was a success.
He says, "His cancer was completely excised, and he will not require further treatment for his prostate cancer in the future." Montgomery will return to the stage for his first public appearance of 2011 at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee on Friday night (21Jan11).
He and partner Troy Gentry will then depart for a week-long tour of U.S. military bases in South Korea and Japan.

U.S. author REYNOLDS PRICE has died after suffering a heart attack on Thursday (20Jan11). He was 77.
The Kate Vaiden novelist and university professor was taken ill last Sunday (16Jan11).
Price was a Rhodes Scholar and studied in Oxford, England.
He won the William Faulkner Award for a notable first novel for A Long and Happy Life in 1962. Kate Vaiden received the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1986.
He also published biblical translations A Palpable God and The Three Gospels and served as a professor at Duke University in North Carolina right up to his death.
He was confined to a wheelchair in 1984 after a cancer battle left him paralysed from the waist down.

TV stud LUKE PERRY missed out on acquiring the rights to adventurer ARON RALSTON’s survival story - DANNY BOYLE beat him to it and turned the saga into hit movie 127 HOURS.
Perry reveals he wanted to make the film about Ralston’s five-day battle for life trapped by a boulder in a Utah canyon with former Beverly Hills, 90210 castmate Brian Austin Green.
The actor says, "I tried to acquire the rights to that story and I wanted to do it with Brian Green… I thought he’d be great in that part, but Danny Boyle got it." But Perry insists he’s desperate to do something with Green after recently shooting TV western movie Goodnight For Justice with another old castmate, Jason Priestley.
He tells Access Hollywood, "Brian’s a great actor and I’ve always wanted to find something to do with him."

German porn star SEXY CORA has died at the age of 23 after suffering complications from a botched boob job.
The busty blonde, real name Carolin Ebert, underwent surgery to boost her chest size at the Alster Clinic in Hamburg earlier this month (Jan11), but she had a heart attack during the operation and fell into a coma.
She died on Thursday (20Jan11), nine days after going under the knife.
Two of the surgeons who performed the breast enhancement are now facing charges of negligent manslaughter.
Ebert’s husband tells a local newspaper, "The brain damage was too great. Her blood pressure dropped steadily, physiological functions gave out… then she went to sleep quietly." The model/actress previously hit the headlines in 2009 when she was hospitalised after attempting to set a new world record for the number of fellatios performed in 24 hours. She was forced to give up her goal of 200 after giving 75 men oral sex.

KEVIN SMITH’s new horror comedy RED STATE is shaping up to be one of the most controversial films ever shown at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah - with major protests planned at the film’s premiere on Sunday (23Jan11).
The film, which satirises Christian fundamentalism, has attracted the wrath of officials at the infamous Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas, who will picket outside the premiere.
In a strongly-worded press release, the church leaders claim Red State mocks "the servants of God" and they have branded Smith "a hater of Biblical proportions".
They’ve also attacked film festival founder Robert Redford and his Sundance directors for "enabling perverts at the Sundance Film Festival".
Publicity-loving Smith couldn’t be happier - and he hopes to add to the chaos in Sundance on Sunday by staging his own protest, against the religious zealots.
The film is one of the highlights at this year’s festival and Smith is planning to stage a public post-screening auction at the Eccles Theater for distribution rights to the movie.

KELSEY GRAMMER has asked a judge to officially end his marriage to estranged wife CAMILLE next week (begs24Jan11), so he can wed his new fiancee.
The former Frasier star is keen to make Kayte Walsh his fourth wife and the couple is hoping to exchange vows in February (11).
However, reality TV star Camille is refusing to put their divorce battle behind them so quickly and has asked the judge to deny Grammer’s request to dissolve their legal marital status while they continue to fight over finances.
Grammer has challenged the bid and filed new legal documents, arguing he’s accommodated almost all of Camille’s requests and wants a quickie divorce at their next court hearing on Wednesday (26Jan11).
The only outstanding condition is a $10 million (£6.6 million) bond he has been asked to put up to ensure both sides remain open and honest as they negotiate a split settlement, reports TMZ.com.

Actress MARIA BELLO is hobbling around Hollywood after breaking her tailbone while snowboarding.
The Cooler star was in Sun Valley, Idaho holidaying with her nine-year-old son when she fell and badly injured her butt.
As a result she has to take an inflatable doughnut pillow with her everywhere, so she can sit in comfort.
She says, "They said it takes six months to heal, maybe… It’s hard to sit down.
"They should tell you to wear a buttpad. They didn’t tell me to wear a buttpad." And Bello reveals she’s smiling through the pain as she promotes her new movie The Company Men - because she’s not on any painkillers.
She adds, "I was on them for a couple of days but I found myself really loopy."

QUENTIN TARANTINO will be the guest of honour at the Cesar Awards in France next month (Feb11) when he will be honoured for his career achievements.
The Pulp Fiction moviemaker, whose filmography also includes the Kill Bill franchise and Reservoir Dogs, will be hailed "a great international artist" at the 2011 event in Paris.
News of the French recognition comes one week after Tarantino was celebrated at the Critics’ Choice Awards for his ability to marry music and film on the big screen.
Meanwhile, Algerian film Of Gods and Men will be the main contender at France’s equivalent of the Oscars - it leads all nominations with 11, including one for Best Picture.
Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Write, which was released as The Ghost in Europe, garnered eight mentions and will also compete for the movie of the year accolade.
Other multiple nominees include Gainsbourg, a biopic about singer Serge Gainsbourg, which earned eight nods, and The Princess of Montpensier and On Tour, which both received seven nominations.
Stars set to battle for acting honours include Gerard Depardieu, Catherine Deneuve, Kristin Scott Thomas and Charlotte Gainsbourg, Serge’s daughter.
Meanwhile, The Social Network is up for Best Foreign Film, competing against sci-fi thriller Inception and Clint Eastwood’s Invictus, among others.
The annual awards will be hosted by Jodie Foster on 25 February (11).

R&B superstar USHER has laughed off a recent concert mishap which saw him kicked in the face by a fan, insisting it’s a "hazard of the job".
The Yeah! hitmaker plucked one lucky woman from the audience to join him onstage at his New York concert last month (Dec10) and proceeded to lay her down on a couch as he serenaded her with his ballad Trading Places.
But the show segment went awry when she accidentally knocked him in the face with her shoe, prompting Usher to quip, "We play rough in bed… We kick each other in the face and all that good stuff!" The embarrassed fan, Donnetia Rabb, 35, subsequently apologised to the singer and admitted to feeling guilty about drawing attention to "such a mishap during the evening of an amazing performance".
But Usher insists he wasn’t hurt and he isn’t mad at Rabb - because unscripted incidents during live shows are to be expected.
He tells Us Weekly magazine, "In all my years, this is one of the most interesting experiences. I got a kick out of it! It looked worse than it actually was."

JUSTIN BIEBER is aiming to become the next JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE and he’s hired superstar songwriter SEAN GARRETT to help reshape his sound.
The teenage pop star is currently working on the follow-up to his hit album My World 2.0. and he’s collaborating with Garrett, who has written songs for Usher, Ciara and Britney Spears.
Garrett admits 16-year-old Bieber is aiming for a more grown-up sound on the new record, and they are looking to Timberlake for inspiration.
He tells Billboard, "What we’re trying to do with Justin is to segue him into young adulthood. The one great thing about Justin Bieber is the fact that his fans are going to grow with him. So we want all the fans that started out with him to still be intrigued and excited about him, but we want to also stretch out a little bit and make the fans that are 22-23 years old love Justin as well.
"When Justin Timberlake went from the last album of ‘N Sync to his first solo album - I want to say (we’re aiming for) that level. That’s the bar for the type of song, that level of Cry Me a River, big records."

MOBB DEEP rapper PRODIGY will officially walk free from prison in March (11) after serving time for illegal weapons possession.
The hip-hop star was sentenced to three-and-a-half years behind bars in October 2007 after he was found with a .22 calibre pistol on his person following a 2006 arrest in New York.
Reports suggested Prodigy would be released in February (11) - but his Mobb Deep bandmate Havoc reveals they will be reunited a month later than expected.
During an appearance on Shade 45 radio on Thursday (20Jan11), Havoc told listeners his pal will regain his freedom on 7 March (11), when officials release him from the Mid-State Correctional Facility in New Jersey.
Prodigy has been keeping busy while serving time - he has started work on an autobiography.

Mexican pop star KALIMBA has been jailed following allegations he raped a teenage girl last month (Dec10).
The singer, a former member of pop group OV7, stands accused of sexually assaulting a 17 year old at a hotel in Chetumal, Quintana Roo on 19 December (10).
A Mexican judge recently issued a warrant for his arrest and the singer was detained in Texas, where he is said to have been attending to business, earlier this week (begs17Jan11), and deported to his homeland.
Kalimba has denied the rape allegations and is expected to appear before a judge to fight the charges later this month (Jan11).

Rapper EMINEM is inadvertently helping to feed the needy in Michigan after a deer became impaled on a fence on his property.
Local authorities were called out to the Not Afraid star’s gated home in Clinton Township on Wednesday (19Jan11) after his security system was set off, sparking suspicion of a possible intruder.
Cops failed to find any indication of a break-in and dismissed the incident as a false alarm.
However, it later emerged a deer had caused the security scare after attempting to jump over a spiked boundary fence.
Officers from the Department of Natural Resources attended the scene to investigate the incident. They later removed the dead deer and are planning to donate the meat to hungry families in the area, according to AllHipHop.com.

THOR director KENNETH BRANAGH is taking a break from movies to star in a play in his Northern Ireland hometown.
The British thespian stepped behind the camera last year (10) to direct the upcoming superhero blockbuster, but he’s now returning to his dramatic roots by taking on a role in French farce The Painkiller by Francis Veber.
Branagh, who was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, will head home to appear at the city’s Lyric Theatre from 23 September (11) until 16 October (11).
He will appear alongside Welsh TV star Rob Brydon, according to Variety.

The socialite and businesswoman wed Jared Kushner in October 2009 and the couple has announced baby news.
