NELSON MANDELA was discharged from hospital on Friday (28Jan11) after receiving treatment for a respiratory infection.
The former South African president was admitted to the Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg earlier this week (begs24Jan11), and he was diagnosed with an acute respiratory infection.
The 92 year old is said to have responded "very well" to treatment, and will now be monitored carefully while recovering at home.
Surgeon General Vijay Ramlakan explains, "We wish to confirm that Dr. Mandela was admitted to hospital earlier this week and underwent a few specialised investigations… These tests have been carried out at various facilities over the years and are a normal part of his medical regiment. Such tests are considered routine for a patient of his profile.
"At present Dr. Mandela is in high spirits and has been visited by his family and friends. Medically, at present, there is no need to panic. Dr. Mandela suffers from diseases common to people of his age as well as conditions that have developed over the years for which he receives chronic medication.
"He recently developed an acute respiratory infection, for which he received treatment and has responded very well. He is stable but will be monitored closely. Despite all of this, his amazing, positive attitude allows him to cope with the difficulties of old age with the greatest of graces."

Actor DAVID HASSELHOFF has credited his infamous drunken video tape with bringing him closer to his daughters.
The Baywatch legend hit headlines in 2007 when a film of him trying to eat a burger on the floor of his Las Vegas hotel room leaked on the internet.
In the clip, his then-teenage daughter Taylor-Ann, who shot the video, could be heard saying, "Tell me you are going to stop, tell me you are going to stop." Hasselhoff has previously admitted the tape was the wake up call he needed to face up to his alcohol addiction, and now he’s revealed he enjoys a better relationship with Taylor-Ann and her sister Hayley because of the incident.
The actor tells Britain’s The Sun, "The best part about it was what it did for my children. So many children called and said that their mum and dad are just like that. They asked, ‘What do we do?’ "It gave my children a great place to say, ‘Hey, you just love them because we love my dad more than anything and it brought us closer to each other.’ And in the end it’s a video. Who cares, you know? I am still here.
"In the end a lot of people who saw that video laughed at it, most of the people that saw that video see themselves."

Mother-to-be KATE HUDSON was so reclusive in the early days of her pregnancy, her friends feared she was depressed.
The Almost Famous star confirmed earlier this week (begs24Jan11) she’s expecting a baby with rocker boyfriend Matt Bellamy in the summer (11).
Hudson was determined to keep the news out of the headlines until she had passed her first trimester and remained at home in Los Angeles to prevent the paparazzi from learning her secret.
But the actress sparked concerns for her health among her friends, who thought she was ill.
Hudson tells Britain’s The Times, "My friends all thought I was depressed, because I wouldn’t leave the house. But I didn’t want anyone to know for a long time.
"I was just hoping that all of a sudden I could show up somewhere with a belly. But, of course, you’re somewhere in L.A., and somebody says something, and it ends up somewhere. And here we are." The blonde beauty also opens up about the pitfalls of carrying a baby, admitting: "I’m pregnant and I’m really sick! I babble a lot. I forget words. And how to put sentences together. I just give up!" The baby will be Hudson’s second child; she already has a son, Ryder, from her relationship with ex-husband Chris Robinson.

Acclaimed author TERRY MCMILLAN has taken aim at WILL SMITH and his wife JADA PINKETT SMITH, accusing them of "pimping" and "exploiting" their kids JADEN and WILLOW.
The How Stella Got Her Groove Back writer has gone public with her thoughts about the way the Smiths are bringing up their children in a post on Twitter.com - and she doesn’t approve of the success the youngsters are having so young.
She writes, "The Smith children already act like child stars. There’s an arrogance in their demeanour and behaviour. I find it incredibly sad. It feels like the Smith children are being pimped and exploited. Or, they’re already hungry for fame. What about 4th grade? "A lot of A-list movie stars shielded their children from the Hollywood-world until they were old enough to decide. Look at those who didn’t. Look at Lindsay. Phoenix. To name but a few. They miss out on childhood. It’s more important than fame.
"These kids don’t already know what they love. Total bulls**t. They’re not prodigies. They think Hollywood is real. Why don’t they do a remake of The Little Rascals and call it a day? Cult singer/songwriter JOHN GRANT is considering abandoning his native America to set up home in Moscow - so he can perfect his language skills.
The former The Czars frontman studied to become a Russian interpreter in Germany at the beginning of the 1990s but had to give up life in Europe and head home when his mother fell ill.
Now, he’d like to continue with his studies: "Mostly I wanna be there for the language. I’ve studied Russian for over 20 years and I have a certificate in interpreting and, in order for me to keep my skills at a high level, I think it would be great to live there for a while.
"I speak German; I lived in Germany for six years but I never got to spend any time in Russia, so I’d sorta like to do that."

British singer ALESHA DIXON is recovering after undergoing a painful foot operation last month (Dec10).
The Boy Does Nothing hitmaker has been nursing a mystery foot problem and she checked into hospital over the holidays for corrective surgery.
Dixon, who is now walking with the aid of a cane, is delighted the procedure was a success.
She tells Britain’s Daily Telegraph, "I’m trying my best to look elegant on my stick. Standing up for too long is a problem at the moment.
"I had bone correction about five weeks ago. I had an operation years ago and it needed to be corrected, but I’m all right now. I’m balanced again."

BOB GELDOF refused to take legal action over a British TV drama based on his Live Aid campaign even though his attorney warned him about the potentially "libellous" content.
The story of how Geldof and promoter Harvey Goldsmith put together the massive 1985 charity supergig in just six months was dramatised for a BBC TV movie, When Harvey Met Bob, which aired last month (Dec10).
Geldof’s daughter Peaches has previously voiced her disapproval over the show, but the rocker admits he was unfazed by it even though his lawyers were wary of letting the drama hit TV screens.
Geldof tells Britain’s The Sun, "I never watch anything about myself as I can’t stand hearing myself. I’m like, ‘Can you just f**k off now!’ My daughters watched it and thought it was awful but then they think anything their dad does is weird.
"I was sent the script of that drama by lawyers and there were lots of things wrong. My lawyer said, ‘This is libellous.’ And I said, ‘Oh for f**k’s sake. Get a grip. Who cares?’" The Boomtown Rats star also reveals some aspects of the drama were pure fiction, adding, "I certainly didn’t go down to Paul McCartney’s house and pick potatoes. I didn’t insist on playing for Charles and Diana (at Live Aid). Rubbish. I wanted them at Live Aid because their symbolism at that time was very high and she was a pop (music) fan. But apart from that I didn’t give a toss."

Rocker PETE WENTZ is turning talent judge to help pick an up-and-coming act to open for BON JOVI at a gig in London.
Wentz is teaming up with Starsailor rocker James Walsh and Steven Van Zandt from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band to critique wannabes hoping to win a support slot at Bon Jovi’s Hard Rock Calling concert in Hyde Park in June (11).
The London auditions will begin in March (11), according to the Evening Standard.

Rapper VANILLA ICE was hospitalised earlier this week (begs24Jan11) after he was knocked unconscious in an ice skating accident.
The hitmaker - real name Robert Van Winkle - is rehearsing for U.K. reality TV show Dancing on Ice, but suffered a horrific fall on Tuesday (25Jan11).
The star hit his head during a routine with his professional partner Katie Stainsby and passed out.
He regained consciousness after a few minutes and was taken to hospital by ambulance. Medics requested the star remain under observation overnight - but he refused, according to Britain’s The Sun.
He tells the publication, "Katie scraped me off the ice - I had no idea what happened at first. I was out for a few minutes. There was blood everywhere. I feel like I got hit by a train."

NINE INCH NAILS frontman TRENT REZNOR is keen to carry on writing soundtracks for Hollywood movies after winning critical acclaim for his work on THE SOCIAL NETWORK.
The rocker walked away with the Best Original Score prize at the Golden Globes earlier this month (Jan11), and is tipped to take the same title at next month’s (Feb11) Academy Awards.
Reznor has now signed on to compose the music for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo remake - and he is hoping for more movie work.
The star tells The Hollywood Reporter, "I didn’t realise it would resonate with people as much as it has. It’s been amazing and flattering to see what’s happened.
"I’m interested in the discipline and I’m interested in the challenge of working in the more traditional sense. I look at working with (a traditional orchestra) as something I haven’t done yet and I’ve always been intrigued by it. I would be up for that challenge."

Former DIVINYLS frontwoman CHRISSY AMPHLETT is celebrating after she was given the all-clear from breast cancer.
The I Touch Myself hitmaker revealed she was living with multiple sclerosis in 2007 and she was dealt another health blow when doctors diagnosed her with cancer last year (10).
The 51-year-old Australian began treatment in her adopted home of New York - and now doctors have confirmed she has beaten the disease.
In a series of posts on her Facebook.com page, she writes, "As of last Friday I am officially cancer free.
"Thankyou to those who have given their support and love, now lets celebrate Life!!!!! Today, I have no answers. I only know that I was given a chance to reflect on my own mortality; given a chance to choose life over the fear of death."

She tells Piers Morgan on his U.S. talk show, "We actually filmed it with our own cameras, like a home video and then we watched it - because you have no idea what that experience would be like. I said absolutely no cameras, I don’t want lighting guys, a mike on, this is my (moment).
"I think (because of) everything you see on TV… I was so terrified to give birth. Everything I’ve seen on movies, everything I’ve seen on TV of births has been so negative, (like) screaming, so that’s why I wanted to show that it (giving birth) can be (calm).
