DAMON: ‘SODERBERGH WILL RETIRE SOON’

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 1:28 pm

MATT DAMON is convinced his director pal STEVEN SODERBERGH is ready to retire from the movie business to forge a new career as a painter.
The Hollywood actor has worked with the famed moviemaker on a number of projects including the Ocean’s Eleven series, The Informant! and upcoming action thriller Contagion.
Damon has also signed up to star in Soderbergh’s movie about flamboyant pianist Liberace, and the actor believes the 47-year-old director will work on one more production before giving up filmmaking for good.
He tells the Los Angeles Times, "He’s retiring, he’s been talking about it for years and it’s getting closer. He wants to paint and he says he’s still young enough to have another career. He’s kind of exhausted with everything that interested him in terms of form. He’s not interested in telling stories. Cinema interested him in terms of form and that’s it. He says, ‘If I see another over-the-shoulder shot, I’m going to blow my brains out.’ "After this movie (Contagion) we’re doing Liberace next summer with Michael Douglas, and then he might do one more movie after that with George (Clooney), and then after that he’s retiring."

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 1:25 pm

ANNIE LENNOX’s plans for a festive TV special to celebrate her Christmas album had to be scrapped when the star’s ideas for a small screen spectacular blew the budget.
The former Eurythmics frontwoman, who turns 56 years old on Christmas Day (25Dec10), called on her childhood holiday musical memories to record new album A Christmas Cornucopia.
Lennox was keen to record a TV special to promote the record - but she was forced to give up on her plans when her set exceeded the budget for the show.
She tells Britain’s Daily Record, "We were going to have one, but unfortunately it got slightly capsized, which is a shame.
"It was going to cost an arm and a leg (a lot). (The costs were) huge so in practical terms it couldn’t be done. That’ll teach me to have big orchestra and choirs."

THE DOORS STARS CRITICISE MORRISON’S PARDON

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 1:25 pm

JIM MORRISON’s THE DOORS bandmates have criticised officials in Florida for granting the singer a pardon 41 years after he was accused of indecency at a concert in Miami - insisting an apology would be "more appropriate".
The late music icon was handed a six-month jail term and a $500 (£333) fine after he was convicted of drunkenly exposing himself on stage at a show in 1969. He was in the process of appealing the sentence when he died in Paris, France in 1971.
Florida Governor Charlie Crist recently launched a campaign to have the offence wiped from state records and Morrison was granted a pardon by members of a Clemency Board earlier this month (Dec10).
Morrison’s bandmates Robby Krieger, Ray Manzarek and John Densmore have now spoken out about the move, insisting the pardon is bittersweet because their late pal should never have been charged in the first place.
A statement from the trio reads, "We don’t feel Jim needs to be pardoned for anything… Whatever took place that night ended with The Doors sharing beers and laughter in the dressing room with the Miami police, who acted as security at the venue that evening. No arrests were made… Four days later, warrants were issued in Miami for the arrest of Morrison on trumped-up charges of indecency, public obscenity, and general rock-and-roll revelry. Every city The Doors were booked into cancelled their engagement.
"A circus of fire-and-brimstone ‘decency’ rallies, grand jury investigations and apocalyptic editorials followed… The charges against him were largely an opportunity for grandstanding by ambitious politicians - not to mention an affront to free speech and a massive waste of time and taxpayer dollars.
"Four decades after the fact, with Jim an icon for multiple generations - and those who railed against him now a laughingstock - Florida has seen fit to issue a pardon.
"If the State of Florida and the City of Miami want to make amends for the travesty of Jim Morrison’s arrest and prosecution 40 years after the fact, an apology would be more appropriate - and expunging the whole sorry matter from the record."

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 1:22 pm

TAYLOR MOMSEN will have to spend Christmas Day (25Dec10) without her family and friends in the U.S. - she’s "trapped" in Europe until Sunday (26Dec10).
The 17-year-old singer/actress finished touring with her band The Pretty Reckless last week (ends19Dec10), but was left stranded in Cologne, Germany after heavy snow closed airports across the continent.
She drove 132 miles (212 kilometres) along icy roads to Amsterdam on Monday (20Dec10) and enjoyed a day out in the Dutch city on Tuesday (21Dec10) - but when she headed to Schiphol Airport to board a flight home on Wednesday (22Dec10), the Gossip Girl star was hit by more delays.
And Momsen is now facing a Christmas with just her bandmates for company after her mission to jet back to the U.S. proved too difficult, as more heavy snow swept across Europe and crippled airports.

GERVAIS OPENS UP ABOUT ATHEISM

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 1:22 pm

British funnyman RICKY GERVAIS has written an essay for an American newspaper explaining his lack of religious beliefs.
The Office star has put together a piece for the Wall Street Journal, titled ‘A Holiday Message From Ricky Gervais: Why I’m an Atheist’, in which he explores the reasons for his doubts.
Gervais reveals he was a devoted Christian as a child until a conversation with his older brother changed his mind.
He writes, "I used to believe in God. The Christian one that is. I loved Jesus. He was my hero. More than pop stars. More than footballers… One day when I was about eight years old, I was drawing the crucifixion as part of my Bible studies homework… When my big brother Bob asked, ‘Why do you believe in God?’ Just a simple question. But my mum panicked. ‘Bob,’ she said in a tone that I knew meant, ‘Shut up.’ Why was that a bad thing to ask? If there was a God and my faith was strong it didn’t matter what people said.
"Oh… hang on. There is no God. He knows it, and she knows it deep down. It was as simple as that. I started thinking about it and asking more questions, and within an hour, I was an atheist." He later adds, "My point being, I’m saying God doesn’t exist. I’m not saying faith doesn’t exist. I know faith exists. I see it all the time. But believing in something doesn’t make it true. Hoping that something is true doesn’t make it true. The existence of God is not subjective. He either exists or he doesn’t. It’s not a matter of opinion. You can have your own opinions. But you can’t have your own facts."

SCHWIMMER LOSES TRUST RATING BATTLE

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 1:16 pm

DAVID SCHWIMMER has lost a battle to lower the restrictive age rating for his controversial new film TRUST.
The former Friends star has stepped behind the camera to direct the harrowing movie about a teenager lured to a motel for sex by an online predator. The actor/director was incensed when movie regulators in America slapped the film with an R-rating, meaning viewers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Schwimmer appealed the decision and spoke out about the "double standard" of the rating system, insisting the "old" rules need updating.
But officials at the Motion Picture Association ratings board have now rejected the star’s appeal and maintained Trust’s R-rating, citing the movie’s "disturbing material involving the rape of a teen, language, sexual content and some violence" for the decision, according to EW.com.

SCORSESE SUPPORTS JAILED IRANIAN DIRECTORS

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 1:16 pm

MARTIN SCORSESE is urging Hollywood to "campaign aggressively" to free two Iranian directors who were sentenced to six years in jail this week (beg20Dec10), insisting fellow filmmakers need to "stand up" for the imprisoned pair.
The Oscar-winner was among a number of stars, including Robert De Niro and Steven Spielberg, who signed a petition to free Jafar Panahi after he was arrested in March (10). Panahi is a vocal supporter of the country’s opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi and was this week (20Dec10) convicted of campaigning against the country’s government.
Director Mohammad Rasulov was also jailed for six years, and Scorsese is leading the charge to publicise their plight.
He says in a statement, "I was shocked and disheartened by the news of Jafar Panahi and Mohammed Rasoulof’s conviction and sentencing. It’s depressing to imagine a society with so little faith in its own citizens that it feels compelled to lock up anyone with a contrary opinion. As filmmakers, we all need to stand up for Panahi and Rasoulof. We should applaud their courage and campaign aggressively for their immediate release."

THURMAN STALKER OFFERED BAIL

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:19 am

A man awaiting trial for allegedly breaking a restraining order by attempting to contact UMA THURMAN has been given the chance to post bail - if he can raise $250,000 (£166,000).
Jack Jordon, who was convicted of stalking the Kill Bill actress in 2008, is accused of breaching a protective order by calling Thurman’s cell and New York office phone, prompting her to lodge a complaint with police.
He was arrested during a raid at his mother’s Maryland home in November (10) and was placed under doctors’ supervision. Jordon was subsequently charged with two counts of criminal contempt and appeared in court last week (16Dec10) when he entered a not guilty plea.
He was ordered to remain in custody at New York’s Rikers Island prison as he awaits trial.
However, on Wednesday (22Dec10) a judge gave him a chance to get out of jail - but only if he can post the $250,000 cash bail or $500,000 (£333,000) bond set during the hearing.
The initial 2008 restraining order was put in place after Jordon was found guilty of fourth-degree stalking and one count of second-degree aggravated harassment after sending the blonde beauty creepy letters and threatening to kill himself outside her New York home in 2005.
He was ordered to star away from Thurman for five years.
