OLD SKULL’S YOUNG LEADER DEAD AT 30

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 11:16 pm

Pre-teen punk phenomenon J.P. TOULON was saluted by fans and friends at his group OLD SKULL’s former headquarters in New York on Sunday (21Nov10) following his mysterious 13 November (10) death.
Toulon was just nine when he formed the band that would become Old Skull with his brother Jamie in 1989.
The brothers’ debut album, Get Outta School, was an immediate underground success and the young act became a college breakout act.
Old Skull hit the road with Restless Records labelmates Flaming Lips and Sonic Youth and followed up their debut with another cult hit, C.I.A Drug Fest, in 1992.
The band split up in 1993 and the Toulon brothers faced a double tragedy when their divorced parents died while they were still teenagers.
The group reformed in 2005 to support the Exploited at CBGB’s in New York.
Toulon served jail time in his native Madison, Wisconsin earlier this year (10) before entering a drug rehab facility. Reports suggest J.P. was winning his battle with addiction at the time of his death, the cause of which is still unknown.

ENO BRANDS WALL STREET MOVIE BOSSES ‘CRETINOUS’

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 11:16 pm

BRIAN ENO has taken aim at the producers of WALL STREET: MONEY NEVER SLEEPS, accusing them of "cretinous" editing of his music in the movie.
The revered former Roxy Music star is frustrated that modern technology makes it too easy for record producers to cut sections of songs and transform the arrangement.
And he is adamant the practice is equally damaging to films - singling out Oliver Stone’s Wall Street sequel for criticism after his own songs were "chopped about" on the soundtrack.
He tells Britain’s Seven magazine, "I went to a movie the other evening and it made me think a lot about the danger of editing. Editing is now the easiest thing on earth to do… There used to be a sort of barrier… whereas now editing is like a disease, it drives me completely mad.
"I don’t know whether I should really say which film it was… I will, actually. Why not bite the hand that fed me? It was Wall Street 2, which in fact has a fair bit of my music in it - chopped about in the most cretinous manner, in my opinion.
"But it’s not only my music that’s chopped about, it’s the whole film. You just know there’s some fat t**t in the production suite saying, ‘It’s a little slow here, Ollie’."

YORKE ASKS FANS FOR HELP TO CREATE SPACE ART

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 11:15 pm

RADIOHEAD frontman THOM YORKE is calling on fans and friends to help him create a huge human art image of 11th century Viking leader Canute that is visible from space.
Yorke is developing the ambitious project with bosses at environmental charity 350 EARTH to raise awareness about the globe’s climate-change issues.
His ’statue’ will be one of 16 created around the globe and photographed by satellites on the eve of a United Nations meeting in Cancun, Mexico, according to Spinner.com.
In a post on Radiohead’s website, Yorke writes, "The plan is to make images visible from the skies to remind those in Cancun that we are running out of time. We can’t keep putting this off." Yorke designed the image with longtime collaborator Stanley Donwood, who has created all of Radiohead’s album art.
He is taking RSVPs for the event through the 350 EARTH website. The building work will start at 11am on 27 November (10) at an undisclosed location near Brighton, England.
Yorke needs 1,999 people to help him create the space art.

THORNTON HAS A FRESH OUTLOOK ON THE MEDIA

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 11:13 pm

BILLY BOB THORNTON has learned to keep his mouth shut about certain things when he’s chatting to the media - but insists he’ll never be rude to the people who publicise his films.
The actor has been much maligned for his quirks and comments in the past and now, after a Hollywood hiatus, he’s back with a vengeance in new action blockbuster Faster. But this time, he’s choosing his words carefully.
He tells WENN, "We’re living in a time in the entertainment business when if you have the opportunity to do something real, it is nice to be able to talk about it. Most movies are about vampires in 3D or fantasy movies and war eagles, so when you are an actual actor and you want to do real movies and you want to stay grounded over the years we do get to know a lot of the press.
"It’s nice to do real work and come in and talk to you guys about it and I haven’t always been tight-lipped, so as a result I would get in a sticky situation every now and then. But right now we rely on you guys when we actually do a good movie or a real movie.
"I suppose that there are guys who will not do a movie for three years and talk to anybody and pass you by and won’t sign your kids’ things, and then a guy like me, who might say a few too many things, but I’m trying and I will sign your kids’ things and I will tell you everything about what I thought about that chick or whatever.
"For the most part you guys have been really good to me. When people say, ‘I don’t like the press and I don’t like the fans,’ I say, ‘The fans are the people who allow my kids to go to school and keep us going, and I can pay for the house.’ You guys are the people to get it out there, so the fans know what the hell is going on, so we owe you guys and in return if we’re gonna be forthcoming and honest with you, you owe us to not twist it."

PINTO RELIVED WRITER’S TORTURE SCENE AS SHE WATCHED

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 11:12 pm

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE star FREIDA PINTO felt "uncomfortable" filming a harrowing scene for her new movie MIRAL - because the woman she portrays was watching the shoot from the shadows.
Rula Jebreal, the real-life orphaned Palestinian girl she plays in the film, was a consultant on set - and she had to relive her tortured youth in Jerusalem in the wake of the first Arab-Israeli war.
Based on her own semi-autobiographical novel, the film features graphic torture scenes which Jebreal experienced.
Pinto tells Britain’s Daily Telegraph Magazine, "Sometimes it would be a bit daunting to have her around, especially when I filmed the torture scene… I was a bit uncomfortable having Rula there then.
"I just thought, ‘They are replaying everything that happened to her, I’m doing it in front of her,’ and that didn’t feel right. It felt inhuman, almost, making someone watch something so traumatic that they’ve been through.
"But, at the same time, I feel having her there after the scene really helped her as well as me. I got an insight into her, where I just sensed her bravery in going through what she went through. I asked if she really had scars on her back and she did show them to me. It is not something she shows to everybody."

PRINCE WILLIAM HAILED A HERO AFTER RESCUE MISSION

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 8:28 pm

British royal PRINCE WILLIAM has been hailed a real-life hero after helping to rescue a man stranded on a mountain in Wales, two days after announcing his engagement to KATE MIDDLETON.
The 28-year-old heir returned to work as a helicopter rescue pilot for the Royal Air Force immediately after revealing his plans to wed on Tuesday (16Nov10) - and one of his team’s first call outs on Thursday (18Nov10) saw them come to the aid of Greg Watkins, who had suffered a suspected heart attack on Mount Snowdon, the highest peak in Wales.
The Prince’s four-man crew managed to lift Watkins to safety in wet and windy conditions and he has expressed his gratitude to the young royal and his colleagues.
Watkins tells Britain’s Sunday Mirror newspaper, "If it wasn’t for him and the rest of his crew, I’d be dead.
"He’d probably say he was just doing his job but, to me, he and his crew are heroes. The weather was appalling up on that mountain. How he managed to get the helicopter so close defies belief.
"The fog was so thick at times, you couldn’t see your hand in front of your face. The rain was lashing down and it was howling a gale." And Watkins admits it took him a while to realise it had been the Prince at the controls of the chopper: "I didn’t know Prince William was flying the helicopter until we landed at the hospital. Even then, I felt too unwell for it to register much.
"I’d only been watching him announce the engagement on television with Kate a few hours earlier - it was his first mission since going back to work.
"I feel lucky to be alive but even luckier to have been rescued by the future king."

USHER CAUGHT UP IN PLAGIARISM SUIT

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 8:27 pm

R&B superstar USHER is at the centre of a plagiarism lawsuit amid allegations his song CAUGHT UP was stolen from material written by an aspiring singer.
Wadena Pyatt claims she landed a record contract with Alicia Keys’ MBK Entertainment label in 2003 and penned the track for inclusion on her debut album.
But according to the legal documents filed in New York, Pyatt was left dumbfounded when she discovered Usher had used it for his hit album Confessions and she was not listed as one of the songwriters.
Instead, the disc states Caught Up was the work of Ryan Toby, Andre Harris, Vidal Davis and Jason Boyd. The song was released as a single in 2004.
Pyatt is demanding damages for profits received from sales of the tune, reports AllHipHop.com.

FILAN’S FORMER FRIEND STILL ‘DESPISES’ WESTLIFE

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 8:24 pm

Irish pop star SHANE FILAN is convinced his former best friend "despises" WESTLIFE after he was kicked out of the group in its early days.
Filan and his pal Derrick Lacey were founding members of the pop group Six As One, which was later moulded into Westlife under the direction of music manager Louis Walsh.
But Walsh only agreed to work with the singers if Lacey was booted from the group - and Filan was heartbroken when he was forced to break the bad news to his pal.
He tells Britain’s Daily Mail Weekend magazine, "It was f**king horrendous. It was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever had to tell somebody. It was like I was saying, ‘We can’t be friends any more because I’m going off to do this band with Louis Walsh and you’re not invited.
"I saw him the other day and he waved to me. We’ve had a couple of conversations, but I’m sure that he despises Westlife. He’s still a nice guy but I don’t know if he’ll ever get over it… It’s like winning the lottery and then getting the ticket taken off you." Kian Egan, whose best pal Graham Keighron was also dropped, adds: "Of course he’s upset. They’re all upset. You’re driving around in Bentleys and Ferraris, living in a castle at the top of the hill and he’s working in a pub."

OK GO TAKE OVER LOS ANGELES FOR VIDEO SHOOT

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 8:24 pm

Experimental rockers OK GO stopped traffic in Los Angeles last week (ends19Nov10) with the help of hundreds of fans - to create a "city-sized drawing" of the band name for its next music video.
Cameras followed swarms of fans on Wednesday (17Nov10) for an all-day shoot stretching eight miles (12.87 kilometres) over Los Angeles city streets, after the band announced plans for a music "parade" on its website.
Many revellers were equipped with noisemakers, megaphones and neon instruments as they followed a street path that spelled out ‘OK Go’.
On their website, the stars described their aim to create a "city-sized drawing" of the band name by using global positioning system (GPS) technology paired with a special iPhone application to mark the trek.
On location, frontman Damian Kulash told MTV News his bandmates recently realised "music doesn’t need to be about the product you make all the time", insisting instead "It can just be about getting together and making sound." OK Go has become well-known for its outrageous, high-concept music videos since its breakout clip in 2006 for the band’s hit single Here It Goes Again, which featured the rockers performing an intricately choreographed dance on treadmills.
The parade video is expected to be finished by January (11).

WAVVES FRONTMAN ARRESTED FOR DRUG POSSESSION

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 8:24 pm

WAVVES frontman NATHAN WILLIAMS has been released on bail following an arrest in Germany for drug possession.
The singer was taken into custody on Thursday (18Nov10) after police found a bag of marijuana in Williams’ car during a roadside check, reports New York Magazine.
He was released on bail after handing over 200 Euros ($270/£180), but Williams has laughed off the incident, revealing he celebrated his freedom by "getting high again".
In a statement, he says: "I had six bags in the car and they only found one - the f**king dogs never work… They put me in a cell which was a little nerve-wracking. More so because I was an American in a German jail and not because I have long gay hair.
"I gave em (sic) 200 euros and walked out … not a terrible deal. And now I’m getting high again."

JAY-Z RULES OUT MOVE INTO POLITICS

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 8:22 pm

Rap mogul JAY-Z has ruled out adding politician to his resume - insisting most of those in public office are self-serving "liars".
The 99 Problems hitmaker has several business interests and is always keen to expand his empire, but he’s adamant he has no desire to emulate his pal, U.S. President Barack Obama, by launching a political career.
He tells Britain’s Guardian magazine, "I’m not interested in politics. I have zero interest. I have interest in hope and people. Politics - I still think it’s a bunch of liars and a bunch of self-interest. It’s not about people, it’s about themselves and their rise to power.
"They are voting on things based on whether they will have the support of the people when they vote next time. They don’t have the b**ls to say, ‘I believe in this, I don’t care what happens.’ And until that happens, nothing is going to get fixed; you’re still going to have 14 year olds in cities with AK-47s."

DETOX WILL BE DRE’S LAST ALBUM

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 8:22 pm

Hip-hop icon DR. DRE will retire as a rapper after the long-awaited release of DETOX next year (11).
The former N.W.A. star has been working on his third solo project for over a decade and it will reportedly hit music retailers in February (11) after a string of delays.
Dre admits he struggled to complete the disc because at 45, he fears he’s losing touch with his younger fans.
He tells the upcoming issue of XXL Magazine, "The only part that has been pushing me back is just the fact that I’m getting older…
"I can incorporate other artists, new artists with this record, to say some of the things I won’t say. It’s been a little tussle in that area also, just because of age and being able to identify with the younger audience." And Dre reveals Detox will be his last album - he will hang up the microphone for good to concentrate on his work as a superproducer, nurturing the next generation of rappers.
He says, "As far as me going into the mic booth, that s**t is over. I’m always going to talent scout and try to find new artists to work with. But, yeah, that’s it."

FORMER FUGITIVE MODEL ‘BAMBI’ BEMBENEK DIES

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 8:22 pm

The headline-grabbing Playboy model portrayed by TATUM O’NEAL in TV movie WOMAN ON TRIAL: THE LAWRENCIA BEMBENEK STORY has died at the age of 52.
Laurie Bembenek passed away on Saturday (20Nov10) due to complications from hepatitis C and kidney failure, according to the New York Post.
She quit modeling and became a police officer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin but hit headlines again when she was convicted of murdering her then-husband, Milwaukee Police Department detective Elfred ‘Fred’ Schultz’s ex-wife, Christine Schultz, in 1981.
Bembenek escaped prison in 1990 with the help of an incarcerated boyfriend and was on the run for three months until she was captured in Canada. She was nicknamed ‘Bambi’ by the media during the chase.
Her sensational story was documented in the 1993 TV movie, with O’Neal in the starring role. Actress Lindsay Frost also played her in 1992 film Calendar Girl, Cop, Killer? The Bambi Bembenek Story.
Bembenek always maintained she had been framed by the Milwaukee Police Department, allegedly so that her ex would no longer have to pay alimony.
Following her prison release, she wrote a book about the ordeal, entitled Woman on Trial.
In 2002, the story took a bizarre turn when TV psychologist Dr. Phil McGraw agreed to conduct a DNA test on evidence from the case.
She was holed up in an apartment to prevent her from talking to other press, but Bembenek suffered a panic attack while in hiding and tried to escape by climbing out of a window. She fell and injured her foot so badly it had to be amputated.
Bembenek is survived by two sisters, Melanie and Colette.
