RAMONE’S SIGN MOVED
A sign in New York City commemorating late punk legend JOEY RAMONE has be en moved following a series of thefts.
The corner of Bowery and East 2nd Street in Manhattan was renamed Joey Ramone Place in 2003 as a lasting tribute to the singer, who lived nearby and played at the local CBGB music club during his early years with the Ramones.
City officials have been forced to replace the sign on numerous occasio ns because determined fans keep stealing it, and following the latest the ft they have now moved it to 20 feet (six metres) above street level in a bid to deter the vandals.
But the star’s bandmate Marky Ramone fears fans will have trouble spott ing the sign now it is so far off the ground.
He tells the New York Post, "He (Joey) would have appreciated the disti nction, but maybe they should find a better way to attach it. Now you hav e to be an NBA (basketball) player to see it.
"Every time I turn down 2nd Street, I look up and say, ‘Hey Joey, you b elong up there.’ It’s a really nice tribute to a frontman who started the genre we call punk rock." Joey Ramone died in 2001.
