WYCLEF ADMITS HAITI PRESIDENCY DEFEAT
WYCLEF JEAN has officially withdrawn his candidacy for the Haitian presid ency.
Lawmakers ruled last month (Aug10) that the hip-hop star would not be e ligible for the upcoming November (10) election in his native country bec ause he didn’t meet residency requirements.
The Gone Till November hitmaker was left fuming over the decision, beli eving himself to be fully eligible to be on the ballot - and vowed to app eal the decision through Haiti’s courts.
But on Tuesday (21Sep10) Wyclef announced he was ending his presidency bid.
In a statement to CBS News, he says, "After weeks of quiet but painstak ing reflection with my wife and daughter, I have chosen to end my bid for the presidency of Haiti.
"This was not an easy conclusion to reach; but it is one that was thoug htfully made, taking into account many, many competing factors and weighi ng the course that will best advance the healing of the country and help it find the quickest path to recovery." Despite his failed bid to preside over the country - which is still rec overing from January’s (10) devastating earthquake - Jean is still please d he put himself in the running.
He adds, "Though my run for the presidency was cut short, in this way, I feel it was not in vain. It’s something we can use to improve condition s for my Haitian brothers and sisters."
