THE WHO star ROGER DALTREY is urging the British public to put aside rese rvations about the war in Afghanistan and throw their full support behind the troops fighting there.
The rocker is due to play a charity concert in the U.K. next month (Sep 10) to benefit soldiers injured in the conflict, as well as the families of those killed in battle.
And Daltrey is adamant Britons need to forget the political aspect of t he war and focus on helping the brave men and women who fight for their c ountry.
He tells Britain’s The Sun, "It is astonishing to me that people’s atti tude to our permanently injured troops can be equally divided. ‘They know what they’re signing up for when they join,’ has been a phrase I’ve hear d during the last few months while trying to raise support for… the con cert.
"While I appreciate that a lot of these people are fiercely opposed to the war, to carry opposition of it into opposition to the support of our injured troops is an anathema (sic) to me… We as a society have a respo nsibility to the young men and women who have paid a very high price for the politics of this country. It’s far too easy to say the war was not in my name, because we have to accept that rightly or wrongly it was. The d ecisions of the British government are our responsibility. We voted them in…
"I’m sure we can show that we’ve learned from the mistakes of the past and give our wounded heroes the support they deserve." The concert in south west London on 12 September (10) will raise funds for the Help For Heroes charity, while 150 injured soldiers will be given free tickets.

MELANIE BROWN is remaining tight-lipped amid claims her marriage to STEPH EN BELAFONTE is over.
Editors at Britain’s Sunday Mirror newspaper ran a report on Sunday (29 Aug10) attributing quotes of a split to Belafonte, who wed the former Spi ce Girl in 2007.
The movie producer is alleged to have said, "Dude, it’s over. Mel’s com ing back to the U.K. soon - but I won’t be coming with her. There’s been problems lately. I don’t know what’s happening." The publication goes on to report that Belafonte is consulting lawyers about a divorce.
But Brown has so far refused to comment on the claims officially - and had remained silent on her Twitter.com page about the allegations as WENN went to press, instead posting snaps of herself on the way to rehearsals on Sunday morning.

Pop star JUSTIN BIEBER has been forced to postpone a planned concert in N ew York on Sunday night (29Aug10) due to a mystery illness.
The Baby hitmaker was scheduled to perform at the New York State Fair i n Syracuse, but the show has been rescheduled to Wednesday (01Sep10) as t he teen star recovers from an unknown ailment.
A statement on the Fair’s website reads: "Due to an illness and under d octor’s orders, Justin Bieber has been forced to re-schedule his Sunday, Aug. 29 concert at the New York State Fair to Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 7 pm .." Bieber last performed on Saturday night (28Aug10) in Newark, New Jersey , and later alluded to the illness on his Twitter.com page, writing, "Bee n super sick lately but u guys are carrying me. thank u for the love." GUNS N’ ROSES frontman AXL ROSE has demanded an apology from the organise r of Britain’s Reading festival following a bust-up over the band’s set o n Friday (27Aug10).
The rockers were left fuming after bosses pulled the plug early during their headlining slot at the annual event, forcing them to perform acoust ically and overrun their finish time.
Guitarist DJ Ashba went public with claims that the festival’s director , Melvin Benn, has long held a "grudge" against the band and branded him "cocky" and "money-grubbing" following the incident.
And now Rose has taken to his blog on Twitter.com to air his own grieva nces over the troubled set - and has urged Benn to apologise to festivalg oers over Friday’s "nonsense".
In a post on the microblogging website, he writes, "In regard to Readin g we feel at the very least the fans deserve an apology from those respon sible for the nonsense. We’d also like to thank the fans for being so gre at, singing along n’ not tearing the place apart!!" The band is scheduled to play at the twinned Leeds festival on Sunday n ight (29Aug10).

Movie sequel TOY STORY 3 has smashed yet another box office record - the film has become the first ever animated movie to make $1 billion.
The third installment in the hit franchise overtook Shrek 2 to become t he world’s most successful cartoon film this month (Aug10), and now the D isney-Pixar adventure has reached another milestone by passing the billio n dollar mark at the worldwide box office.
The film, which features the voice of Tom Hanks, is the second Disney p icture to reach the total this year (10), following Alice in Wonderland’s massive takings.

GEORGE CLOONEY felt nervous filming sex scenes for his new movie THE AMER ICAN because he isn’t "that experienced" when it comes to stripping off o nscreen, according to his co-star VIOLANTE PLACIDO.
The actress plays Clooney’s love interest in the film, which tells the story of an assassin who takes a break from hitman duties to spend time i n a quiet Italian village.
The pair plays lovers in the picture, and Placido admits her co-star fe lt apprehensive about shooting the saucy bedroom scenes.
She tells People.com, "He confessed… that he didn’t do lots of sex sc enes. I felt like this was in a way something new to him, he wasn’t that experienced.
"We had to find a way to make it natural and let your body speak someho w. We were very open to one another to try and make it work. We just said ‘Let’s trust each other’ and we did. I felt like we had to let ourselves go. It had to look real."

Tennis ace SERENA WILLIAMS is stepping up her charitable efforts in Kenya - she is planning to build a third school for underprivileged children.
The 28 year old tennis champion became involved in a school-building mi ssion in Matooni, a three-hour drive from the capital of Nairobi, after s he rose to fame - and now she calls the project "the best thing" she’s ev er done.
She has already built two schools in the area - where civilians don’t h ave access to running water - and Williams has vowed to build another lea rning establishment by next year (11).
She tells America’s Hamptons magazine, "It was the best thing I’ve ever done. I always said winning all those Grand Slams was a dream, but when I opened my school in Kenya, that was the best feeling in the world becau se I was helping people who had almost nothing."

A spokesperson for DAME JULIE ANDREWS has dismissed reports the veteran a ctress demanded a staggering fee to take part in a BBC tribute show on he r 75th birthday.
The Sound of Music star will hit the milestone in October (10) and was due to celebrate her career by appearing on a U.K. TV special alongside s everal of her former colleagues.
Producers were said to have expected Andrews to participate for free an d negotiations allegedly halted after she asked to be paid.
But her publicist has shrugged off the rumours, insisting Andrews did n ot ask for a pay cheque.
He tells Britain’s Sunday Telegraph, "We have heard rumblings of the de sire to do a tribute. There have been no direct conversations about it. A s such, no fee was ever requested. SANDRA BULLOCK has marked the fifth anniversary of the Hurricane Katrina disaster by helping to open a free medical and dental clinic at a local h igh school in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The Oscar winner joined politicians, educators and school supporters fo r the ribbon-cutting ceremony at Warren Easton Charter High School on Sun day (29Aug10).
The free, full-service medical and dental clinic is scheduled to open t his autumn (10).
Her appearance coincided with the fifth anniversary of the Hurricane Ka trina disaster, which devastated the coastal regions of Louisiana and Mis sissippi in 2005.
Bullock previously donated money to help restore Easton, the city’s old est public high school, which was flooded with nine feet (2.7 metres) of water when the storm hit land.

British singer MYLEENE KLASS is urging youngsters to abandon their pop st ar dreams and consider careers in medicine - because she’s convinced help ing others is "more worthwhile than anything else".
The former Hear’Say star recently volunteered to work in a maternity wa rd in a London hospital and was put to work alongside midwives and doctor s, comforting pregnant women and helping out in the birthing suites.
And she insists the experience made her realise there are more satisfyi ng jobs than performing in the spotlight.
In a column in Britain’s Mail on Sunday, Klass writes, "It’s an exhaust ing job: I sat with one mum-to-be in labour for 17 hours. I held her hand the whole time. She was having a similar labour to my own and I was able to reassure her.
"I know this might sound strange coming from me, but when I think of al l the kids out there who want to be TV presenters or pop stars, I want th em to realise that there’s another fantastic career here in the hospital - one that makes a real difference to people’s lives and is more worthwhi le than almost anything else.
"And there’s such a shortage of midwives that hospitals are crying out for more staff. I think if I ever had to have a career change, I=E2=80=99 d want to become a midwife. I can=E2=80=99t think of anything that would give such satisfaction. I can=E2=80=99t wait to go back."

MICHAEL JACKSON’s close friend LIONEL RICHIE is convinced the superstar’s kids "have a better chance" of living a "normal life" after their father ’s tragic death.
The Thriller hitmaker’s three kids - Prince, 13, Paris, 12, and eight-y ear-old Blanket - were placed in the custody of their grandmother Katheri ne after the King of Pop passed away last year (09).
All three were tutored at home under the instruction of the singer, who was determined to keep his children out of the public eye, but Katherine decided they would be better off at public school.
Prince and Paris spent their first day at school in California on Wedne sday (25Aug10), and Richie is convinced the youngsters will thrive in the ir new environment.

A toilet which once belonged to late BEATLES legend JOHN LENNON has sold for over $14,000 (=C2=A39,300) at an auction on Saturday (28Aug10).
The blue and white porcelain bowl was once installed at Tittenhurst Par k, Lennon’s luxury mansion in Berkshire, England, where he lived until mo ving to New York with Yoko Ono in 1971.
Organisers at the auction in Liverpool, England were stunned by the hig h price of $14,740 (=C2=A39,820) paid by the unnamed lucky winner - becau se the item was only expected to fetch up to $1,500 (=C2=A31,000).
Anne-Marie Trace, who works at the Beatles Shop which organised the sal e, tells Reuters, "I think it’s the most unusual item we’ve ever had in o ur auction." Other lots that went under the hammer included a mono copy of Lennon an d Ono’s Two Virgins album and a black-and-white photo of Sir Paul McCartn ey outside his home in Liverpool when he was aged 21.

Dozy DIZZEE RASCAL was caught napping at the Reading Festival on Saturday (28Aug10) - he was woken up by organisers just minutes before he was due onstage.

A tribute concert featuring a performance of the SMALL FACES’ classic alb um OGDENS’ NUT GONE FLAKE has been scrapped after the veteran rockers ref used to sanction the show.
British singers including Ultravox frontman Midge Ure, David Essex, and Madness star Suggs were due to sing tracks from the 1968 concept album a s part of The Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake Show at the IndigO2 venue in London in October (10).
But the concert has now been scrapped after the musicians claimed the g ig had been organised without their permission.
In a post on his official website, keyboardist Ian McLagan writes, "The show has been cancelled by Ian McLagan, (drummer) Kenney Jones, the Trus t for (original singer) Steve Marriott, the trust for (original bassist) Ronnie Lane, and the Small Faces Charitable Trust. (Producers) John Helli er and Mark Cunningham organised and promoted this show without consultin g us." Organiser Hellier says, "They were consulted with plans for the show bu t permission was not asked as permission does not need to be asked. Those songs are played in pubs throughout the country every night of the week and as long as a PRS (Performing Right Society) fee is paid all is above board."

A representative for NICKI MINAJ has been forced to deny rumours the rapp er has secretly wed DRAKE after the pair joked about their "marriage" on Twitter.com.
