JEAN’S MUM WARNED HIM TO BEEF UP SECURITY
WYCLEF JEAN’s worried mum urged the hip-hop star to seek out U.S. Preside nt BARACK OBAMA’s security team when he told her he was hoping to become Haiti’s next leader.
The former Fugees star learned on Friday (20Aug10) he had been ruled ou t of the political race in his homeland because he’s ineligible to be a p residential candidate - just days after death threats about his plans to run forced him into hiding.
And he admits his mother knew he’d become a target when he first told h er of his political plans.
He tells Rolling Stone magazine, "She said, ‘If this is the move you wa nt to make, then be brave about it, and understand it’s going to be heavy .. So, if you’re going to give your country five years, give them the best five years and make sure that you have a security team like Barack Obama ..’" But Jean knew in advance his decision to add his name to the list of pr esidential candidates would be a controversial one - he has survived past assassination attempts for speaking out about his homeland.
He adds, "If you look it up on the Internet, you’ll see my assassinatio n was plotted a few times… But what should I do, say, ‘There’s a chance I’m going to get killed, so I’ll just sit back and watch this country to pple to the ground in the next few years?’ That’s not in my DNA." (KL/RS/
