EMINEM’S RECOVERY STILL TOP OF U.K. CHARTS

Rapper EMINEM has clung on to number one in the U.K. music charts, markin g the fourth week his album RECOVERY has hit the top spot.
The hip-hop star came first in the album charts, continuing his reign t hat was disturbed just once by Kylie Minogue earlier this month (Jul10).
Second place went to U.K. rapper Professor Green’s debut Alive Till I’m Dead, while British singer Plan B’s The Defamation of Strickland Banks c laimed third.
Minogue’s Aphrodite dropped two spots to fourth, while pop star Eliza D oolittle’s self-titled debut rounded out the top five.
Meanwhile in the singles chart, Australian dance duo Yolanda Be Cool sc ored their first number one with We No Speak Americano, which overtook la st week’s top single Airplanes, by rapper B.O.B. and Hayley Williams, whi ch dropped to three.
Eminem’s collaboration with Rihanna, Love The Way You Lie, was in secon d place and Katy Perry’s California Gurls was at four. Eliza Doolittle’s Pack Up came fifth.

HUCKNALL DEFENSIVE AFTER FACES BACKLASH

British singer MICK HUCKNALL has defended himself after fans criticised h is inclusion in THE FACES, insisting he’s replacing ROD STEWART because t he MAGGIE MAY star can no longer hit the high notes.
The former Simply Red star has been confirmed as the new frontman of th e reunited supergroup and will join Ronnie Wood, Kenney Jones and Ian McL agan for a tour next year (11).
The news was met with an outcry from many of the group’s loyal follower s - but Hucknall is convinced he’ll be able to win over audiences because his voice sounds like Stewart’s at the height of the band’s success in t he 1970s.
He says, "It’s a shame that Rod can’t do it but then Rod isn’t the Rod of 1973. Those songs, the keys are so high and it’s pretty intense stayin g at that kind of pitch for the whole night."

RARE PRESLEY POSSESSIONS ON SALE

ELVIS PRESLEY’s grand piano, his gold-rimmed sunglasses, and his open-top sports car will be the leading lots at an auction of The King’s possessi ons next month (Aug10).
The rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia sale also features a revolver belonging t o the Hound Dog hitmaker, along with his address book and his iconic opal and diamond ring.
The auction will be held in Memphis, Tennessee, and is expected to rais e $1.5 million (=C2=A31 million) for the white piano alone. Presley’s Tri umph TR-6 Convertible car is expected to sell for $67,500 (=C2=A345,000), while his sunglasses will fetch $18,000 (=C2=A312,000).
A spokesman for the sale says of the piano, "For the serious Elvis Pres ley fan or collector, it’s hard to imagine a more important musical relic .."

PRIMA HONOURED WITH POSTHUMOUS HOLLYWOOD STAR

Late jazz star LOUIS PRIMA was the toast of Hollywood on Sunday (25Jul10) as he received a posthumous star on the Walk of Fame and swing-dancing f ans came out to jive on the streets in his memory.
The King of Swing, who died in August 1978, was honoured by his son Lou is Jr. and daughter Lena at a ceremony on Vine Street in Los Angeles, whe re his sidewalk tribute was unveiled.
Big band The Witnesses performed Prima’s music while groups of swing-da ncers showed off their moves at the concert, reports the Associated Press ..
Funnyman Bill Cosby payed his respects to the star, telling the crowd, "Louis Prima was a great entertainer and presented a great show. But more than anything else, he brought happiness to his audiences." Prima, who passed away after surgery to remove a brain tumour, would ha ve turned 100 years old this year (10).

M.I.A. ENDS SHOW EARLY OVER ‘ELECTROCUTION’ SCARE

M.I.A.’s headline slot at an open-air concert in New York on Saturday (24 Jul10) had to be cut short amid fears the rapper would be electrocuted du ring a severe thunderstorm.
Driving rain lashed the stage at the Hard NYC Party on Governors Island , and the Paper Planes hitmaker was forced to abandon her performance as forks of lightning lit up the sky.
But she refused to leave the stage after organisers cut off her sound - joining several of her bandmates to rap without any backing track for se veral minutes.
Before ending her set, M.I.A. told fans the lightning could be a danger to the metal-framed stage, adding: "F**k that s**t." She later blasted conditions at the event and even claimed the stage wa s disintegrating during her headline slot.
In a post on her Twitter.com page, M.I.A. writes, "Money doesn’t buy u s**t! I thought more money means better sound guys in America… I was wr ong, the higher u go, they turn u lower (sic)!… That still didn’t stop us! It’s bigger then (sic) that!… f**k technology! Even the stage broke + parts of it fell off in the storm."

SIXTH SENSE TOPS MOVIE TWISTS POLL

The stunning twist at the end of creepy classic THE SIXTH SENSE has been voted the most shocking movie moment of all time.
The jaw-dropping scene in which Bruce Willis’ character learns the trut h about his existence has topped a survey of the greatest ever film twist s.
It beat a scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 horror Psycho - when Norma n Bates reveals the real identity of his murderous mother - into second p lace.
Kevin Spacey’s unmasking at the close of crime thriller The Usual Suspe cts is in third, while the revelation about Luke Skywalker and Darth Vade r in The Empire Strikes Back is fourth.

ANDERSON’S CONTRACT STIPULATIONS FOR FAMILY

PAMELA ANDERSON is so determined to be a hands-on mum, she demands time o ff in her work contracts so she can be with her two boys.
The former Baywatch beauty and her ex-husband Tommy Lee are parents to sons Brandon, 14, and 12-year-old Dylan, who live with the actress in a C alifornia trailer park.
Anderson insists her boys are so important, she makes sure her work doe sn’t interfere with their daily routine.
She tells Britain’s Daily Mirror, "They come first, everything else is secondary. I have gone as far as putting them in my contracts with people so I don’t miss a baseball game, I don’t miss a practice. I am there for breakfast, to drive them to school."

KAPOOR SICK OF SLUMDOG

Bollywood superstar ANIL KAPOOR is tired of his link to SLUMDOG MILLIONAI RE, insisting he’s desperate to "move on" from the role which introduced him to international audiences.
The Indian actor played game show host Prem Kumar in Danny Boyle’s Osca r-winning movie in 2008 and admits he still fields questions about the bo x office hit two years later.
Now Kapoor, who went on to land a role on hit U.S. drama 24, is urging fans and friends to stop asking him about his Slumdog success.
He tells Britain’s GMTV, "It was such a long time (ago). Very nostalgic , but I want to get over it. I want to forget about it but people won’t l et me forget about it. I just want to move on. Please, let’s move on. I’d been in 100, more than 100 films, (before Slumdog)."

HATHAWAY IS A HIT IN LONDON PUB

Hollywood actress ANNE HATHAWAY is winning over locals while filming a ne w movie in London - by embracing the hard-partying pub scene.
Hathaway is currently in the British capital working on an adaptation o f David Nicholls’ novel, One Day, and has spent her time off relaxing in the Prince Arthur pub in Hackney, East London.
The Devil Wears Prada star impressed the bar staff and regulars at a re cent late-night party when she took the microphone and performed an impro mptu cabaret set into the early hours.
But the 27 year old has kept up her professionalism - by turning up on set ready to work despite her late nights.
A source tells Britain’s Daily Mail, "She’s built up quite a reputation since the performance. But whatever she does in the pub, Anne has an env iable knack of showing up for filming the next morning as fresh as a dais y, as though she’d gone to sleep at 9pm with a mug of cocoa." (PAW/WNWCDA

PATTINSON’S REP DISMISSES CAR ACCIDENT REPORT

ROBERT PATTINSON’s rep has dismissed reports the actor was involved in a minor car accident in California on Saturday (24Jul10) following claims h e shunted another vehicle as he reversed out of a driveway.
The Twilight hunk is said to have bumped his car into a Kia hatchback p arked nearby as he left a friend’s home in Malibu.
The owner of the Kia, Rob Gottschlich, told America’s OK! magazine his vehicle suffered minor damage in the accident but he took it in good humo ur, saying, "If I had a nice car like a Lexus or something, maybe (I woul d be concerned), but I’ve got an old Kia. I am going to ask Rob next time I see him for free tickets to the next Twilight film." The incident was not reported to local police and a spokesperson for th e British actor is adamant the accident never took place, adding, "Robert was pulling out of a parking space after a quiet day in Malibu yesterday and was relentlessly pursued by paparazzi. He has no knowledge of having bumped or damaged another car in the process."

CAMPBELL DEFENDS GIBSON

Director MARTIN CAMPBELL has come to the defence of beleaguered actor MEL GIBSON insisting his former colleague is a "terrific guy".
The Braveheart star has been at the centre of a media storm since his s plit from ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, the mother of his young daught er, Lucia, turned nasty.
The Russian singer has accused her former partner of beating her and kn ocking out her teeth, while taped phone conversations appear to feature t he movie star hurling abuse at his lover in a series of venomous rants.
But Campbell, who directed Gibson in recent thriller Edge Of Darkness, is adamant the negative headlines plaguing the actor are just "sad".
Speaking at the Comic-Con convention in San Diego, California, he tells the AAP, "I think Mel is a brilliant actor. I think Mel is a terrific gu y. I just think it is sad. I just wish him the best."

NEW YORK GOES CRAZY FOR MAD MEN

Thousands of MAD MEN fans lined the streets of New York City on Sunday (2 5Jul10) dressed in 1960s clothes to watch the season premiere and take pa rt in a costume competition.
To celebrate the launch of the fourth season, TV bosses held a free scr eening in the city’s famous Times Square, with guest appearances from the show’s stars including January Jones and Elizabeth Moss.
Executives also launched a costume contest with prizes for fans with th e best Mad Men dress sense.
Nearly 10,000 devotees crowded into the area and many paid tribute to t he 1960-set show by donning period clothing, and Moss admitted she was de lighted to see such a healthy turn out.
She told the crowd, "It’s a dream come true to be here in the middle of Manhattan for the premiere. I live in New York. I love this city and I’m proud of it."

GLEE SHINES AT TV.COM NOW AWARDS

TV musical GLEE was the big winner at the TV.com NOW Awards on Friday (23 Jul10) as fans voted it the Funniest New Show on the small screen.
The all-singing, all-dancing series, about a high school show choir, sa w off competition from sitcoms Community, Modern Family and The Middle to take home the prize.
Jane Lynch, who plays Glee’s acid-tongued cheerleading coach Sue Sylves ter, was given the Makes Me Laugh Just By Showing Up honour, while Kristi n Chenoweth was named the Guest Star We Wish Stayed Around Longer for her cameo.
True Blood lovers Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer were named the Sexiest TV Couple, while their co-star Alexander Skarsgard’s vampire role earned him the Best Performance of a Non-Human Character statue.
The ceremony, held in San Diego, California to coincide with Comic-Con 2010, also saw former Lost star Daniel Dae Kim accept the Saddest Goodbye trophy for the desert island drama, which went off the air in May (10).
Kim was also victorious - he was named the Actor We Can’t Wait to See B ack on TV ahead of his role as Chin Ho Kelly on the upcoming Hawaii Five- O remake.

SWEDISH DIRECTOR HALLDOFF DIES

Swedish filmmaker JAN HALLDOFF has lost his battle with cancer at the age of 71.
The Life’s Just Great director passed away on Friday (23Jul10) in his h ometown of Stockholm, reports Variety.com.
Halldoff made his debut with The D.T.s in 1966 before becoming one of h is native country’s most prolific directors, releasing several box office hits.
But his last film, 1982’s The Score, was a commercial flop and was even cited as a factor in the bankruptcy of production company Europa Film.
Halldoff is survived by his wife, Kerstin.

BARDOT FURIOUS OVER DONKEY STUNT

French film star BRIGITTE BARDOT is urging Russian prosecutors to file th e "strictest possible" criminal charges against a man who strapped a terr ified donkey to a parachute and sent it flying over a beach.
The former Hollywood siren-turned-animal rights activist was furious to hear about the cruel promotional stunt, in which the creature was sent p arasailing over a bay in southern Russia earlier this month (Jul10).
Bardot is demanding officials bring in new animal cruelty laws to punis h Vasily Gorobets, the man allegedly behind the donkey campaign.
In an open letter to Russian prosecutor Yury Chaika, Bardot writes, "I ask you to react with the strictest possible legal measures to a horrendo us act of cruelty towards a donkey in Golubitskaya.
"The donkey was strapped to a parachute and for more than half an hour was sailing in the air, screaming from horror and causing shock amongst c hildren and adults on the beach.
"Finally the poor animal landed, also in a horrific manner, and by then being hardly alive. I want you to act so that not only people responsibl e for this horrendous case are punished, but so that situation never happ ens again." Police officers have said they won’t look into the case because there h ave been no complaints.

JOLIE: ‘SPY SAGA HAS GIVEN SALT A BOOST’

ANGELINA JOLIE is convinced her new movie SALT has been given a boost by the real-life scandal involving Russian spies working undercover in Ameri ca - because the movie’s plot is "more real than we could have guessed".
The Hollywood actress plays a CIA agent accused of being a secret Russi an operative plotting to assassinate the U.S. president in the new action thriller.
The film’s release comes just weeks after 10 Russian agents were deport ed from America after they admitted living under false identities in the U.S. while sending secret information back to their homeland. They were r ecently handed back to officials in Moscow in return for the release of f our Russian convicts in a so-called ’spy swap’.
Jolie launched Salt in Russia on Sunday (25Jul10), and speaking at the premiere in Moscow, she admitted the news story had fascinated everyone w ho worked on the movie.
She told reporters, "We discovered it (the movie’s plot) was more real than we could have guessed. Truth really is stranger than fiction…

MEN CHARGED IN DOUGLAS CASE

Two men have been detained in California on suspicion of supplying MICHAE L DOUGLAS’ jailed son CAMERON with drugs.
The Wall Street star’s 31-year-old son was sentenced to five years in p rison in April (10) after pleading guilty to charges of methamphetamine p ossession with intent to distribute and one count of possessing cocaine.
Cameron is believed to have agreed a deal with prosecutors to name his alleged suppliers to avoid a mandatory 10-year prison sentence.
Brothers David Escalera, 34, and Eduardo Escalera have now been arreste d and charged over allegations they trafficked "large amounts" of methamp hetamine to Cameron, according to the New York Post.
They are being held without bail.
