EVERETT DISCOVERS ‘VILLAINOUS’ ROOTS
RUPERT EVERETT was stunned to discover he is descended from a womanising sailor and a fraudster while exploring his family tree for a genealogy se ries.
The Brit learned his great-grandfather Frederick ran away to sail the h igh seas when his stockbroker dad died penniless, following allegations o f fraud, while researching his ancestors on U.K. TV show Who Do You Think You Are? The actor’s research also revealed that Frederick married three times, lived with a mistress and abandoned his son Cyril at the age of three so he could continue his adventures in China, Australia and South America.
Everett says, "My great-grandfather Fred was a philanderer and a music hall villain. He was a typical adventurer at a very exciting time. He rea lly was a proper old sailor." The My Best Friend’s Wedding star uncovered more than just his family’s darker side during the programme - he also met his great aunt Marguerite for the very first time.
He adds, "I’ve not got a new auntie, Marguerite, who is an amazing char acter. I love the story of my family. It would be the kind of book I woul d like to read."
