NOLAN WILL HAVE SURGERY IF TEST REVEALS CANCER GENE
Irish singer LINDA NOLAN is prepared to undergo a full mastectomy if a ge netic test shows her breast cancer is likely to return.
The Nolans star was diagnosed with the disease in 2006 and, as part of her treatment, had a breast removed. She has since received the all-clear ..
Linda’s sister Anne has also overcome the disease, but the singing fami ly was rocked again earlier this year (10) when Bernie Nolan was also dia gnosed with breast cancer.
Three out of the six siblings have now battled the disease, and Linda h as decided to take a genetic test to determine whether she has a gene whi ch makes her more susceptible to the disease.
And the 51 year old has made the brave decision to undergo preventive s urgery if the findings show she’s at risk of a relapse - the procedure co uld involve the removal of her other breast.
She tells Britain’s The One Show, "I feel like I’ve been sitting on a t imebomb waiting for breast cancer to reappear so I’ve decided to do somet hing about it by having the genetic test myself. I won’t find out the res ults for another four weeks, but I’m much clearer in my mind as to what I ‘ll do if they do come back positive - I will have preventive surgery.
"We have to make choices and thankfully because of scientists and genet ic testing we are able to do that. They are terrible choices, but they’re choices our mothers and grandmothers never got to make. If the choice is life then that’s the choice I’m going to take…
"I don’t have children of my own but I want to see my nieces and nephew s grow up… It is a little bit (like being on) tenterhooks, we’re waitin g for Bernie’s results as well. She’s got some nasty side effects from th e chemo… but she’s still positive still."
