VERSACE ‘SAD’ OVER MALE MODEL’S DEATH

Designer DONATELLA VERSACE has spoken of her sadness following the loss o f top male model TOM NICON, who was found dead in Milan, Italy on Friday (18Jun10).
The 22-year-old Frenchman, who has fronted dozens of campaigns for fash ion’s biggest names and was the face of Burberry, is believed to have jum ped from his apartment building in the Italian city on Friday - a day bef ore the start of Milan Fashion Week.
He had returned to his home following a fitting for the Versace menswea r runway show before his death, and the label’s boss Donatella Versace ha s expressed her shock over Nicon’s passing.
She tells Britain’s Daily Mail, "He was with us on Friday morning for a final fitting. He seemed fine and calm. He had already done three or fou r shows with us and he was a sweet boy. We just can’t understand why he d id what he did. We would never have thought he would do something like th is. When we heard the news, we were all so upset and we still are all so very sad.'’ According to the publication, police officers in Milan are treating the death as a suicide and investigating claims he was depressed after split ting from his girlfriend.

DOWNEY, JR. RECEIVES CHICAGO FILM HONOUR

Hollywood actor ROBERT DOWNEY, JR. has been honoured in Chicago, Illinois for his career achievements.
The Iron Man star attended an event at the city’s Ritz Carlton Hotel on Saturday (19Jun10), where he was presented with The Gene Siskel Film Cen ter’s Renaissance Award.
Paying tribute to Downey, Jr., a representative for the organisation de clared the star as "one of the most respected and versatile actors of his generation".

CASE AGAINST SURFERS PROTECTING MCCONAUGHEY DECLARED MISTRIAL

A Malibu, California judge has once again declared a mistrial in the batt ery case against two surfers accused of assaulting several snappers who w ere following MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY.
Skylar Peak and Philip Hildebrand were arrested and charged with misdem eanour battery after confronting photographers as they tried to get shots of the actor on a Malibu beach in June, 2008.
The surfers allegedly threw one photographer into the water as he tried to shoot pictures, while another snapper claims he was attacked and his camera was thrown into the ocean by the pair.
The case went to court earlier this month (Jun10) but the jury failed t o reach a verdict on Friday (18Jun10) and Malibu Superior Court Judge Law rence Mira declared it a mistrial.
The surfers, who pleaded not guilty, are due to return to court on 2 Ju ly (10), when the prosecution will decide whether or not to retry the cas e.
The prosecution’s previous attempt to hold the pair to justice in March (10) was deemed a mistrial after Peak’s mother was seriously injured in a car crash.

MADONNA PLANS BIG RENOVATIONS FOR NEW YORK HOME

Pop superstar MADONNA is planning to give her New York townhouse a major revamp by splashing out $1.7 million (=C2=A31.13 million) on renovations, including her own private gym.
The Material Girl recently purchased a $32 million (=C2=A321.3 million) property in Manhattan’s Upper East Side and she has filed applications w ith city authorities for building permits to add another floor to the lav ish home.
The paperwork details Madonna’s plans to gut the existing bed and bathr ooms and create a new master suite on the third floor with a walk in clos et, while she wants to have a hair salon and luggage room across the hall , reports the New York Post.
If all goes to plan, the finished product will boast 10 bedrooms and 13 bathrooms, complete with a wine cellar and playroom for her son Rocco an d adopted kids David and Mercy.
Madonna is also mother to teenage daughter Lourdes.

REED IS KING OF MERMAID PARADE

Veteran rocker LOU REED accepted a bizarre honour in New York on Saturday (19Jun10) - when he agreed to rule as king over the annual beachfront Me rmaid Parade.
The singer and his wife Laurie Anderson took to the boardwalk at the ko oky Coney Island event in his native Brooklyn to preside as king and quee n over the ceremony, which celebrates marine life.
But the devastating effects of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico w as not far from people’s minds - many parade participants, who dressed up as mermaids and sea creatures for the annual party, marked their skin wi th black body paint to represent the disaster’s impact on local birds and sea life.

NEW KIDS THRILL WITH BACKSTREET BOYS DUET

Fans at a NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK concert were in for a double delight on S aturday (19Jun10) - when the pop stars brought out the BACKSTREET BOYS fo r a duet.
The 1980s group thrilled fans at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall when they began to cover Backstreet Boys’ hit I Want It That Way for the sold-out crowd.
And the audience proceeded to go wild when the Backstreet Boys themselv es stepped onto the stage to finish the song with the New Kids.
After the show, New Kid Donnie Wahlberg wrote on his Twitter.com blog, "As for TONIGHT’S Concert…. BACKSTREET BOYS got my respect forever! Tha t was awesome! What a night!… My heart is full."

SHELTON AND LAMBERT PLAN SPRING WEDDING

Country music stars BLAKE SHELTON and MIRANDA LAMBERT will wed next sprin g (11).
The couple became engaged in May (10) and they are already well underwa y with their wedding plans after turning to professionals for help.
Lambert tells People.com, "We are both so busy that we have people help ing us with the plans. I am just trying to enjoy being engaged. It’s kind of a magical time." And the stars, who have been dating for five years, are refusing to wai t around to become man and wife - they’re planning the ceremony for next year (11) because they can’t bear to be apart from one another.
Shelton says, "We’ve been together long enough to know that we’re more miserable apart than we are together. I think we’re meant to be together, so we’re just going to do something about it - finally!"

NEW YORK YANKEES CHIEFS DENY GAGA BAN

A representative for the New York Yankees has shot down reports LADY GAGA has been banned from the team clubhouse after allegedly infuriating base ball bosses with her drunken behaviour on Friday night (18Jun10).
The Poker Face hitmaker, a lifelong Yankees fan, joined star players in cluding Ronson Cano for drinks inside the team’s clubhouse after they los t the Subway Series game 4-0 to the New York Mets.
The New York Post claimed an inebriated Gaga - who was scantily dressed in a Yankees shirt worn over black underwear with fishnet stockings - ha d angered team bosses by talking her way into the private lounge after th e game.
The tabloid went on to allege the singer stunnned sportsmen by groping her breasts over her jersey before leaving via a private exit.
News of Gaga’s raunchy antics quickly reached the Yankees’ top executiv es - and co-chairman Hal Steinbrenner was reportedly so angry at the reve lation, he’d notified all staff at Yankee Stadium that the eccentric pop star is no longer welcome in the clubhouse.
But the Yankees’ general manager, Brian Cashman, dismissed the claims, telling ESPN.com, "She’s not banned. Celebrities aren’t banned." Acknowledging the singer’s presence at the venue on Friday, Cashman add s, "There is just a time and place. It is not her fault." It’s not the first time the singer has hit the headlines at a baseball game - Gaga caused controversy earlier this month (Jun10) when she attend ed a match between the Mets and the visiting San Diego Padres, when she d emanded a seat change after noticing photographers snapping her every mov e.
She was moved to comedian Jerry Seinfeld’s vacant box but proceeded to take off her leather jacket to reveal her underwear and then began to fli p her middle finger at the snappers down below.

BON JOVI SPLITS FROM MANAGER

Rocker JON BON JOVI and his longtime manager have parted ways after worki ng together for the past five years.
The Bon Jovi frontman recently cut ties with Jack Rovner after deciding they were heading in "different directions".
It was rumoured Rovner had been fired by the singer after messing up a VIP ticket package, sold as part of the group’s latest tour, which was me ant to give die-hard fans the chance to meet and greet their idols.
However, Bon Jovi has dismissed the allegations, insisting creative dif ferences is the real reason behind the business split.
In an email to the New York Post’s Page Six gossip column, he writes, " The boring truth is we decided to go in different directions and thanked both Jack and his team for a great job. He is and will remain a close fri end and someone who I will be very grateful to for his dedication." Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for Vector Management says, "Jack and everyone at Vector are very proud of the work they did (with Bon Jovi) together o ver the last five years, including their first Grammy Awards, first numbe r one chart debuts globally, and even a number one on the country charts.

BRODY LIVED IN THE JUNGLE ON PREDATORS SHOOT

ADRIEN BRODY shunned fancy hotels and spent weeks living in a damp "hut i n the jungle" while filming new movie PREDATORS - because he was determin ed to bring a sense of realism to his character.
The Oscar winner has stepped into the alien-fighting franchise made fam ous by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1980s for a big screen revival, and t he actor stayed on location in Hawaii to shoot the monster movie.
Brody, who plays a mercenary leading a team into the jungle, admits he was determined to get into character ahead of filming and refused an offe r to stay in a luxurious hotel in favour of a ramshackle hut set in the d epths of the rainforest.
He says, "We shot in a thousand acres of lush tropical rainforest, a lo cation of prehistoric dimensions with giant leaves and jungle canopies. I stayed in a hut in the jungle. I isolated myself in a damp room, with sc reen doors, not an air-conditioned hotel room. I studied meditation techn iques. My nightly reading consisted of military training books, paramilit ary manuals, field guides and special-operation manuals. I had no mobile phone reception… The only time I would leave set was to exercise… I w ould get food, but otherwise I was on my own in one of the rainiest place in the world." And Brody is adamant all the "discomfort" he suffered while preparing f or the role was worth it.
He adds, "I felt the need to stay focused and for this period of time a nd just be disciplined. It is an effort to be faithful for a character an d convey something truthfully and I know I can subject myself to severe d iscomfort."

ASHLEY GREENE has lavished praise on her grounded TWILIGHT co-star ROBERT PATTINSON - insisting the British actor has "not changed a bit" despite his phenomenal success.
Pattinson landed his fist high-profile role with a small part in 2005’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but went on to find international s uperstardom with a leading role in the vampire franchise.
But Greene, who has worked with the star on three of the Twilight films , admits that despite the fame and legions of adoring fans, Pattinson has managed to remain grounded.

BOYLE AFRAID OF OLYMPIC RESPONSIBILITY

DANNY BOYLE is terrified about directing the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games in London, because "the British are difficult to please".
The Trainspotting filmmaker didn’t hesitate when he was approached to h elm the project, but admits he now faces "one of the most frightening thi ngs" he’s ever had to deal with.
He now feels the mounting pressure to come up with a spectacular show t o rival the display which opened the Games at Beijing, China in 2008, whe re his "childhood hero", Led Zeppelin rocker Jimmy Page, played for the c rowd.
And Boyle, who hails from Lancashire, England, is hoping to make his fe llow countrymen proud.
He tells Britain’s Sunday Times, "I didn’t even sleep on it. I just sai d, ‘I’ll do it!’ (But) the British are difficult to please." The director has been busy reading poems about London for inspiration, and is already planning to use the 80,000 spectators in the arena as part of his show.
He adds, "There’ll be expensive toys and a sound system but, when you t hink about it, something like the Mexican wave is amazing, isn’t it? That ’s just using people in the stadium… They’ll have their voices and thei r feet, although it’s a concrete floor so they might not make much of an impression. But they can clap."

SNOOP DOGG ‘ASTONISHED’ BY DUTCH FESTIVAL BAN

Rap superstar SNOOP DOGG is "astonished" by Dutch officials’ decision to ban him from an upcoming music festival after city authorities declared h e was not welcome in the area.
The Beautiful hitmaker, who has a history of legal problems, was due to headline the free open-air Parkpop event in The Hague later this month ( 27Jun10), along with singer/actress Juliette Lewis and German pop star Ne na.
But Snoop’s slot was scrapped on Thursday (17Jun10) after city authorit ies objected to the rapper’s involvement in the festival, insisting his c oncert was cancelled "in order to preserve the free, open and friendly na ture of Parkpop".
And the shock move has left the hip-hop star stunned.
In a statement released by his representatives at record label EMI, the y say, "Snoop Dogg is astonished by the decision of the Mayor of The Hagu e. (He) is a mainstay at music festivals all over the world and has perfo rmed at all of these without incident." The ruling in the Netherlands isn’t the first immigration trouble Snoop has experienced. He only recently gained permission to return to the U.K .. following a fracas at London’s Heathrow Airport in 2006, which led to h is arrest.
British border officials labelled him a threat, citing his prior drug a nd firearms offences, but the star challenged the ruling in court and the ban was lifted earlier this year (10), allowing him to headline the lege ndary Glastonbury festival this summer (10).

MINOGUE TO RELEASE NEW DANCE ALBUM

Pregnant pop star DANNII MINOGUE is setting her sights on the music chart s again after signing a new recording contract.
Kylie Minogue’s younger sister, who is due to welcome her first child n ext month (Jul10), has not released any new music since 2007 - the year s he joined the judging panel of Simon Cowell’s TV talent contest The X Fac tor.
But the 37 year old is now said to have inked a $1.5 million (=C2=A31 m illion) deal with executives at dance label Ministry of Sound, with plans for a new single by the end of the year (10) - after she and her rugby b oyfriend Kris Smith become first-time parents.
A source tells Britain’s Sunday Mirror, "Dannii is thrilled about the d eal." Minogue, who has previously racked up 12 number one singles on the U.K.
Dance Charts, will reportedly film her efforts to relaunch her pop caree r for a reality TV series.

COLE SLAMMED OVER LOAN REPORT

British singer CHERYL COLE has come under fire from anti-debt campaigners after revealing she took an unsecured loan to kick start her career.
The Girls Aloud singer admitted she borrowed from a neighbourhood ‘loan shark’ to help her fund her pop star dreams as a teenager growing up in Newcastle, England.
She said, "I got a temporary loan from the guy that comes round your ho use, to get myself something - some hairspray, make-up and an outfit. It was the latest thing from (clothes store) River Island. It was the top ev eryone wanted." But charity campaigners insist her remarks set a bad example for young girls, who could end up with huge debts due to extortionate interest rate s charged by unofficial lenders.
A spokesperson for the National Debtline says, "Unfortunately, unlike i n Cheryl’s case, there are thousands of people who don’t get the dream li festyle afterwards and pay the price."

URBAN GIVES UP FATHER’S DAY FOR KIDMAN

Country singer KEITH URBAN sacrificed a Father’s Day celebration on Sunda y (20Jun10) - because the holiday falls on his wife NICOLE KIDMAN’s birth day.
The Moulin Rouge! actress turned 43 on Sunday and her husband decided t o dedicate the weekend to her, rather than make any special plans for him self.
But Urban, who shares daughter Sunday Rose with Kidman, insists the Ant ipodeans will be celebrating Father’s Day in September (10) - when Austra lians observe the annual event.
Speaking before Sunday’s celebrations, he told People.com, "You know wh at we’re going to do this year? Because it actually falls on my wife’s bi rthday - the same day - I decided, instead of us trying to share the day, I’d rather it be her birthday. We’re going to celebrate the Australian F ather’s Day, which I think is in September. Then next year we’ll gone ba ck to the U.S. one (in June)." Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June by many nations across the world, including the U.S., the U.K., France, Ireland, Japan an d South Africa.

JAZZ TRUMPETER DIXON DIES

Jazz star BILL DIXON has died at the age of 84.
The celebrated trumpeter passed away at his home in North Bennington, V ermont last Wednesday (16Jun10). The cause of death has yet to be reveale d.
Dixon enjoyed a career spanning over four decades and performed with th e likes of Cecil Taylor, Wilbur Ware and saxophonist Archie Shepp, with w hom he formed a jazz quartet.
His best-known records included 1967’s Intents and Purposes, 1993’s Vad e Mecum and the six-disc set Odyssey, which he produced himself in the 19 80s.
He was also famed for setting up The October Revolution in Jazz in New York in 1964, in what became the first free jazz festival.
Dixon is survived by his pater Sharon Vogel, his two children, Claudia and William R. Dixon II, and two grandchildren.
