WOODY ALLEN only makes movies to "amuse" his ex-girlfriend DIANE KEATON a nd a group of close pals - insisting their opinions are the only ones tha t matter.
The director famously refuses to revisit his work once it’s been releas ed and reveals he only steps behind the camera to create stories to enter tain his close circle of friends, including his Annie Hall leading lady K eaton, who he dated in the 1970s.
He explains, "I will say this: when I finish a film completely, there’s about a half dozen, maybe eight people, that I do want to see the movie.
I will invite Diane Keaton here (to watch it). I will invite some person al friends of mine, between six and 10 maximum. And once they’ve seen the picture, I don’t much care any more. That’s the fun that I get: to sit i n here with Keaton, or my friends, and amuse or delight them with it. Tha t gives me a kick. After that, it doesn’t matter to me." And Allen insists he is no perfectionist when it comes to shooting film s - because he’d rather call it a day and head home to watch a sports gam e.
He adds, "If you look at guys who are not lazy - let’s say Steven Spiel berg - you know, they work. They go out on location somewhere, and they l ive in the desert for a year, or in some godforsaken country for ages, ma king a film. And they shoot every angle and do everything. I can’t do tha t. I don’t have the patience. (On set) I’m thinking, ‘There’s a basketbal l play-off game on tonight, or the Yankees are playing.’ You know, artist ic perfection is not my top priority."
