BBC CRITICISED OVER POTTER COVERAGE

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:42 am

Bosses at a BBC radio station have been criticised for giving the HARRY P OTTER franchise "undue prominence" during a day-long dedication to the fi lm series last year (09), according to the corporation’s governing body.
Britain’s BBC Radio 1 came under fire from commercial industry body Rad ioCentre after the station broadcast Potter coverage throughout 15 July, 2009 to mark the release of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
The ‘Harry Potter Day’ included mentions of the film across Radio 1’s m ain shows.
In response to the official complaint by RadioCentre, the BBC Trust - w hich governs all of the public-funded network’s output - upheld part of t he claim.
A report from the Trust states, "The verbal references to the brand or the film were not used sparingly nor were there very strong journalistic reasons for repeated references.
"The number of references and the manner in which the trails were deliv ered amounted to undue prominence." However, the body rejected claims the network broke the rules by pluggi ng the film.
A statement from a Radio 1 spokesperson reads, "While this was not a br each of Radio 1’s service licence we take note of the findings around tim ings and promotion of these events.
"We have been assured that this ruling will not prevent Radio 1 from re flecting music and culture in a timely fashion in the future." The news comes just months after BBC bosses were found to have breached official guidelines by unfairly promoting U2’s last album, No Line On Th e Horizon, with a day of coverage across the network.
