SILVERCHAIR BEER BOSS GIVES UP BOOZE

SILVERCHAIR bassist and beer brewery owner CHRIS JOANNOU has pledged to g ive up alcohol for a month.
The Australian rocker, who plays in the band with Natalie Imbruglia’s e x-husband Daniel Johns, indulges his love of booze as co-owner of Lovells Lager, which he helped set up with his music producer pal Matt Lovell.
But Joannou has decided to give up his beloved beverage for a full four weeks as part of the Dry July campaign, which encourages regular drinker s to quit alcohol for a month to raise money for charity.
The bassist has signed up as an ambassador for the scheme and will be t aking part in the annual abstinence.
He says, "I love a beer as much as the next bloke but to give it a rest for just one month of the year seems nothing for such a top cause. It’s also going to be a great rest for the old liver. So, it’s a win-win.
"I’m sure a lot of people will see an alcohol brand associated with Dry July and they’ll be scratching their heads. (But) I’m sure that after a month when everyone’s been hanging out for one, it will be great to be ab le to hand them a Lovells."

RAPER TECH N9NE ARRESTED

Rapper TECH N9NE was detained by police on Wednesday (23Jun10) on an outs tanding arrest warrant.
The hip-hop star’s car was pulled over after he was allegedly caught sp eeding through Kansas City, Missouri, and he was detained when cops disco vered the warrant for his arrest, which was issued after he missed a cour t appearance.
The rapper - real name Aaron Dontez Yates - had been summoned to face a charge of "placing illegal banners" in Blue Springs, Missouri, but faile d to show up, reports KansasCity.com.
Yates told his fans about the incident by posting a message on Twitter.
com which simply stated: "I’m getting arrested." He later uploaded photos of himself being helped into a police car as w ell as another snap of himself in a prison cell.
Yates is said to have spent less than half an hour behind bars before p osting a $300 (=C2=A3200) bond.

RENOWNED SAXOPHONIST ANDERSON DIES

Famed saxophonist FRED ANDERSON has died, aged 81.
The musician, who owned the iconic Velvet Lounge music venue in Chicago , Illinois, passed away on Thursday (24Jun10).
His cause of death is not yet known, according to the Associated Press.
Throughout his career Anderson acted as mentor to many rising jazz star s, including Ken Vandermark, drummer Hamid Drake, Josh Abrams, Fred Jackson and George Lewis.

PERRY: ‘WORLD CUP IS RUINING BRAND ROMANCE’

KATY PERRY is convinced the ongoing soccer World Cup is taking a toll on her romance with RUSSELL BRAND - because the British comic is spending al l of his time watching the games on TV.
The singer is currently in London promoting her new single California G urls, while Brand is also back in the U.K. following a whirlwind publicit y tour for his new movie Get Him To The Greek.
Perry reveals she has barely spent any time with her future husband bec ause his attention is fully-focused on the soccer tournament in South Afr ica.
And the pop star admits she was shunned by her fiance on Wednesday (23J un10) when Brand’s beloved team England took on Slovenia in a crucial qua lifier.
She tells Britain’s BBC Radio 1, "It’s funny because he’s always there for me and we’re always there for each other. (On Wednesday) we had a day off - he had a day off as well because he’s been busy promoting his movi e and the game was on.
"Everybody in England, everywhere, was quiet, no one is on the street.
"We were watching the game and I was like messing with him saying, ‘Dar ling, I really want to go outside.’ And he was so caught, he was like, ‘B ut the game, the game…’ But I knew I wasn’t gonna pull him away from th at game. So I just took a nap.
"Everything is about football right now. It’s like, when I was with him last night he was up late watching football. And he was online reading a ll about it and it’s like, ‘How much can you read?’"

LENNON DOODLE RAISES $56,000

A doodle drawn by late BEATLES star JOHN LENNON has raised nearly $56,000 (=C2=A337,250) at auction.
The caricature was scribbled by the musician during one of his famous 1 969 ‘Bed-In’ demonstrations with his wife Yoko Ono to protest the Vietnam War.
The sketch was created during Lennon’s week in bed in Montreal, Canada and it has now sold for a massive $55,875 (=C2=A337,250) at an auction in London.
The sale at Christie’s on Thursday (24Jun10) also included a jacket onc e worn by late superstar Michael Jackson, which fetched $33,750 (=C2=A322 ,500) -10 times its estimated price - as well as a guitar once owned by T he Who star Pete Townshend and another which belonged to the Sex Pistols’ Steve Jones.

PERRY SPARKS SECRET WEDDING RUMOURS

KATY PERRY accidentally sparked rumours she’s secretly wed fiance RUSSELL BRAND following a slip-up on British TV.
The singer, who is reportedly due to walk down the aisle with Brand lat er this year (10), taped an interview with Irish TV host Graham Norton in London on Thursday night (24Jun10).
And when asked about her relationship with the funnyman, Perry told Nor ton, "Life’s never dull with him - that’s why I married him," prompting g asps from the studio audience and the TV presenter.
Perry seemingly corrected her mistake, adding, "That’s why I’m marrying him!" The slip-up sparked a flurry of rumours the pair has already wed in a b id to keep their nuptials out of the spotlight. They have previously been reported to have scheduled their wedding for October (10).

JACKSON STILL THE KING OF POP IN BRITAIN

MICHAEL JACKSON is still the King of Pop in Britain - the tragic supersta r is the top-selling artist there in the year since his death.
As fans gather to mark the anniversary of his death at California’s For est Lawn Cemetery, where Jackson was laid to rest in September (09), offi cials for Britain’s Official Charts Company have revealed the Thriller si nger has sold 2.8 million albums and 1.5 million singles in Britain since his passing.
Jackson’s sales have placed him ahead of Canadian singer Michael Buble, who has sold just over two million albums in Britain during the same per iod.
The firm’s researchers have also listed Jackson’s top 10 biggest sellin g singles and albums in the U.K. since his death, to mark the year annive rsary.
Hit song Man In the Mirror was the most popular track, while Billie Jea n, Thriller and Smooth Criminal all sold more than 100,000 copies in the last year. The biggest selling album in Britain since the singer’s death is The Essential - selling just over 600,000 copies in 12 months. (KD/WNW

BROWN SETTLES CHILD SUPPORT DISPUTE

BOBBY BROWN has settled a long-running legal battle with his ex-girlfrien d over child support payments.
Whitney Houston’s former husband was jailed for four days in 2007 for s kipping payments to Kim Ward, the mother of two of his children, LaPrinci a, 20, and Bobby, Jr., 19.
Brown hit headlines again last year (09) when a judge issued a warrant for his arrest after he failed to attend a court hearing over accusations he owed Ward over $45,000 (=C2=A330,000). He settled the payment and sub sequently filed legal papers asking for his $5,500 (=C2=A33,667)-a month installments to be reduced.
The singer, who claimed a change in his income meant he could no longer afford the hefty payments, sent his lawyers back to Norfolk Probate Cour t in Massachusetts this week (beg21Jun10) to settle the matter.
Brown’s legal team has now reached an agreement with Ward over how much he will contribute to his kids’ college education, according to the Bost on Herald.
Norfolk Register of Probate Patrick McDermott tells the publication, "T he big issue was college expenses and how to handle those going forward. But it was quick and uneventful, and they seem to have wrapped up all the outstanding matters." The deal was agreed by a judge, but terms of the agreement were kept pr ivate.

JACKSON CHILDREN ENJOY VACATION PRIOR TO ANNIVERSARY

MICHAEL JACKSON’s mother KATHERINE treated his children to a sunshine bre ak in Hawaii just days before they were due to mark the first anniversary of their father’s death.
Prince Michael, 13, Paris, 12 and eight-year-old Blanket were photograp hed playing in the sea at a tropical resort on Thursday (24Jun10).
The children were reportedly planning to travel to the Thriller hitmake r’s hometown of Gary, Indiana on the year anniversary of his death on Fri day (25Jun10), according to TMZ.com.
Jackson matriarch Katherine is reportedly set to unveil a statue of the Thriller hitmaker outside the house where he began his career at a cerem ony in the family’s native town.

CAREY TO FIGHT VET’S ‘CRASS’ LAWSUIT

MARIAH CAREY’s lawyer has dismissed allegations the superstar owes almost $30,000 (=C2=A320,000) in medical fees to a veterinarian who treated her dogs, branding the doctor’s lawsuit "a crass publicity stunt".
Veterinarian Cindy Bressler filed a lawsuit in a New York court on Wedn esday (23Jun10), accusing the Hero hitmaker of paying just $8,231 (=C2=A3 5,487) of a $37,790 (=C2=A325,193) bill for providing "extraordinary serv ices" for her pet pooches.
According to court filings obtained by New York Post, Carey’s Jack Russ ell puppy, Dolomite, needed intensive care after being born to another on e of the singer’s dogs, Cha-Cha - who was only six months old when she ga ve birth.
Bressler’s attorney Michael Posner, said she "provided lifesaving, roun d-the-clock medical care to Mariah Carey’s puppy," adding, "This was a se rious medical matter that required professional care by a veterinarian an d veterinary nurses." However, Carey’s attorney, Orin Snyder, insists the singer will fight t he lawsuit.
He says, "This abusive lawsuit appears to be a crass publicity stunt. A s a matter of principle, Mariah intends to fight this baseless case and i s confident that it will be dismissed." Bressler is seeking the alleged bill balance of $29,559 (=C2=A319,706), plus legal fees.

JACKSON LAWYER FEARS CRIMINAL TRIAL AGAINST DOCTOR IS TWO YEARS AWAY

JOE JACKSON’s lawyer has revealed he’s speeding up plans to file a wrongf ul death suit against MICHAEL JACKSON’s doctor after learning the crimina l case against the physician could be two years away.
Brian Oxman sent Dr. Conrad Murray notice of his client’s legal plans i n March (10) and now hopes to file suit against him on Friday (25Jun10) - on the first anniversary of the King of Pop’s death.
The attorney says, "We’re hearing that the criminal trial may not take place until 2012." Oxman fears Murray’s involuntary manslaughter trial will drag on much l onger than expected.
He adds, "If you take the Anna Nicole Smith case as a road map, that ha s not happened and she died in 2007… The wrongful death case will do wh at the criminal case will not do.
"Joe Jackson is looking for justice for Michael… He wants to know wha t happened to his son, why it happened." Murray is accused of administering a fatal dose of anaesthetic Propofol to the pop star a year ago (25Jun09). He has pleaded not guilty to a cha rge of involuntary manslaughter.

FORMER THE KINKS BASSIST QUAIFE DIES

Former THE KINKS bassist PETE QUAIFE has died, aged 66.
The musician, who founded the group with school pals Ray and Dave Davie s and drummer Mick Avory in 1962, passed away on Thursday (24Jun10). His cause of death is not yet known, although Quaife had been undergoing kidn ey dialysis since 1998 after suffering renal failure.
The bassist featured on The Kinks’ early records, including the 1964 hi t You Really Got Me, before briefly quitting in 1966 after a car accident left him unable to perform.
He rejoined the band but was permanently replaced by John Dalton in 196 9.
Quaife last played with The Kinks in 1990 when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.
Frontman Ray Davies reportedly asked Quaife to rejoin the band to recor d new music in 2008 but he declined the offer, releasing a statement sayi ng he was stepping out of the spotlight for good.
After leaving The Kinks, Quaife formed his own band Mapleoak, before qu itting the industry to become a graphic artist and author.

CHENOWETH’S EMBARRASSING TOILET TROUBLE ONSTAGE

GLEE star KRISTIN CHENOWETH was left red faced on the Broadway stage once when she was struck with diarrhoea in the middle of a scene.
The actress was playing Glinda in the New York stage production of Wick ed, and during a flying scene she suddenly realised she needed help.
She recalls, "I’m Like (singing) ‘Elphie… oooh crap’… literally. An d I thought, ‘I’ll just run offstage. I ran offstage and one of the flyin g monkeys was standing there just minding his own business and I was like ‘Get me out of my dress! Get me out of my dress! Get me out!’ He said I turned into somebody he’d never seen before.
"I ripped off that dress, did my thing, went right back out onstage and hit the same pose."

RUSSELL BRAND knew KATY PERRY was the woman he wanted to marry after the pop star volunteered to scrub his mother’s kitchen floor.
The British funnyman fell for Perry after he brought her to London to h ave dinner with his beloved mum, Barbara, and saw the singer’s sweeter si de in a touching moment.
He says, "Katy is a big, big character. But when you are just hanging o ut with her, she’s a normal bird (girl). She’s a laugh and she’s strong. But with my mum, she’s really sweet.
"I remember the first time she came round and my mum was making some di nner. Mum’s clumsy like I am and she spilled some gravy. I remember just watching how Katy very naturally went and got a cloth, got down and start ed cleaning the floor without saying anything. And I thought, ‘Ah, I like that about you. I want to marry you.’" The couple is now preparing to exchange vows after Brand proposed on a romantic trip to India.

SCREENWRITER PLATER DIES

British screenwriter ALAN PLATER died on Friday (25Jun10) after a battle with cancer. He was 75.
Plater’s agent tells the BBC he had been "very robust" until he was che cked into a London hospice for his last week of life.
His career spanned six decades, during which time he wrote numerous wor ks for the stage and screen as well as six novels.
Plater received a BAFTA award for writing in 2005 and he accepted a lif etime achievement honour from the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain in 2007 ..
Among the full-length dramas he wrote was 2000 movie The Last of the Bl onde Bombshells, which starred Dame Judi Dench in the lead role.
His final screenplay was World War II drama Joe Maddison’s War, which w ill air on U.K. TV later this year (10).

BRODY SMOKED ‘FAKE WEED’ IN HIGH SCHOOL

ADRIEN BRODY smoked a specially created marijuana substitute for his role as a stoner in new movie HIGH SCHOOL.
The Oscar-winner plays a pot-smoking dealer in the film, who unwittingl y provides a high school with a high-strength drug.
And director John Stalberg reveals the actor was able to smoke a specia l "fake weed" as his character gets high.
Speaking at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Stalberg tells W ENN, "He was smoking this fake weed you can buy from High Times magazine called Fake Budz. It looks and burns like weed and it’s totally organic s o if the actors don’t smoke cigarettes it’s not gonna hurt them. We even used it for props because it comes on a branch. Adrien said when he read the script he laughed so hard that he pulled a muscle in his neck!" (LR/R

BLANCHETT’S THEATRE GOING GREEN

CATE BLANCHETT donned a hard hat to launch an eco-friendly construction p roject at her Sydney Theatre Company headquarters in Australia on Friday (25Jun10).
The actress, who is the artistic director of the company, has thrown he r support behind the Greening the Wharf initiative, which will see 1,900 solar panels installed in The Wharf Theatre at Sydney’s Walsh Bay.
The panels will provide 70 per cent of the theatre’s electricity requir ements - and the Elizabeth star wants more companies to follow their exam ple by investing in green energy alternatives.
Speaking at the launch, she told reporters, "Perhaps this whole area st retching from Barangaroo along Hickson Road and all the way to the Opera House (could be done up). We could be well on our way to becoming the fir st green arts precinct in the world.
"It’s not just the Sydney Theatre Company benefiting from the support o f the Department of Climate Change but every single cultural company down here." The actress has spent the last three years helping raise funds for the $4.5 million (=C2=A33 million) project.

LAW & ORDER: SVU MOVING TO NEW YORK?

TV bosses are reportedly moving the set of LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS U NIT to New York to save money on filming.
The legal drama is currently shot in North Bergen, New Jersey, but stat e authorities are set to suspend 20 per cent tax credits for film and TV productions.
And executives are hoping to take the spin-off show to the NBC studios in the Big Apple, where the Law & Order original is filmed. It was announ ced in May (10) the long-running series has been cancelled.
Law & Order: SVU actress Tamara Tunie was among those who spoke out in favour of keeping the New Jersey tax incentive at a court hearing earlier this month (Jun10), reports Deadline.com.
