JAPAN COURT BLOCKS THE COVE PROTESTERS

A court in Japan has banned protesters from demonstrating at a cinema whe re bosses plan to show controversial documentary THE COVE, about the slau ghter of dolphins in the country.
Louie Psihoyos and Ric O’Barry’s film follows a group of activists as t hey struggle with police and fishermen to gain access to a secluded cove in Taiji, southern Japan, where dolphins are hunted.
The film angered local fishermen, who argue dolphin hunting is part of their culture, and they slammed the covert techniques employed by the fil mmakers.
Protesters took to the streets of Tokyo earlier this month (Jun10) to f ight The Cove’s presence in Japan, forcing initial screenings to be cance lled in fear of noisy boycotts.
The Yokohama New Theater, a small cinema near Tokyo which planned to go ahead with showings beginning 3 July (10), was specifically targeted by demonstrations.
However, the Yokohama regional court issued an order on Friday (25Jun10 ) that has silenced angry mobs, and showings are scheduled to go on at th e venue as planned.

WATSON PARTIES WITH RUMOURED NEW LOVER AT GLASTONBURY

HARRY POTTER star EMMA WATSON has fuelled speculation she’s dating model GEORGE CRAIG after they were spotted partying together at this weekend’s (24-26Jun10) Glastonbury music festival.
The British actress, 20, split from long term partner Jay Barrymore in March (10) and she sparked rumours of a new romance with Craig - one of t he models who appeared in her latest ad campaign for British fashion hous e Burberry - after she was seen out in London with him earlier this month (Jun10).
Watson has further added to the speculation by spending time with Craig , who also fronts rock band One Night Only, at the iconic music event in England.
The star admits she’s enjoying the festival after wrapping up filming f or the final Harry Potter installment earlier this month (Jun10).
She says, "I’ve just arrived and I’m blown away by the size of the fest ival. We only finished filming last week so I’m still trying to get my he ad round it. I’m here to enjoy myself and plan to see lots of bands." (KD

OLYMPIAN HAMILTON RECOVERING FROM BRAIN SURGERY

Olympic-winning American ice skater SCOTT HAMILTON is recovering and "doi ng great" after undergoing brain surgery to remove a benign tumour.
The sportsman-turned-TV personality went under the knife at a hospital in Boston, Massachusetts on 23 June (10), to remove a growth near his pit uitary gland.
Doctors first detected the mass in 2004, seven years after Hamilton was treated for testicular cancer.
The 51 year old will remain in the intensive care unit for a few more d ays but he is expected to return home next week (ends04Jul10).
Hamilton’s representative tells People.com the athlete is "resting comf ortably in the hospital" with his wife, Tracie.
Doctors predict Hamilton will make a full recovery.

PASDAR ESCAPES JAIL OVER DUI

HEROES star ADRIAN PASDAR has escaped jail after pleading no contest to a misdemeanour charge of driving under the influence (DUI) following his a rrest in January (10).
The husband of Dixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines was detained by cops after he was allegedly clocked driving over 90 miles-an-hour (144.8 kilom etres-an-hour) on a freeway in Los Angeles.
The actor, 44, was officially charged with DUI in February (10) and he entered a not guilty plea during a court appearance later that month (Feb 10).
Pasdar pleaded no contest to one misdemeanour charge of DUI earlier thi s week (beg21Jun10). He was sentenced to 36 months probation and was orde red to pay $395 (=C2=A3263) in fines. The star was also told to complete an alcohol education program, as well as 10 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings , reports TMZ.com.
One other charge for refusing to submit a blood test was reportedly dro pped.

REDMOND O’NEAL VISITS FAWCETT’S GRAVE FOR THE FIRST TIME

FARRAH FAWCETT’s troubled son REDMOND O’NEAL was granted special leave fr om a sober-living facility on Friday (25Jun10) to visit his mother’s grav e for the first time on the year anniversary of her death.
Redmond, who was in jail when his mother died a year ago on 25 June (09 ), has since been placed in a drug treatment centre in Pasadena, Californ ia as he continues to battle the addictions that first put him behind bar s.
Bosses at the venue allowed him a one day pass on Friday so he could vi sit the Charlie’s Angels star’s grave exactly 12 months after she lost he r battle with anal cancer.
Redmond says, "It was very nice, very beautifully set up. I’m just happ y that I’m able to be there for her and let her know I’m doing all right.
" Fawcett’s loved ones also turned out in force in Beverly Hills, Califor nia on Friday (25Jun10) to pay tribute to the actress at the opening of t he headquarters of her Farrah Fawcett Foundation.
Her longtime lover Ryan O’Neal was joined by Redmond, as well as his da ughter Tatum O’Neal and Fawcett’s pal Alana Stewart.
Speaking at the event, Stewart said, "If I can help carry on Farrah’s m ission for the foundation, it’s an honour for me. I feel almost like she’ s a guardian angel watching over me, and I feel like she’s smiling down o n us and very happy that she died for a cause. She felt that she could he lp a lot of people and she could give a lot of people inspiration, courag e and hope." Ryan O’Neal adds, "Farrah was extremely loved around the world. We will try to keep that feeling in play."

MONJACK’S MOTHER ACCUSES SHARON MURPHY OF FAILING TO HELP

SIMON MONJACK’s mother has accused BRITTANY MURPHY’s mum SHARON of ignori ng her pleas to call a doctor in the hours before the filmmaker’s death.
Sharon Murphy found the director unconscious at the Hollywood Hills hom e he once shared with his late wife last month (May10). Paramedics determ ined he had suffered a cardiac arrest and pronounced him dead at the scen e. The Clueless star died in December (09) after collapsing at the same p roperty.
Monjack’s mother Linda has now taken aim at Sharon - alleging she plead ed with her to get Monjack medical help because she was so concerned abou t him on the night before he passed away.
Linda Monjack claims she spoke to Sharon and ordered her to get him to a hospital.
She tells Britain’s Daily Mail, "I’d pleaded with Sharon over and over during those last hours to get medical help, to get him to a hospital, bu t she didn’t… I’d call and he wasn’t even able to respond. It was at th is point that I demanded to speak to Sharon, and I told her, ‘Please, ple ase call the doctor. Get him to hospital. Please just get him some help’.
She told me that she’d ‘been through this before’ and that Simon was ove r the worse.
"I phoned again at 4am and Sharon told me Simon had vomited up a black substance and his eyes had been rolling in his head. I asked her if he wa s unconscious, but she told me he was sleeping. At 7am she called, sobbin g hysterically, saying Simon was dead. I cannot describe the pain." But Sharon Murphy’s publicist, Roger Neal, has slammed Monjack’s accusa tions, insisting she did everything she could to help the filmmaker.
He says, "When she found Simon, he had already passed away. The moment she found him, she called 911 for help. Sharon loved Simon like a son, an d he loved her like a mom. They had a close mother-son relationship. She is devastated."

SPECTOR THRILLED TO HEADLINE FESTIVAL INSPIRED BY GAY TEEN ACTIVIST=20

BE MY BABY singer RONNIE SPECTOR jumped at the chance to headline the All Love, All Woodstock festival in New York on Friday (25Jun10) because she was so moved by the plight of a gay teen who inspired the event.
The concert was inspired by Constance McMillen, who sued her Mississipp i school for the right to take her girlfriend to prom.
The legendary Ronettes singer tells Spinner.com, "I know what it feels like to grow up as an outsider because I’m a half-breed. People would pic ket me, cut my hair off and everything.
"I could identify with her (McMillen) because when I grew up my mother was black, my father was white and my mom was also half-Cherokee. I got p icked on so much because they didn’t know what I was." Spector admits she hasn’t met McMillen, who is still battling school of ficials, but she hopes to: "I’m so proud of her… As a mother, I felt fo r Constance. We have to accept all kids for who they are and treat them w ith love and understanding. How could you not let a girl come to a prom? I just thought it was outrageous."

RAHMAN SCRAPS AMERICAN TOUR DATES AFTER STAGE COLLAPSE=20

Oscar-winning SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE composer A.R. RAHMAN has been forced to postpone the remainder of his U.S. tour after a stage collapse in Michig an last weekend (19Jun10) left lights, rigging and other equipment irrepa rably damaged.
Crew were setting up the stage for the Jai Ho Concert: The Journey Home World Tour date at the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac when it collapsed, smashing vital equipment and injuring those beneath it.
Rahman scrapped the show and another scheduled for Toronto’s Air Canada Centre in Canada on Sunday (20Jun10) to allow time for stage equipment d amaged to be repaired or replaced.
But it’s now clear it will take more than a few days to make amends and so the composer/showman has scrapped the rest of his dates.
A statement from Rahman reads, "We hope to announce the new dates in th e coming weeks… We are working to recoup all that has been lost (the li ghts, the sets) which will take us over three weeks to complete.
"The vision for the show includes beautiful choreography and circus act s and it feels less than, not to include them. All the world over, the sh ow has received a very positive response from those who have seen it, whi ch makes it absolutely necessary for us to present a complete show and fe ature all the components that were lost due to the incident.
"While I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused our frien ds in the U.S. and Canada, maybe it`s a blessing in disguise, as we will have the opportunity to perform for you with even more energy and perfect ion. Once again, let us all pray that we are alive and thank you in advan ce for your understanding, love and co-operation." Six European shows, scheduled for the middle of next month (Jul10), are expected to go on as planned.

WELCH’S TEARFUL GLASTONBURY TRIUMPH

FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE singer FLORENCE WELCH choked backed tears as she thanked fans for their support during an emotion-charged set at the U.K.
’s Glastonbury Festival on Friday (25Jun10).
The British band first performed at the event in a tiny tent in 2007, a nd have returned each year since, playing higher on the bill each time.
And during their biggest show to date - on the 2010 festival’s opening day - frontwoman Welch was overcome by emotion several times during the b and’s set.
She even stopped the group during a rousing rendition of their hit Dog Days Are Over, visibly fighting back tears as she told the crowd: "This i s a pretty big moment for me. To start in a tent and then be here… it m eans a lot to be on this stage in front of you. I never want to leave." Her 2010 Glastonbury performance was tinged with sadness - she had hope d to perform for her heroes in Fleetwood Mac.
On a hunch, Welch worked out a new rendition of the supergroup’s The Ch ain for her set - but Stevie Nicks, Mick Fleetwood and company weren’t at the festival to cheer her on.
She told fans, "This is pretty much my favourite song of all time. All my heroes are in this band and I thought they were going to be here but t hey’re not.
"We’re never going to play it again. We hope you enjoy it Glastonbury, this one’s just for you." Welch later hit the festival’s main stage to perform her collaboration You Got The Dirtee Love with Dizzee Rascal just before Gorillaz’s headlin ing slot.

SNOOP RETURNS TO BRITISH STAGE AT GLASTONBURY

SNOOP DOGG made a triumphant return to the British live scene on Friday ( 25Jun10) with a hot show at the Glastonbury festival.
The rapper’s four-year visa ban was overturned earlier this year (10), and the Somerset, England festival was announced as his grand return.
Snoop was joined onstage by Tinie Tempah and Blur and Gorillaz star Dam on Albarn and British rapper Dizzee Rascal watched from the wings.
Tempah performed a version of U.K. number one single Pass Out with Snoo p, who took a moment to honour slain hip-hop hero Tupac Shakur by playing a medley of his songs.
Temperatures soared as Snoop hit the stage and he likened the vibe to a California day, adding, "I’m having so much fun. I had to smoke a bit of that weed, have something to drink." The marijuana fan ended his hits set by urging festivalgoers to smoke w eed every day.
Snoop Dogg, real name Calvin Broadus, was previously denied entry into the U.K. after he was arrested following a fracas at London’s Heathrow Ai rport in 2006.

LILITH FAIR DATES SCRAPPED

The revamped Lilith Fair has become the latest victim of the ongoing econ omic crisis - promoters have scrapped tour stops in Tennessee and Arizona due to poor ticket sales and performer cancellations.
The all-female music festival dates in Nashville and Phoenix have been scrapped just days before the touring event begins in Calgary, Canada (27 Jun10).
The apparent failure of the festival has prompted some acts to back out of planned sets - Norah Jones, who was scheduled to play five shows in A ugust, will no longer be performing, according to Canada’s Globe and Mail newspaper, and the Go-Go’s were forced to scrap their Lillith Fair shows when guitarist Jane Wiedlin was injured while hiking.
Meanwhile, three of the Canadian tour stops have been moved to smaller venues.
Festival co-founder Terry McBride says, "We’re in the middle of a reces sion. The interesting thing is we’re stronger than most, but tickets are soft. Stateside has definitely been hurt a lot more. Canada, I think, has been affected by the recession, America has been slammed by it." The festival features co-founder Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow, Rihanna, Ke$ha, Selena Gomez, Mary J. Blige and Kelly Clarkson.

The singer is aiming for the world record for the highest-ever live gig ..
Blunt will perform for 150 competition winners on board a Boeing 757 on Tuesday (29Jun10), as part of a event organised by UK radio station Hear t FM.

RADIOHEAD DUO SURPRISE WITH GLASTONBURY PERFORMANCE

RADIOHEAD stars JONNY GREENWOOD and THOM YORKE served up the first big su rprise at this year’s (10) Glastonbury festival when they hit the stage f or an unannounced set.
The bandmates were introduced by festival organiser Michael Eavis, who built up the moment by calling it "the biggest surprise of the weekend." A grinning Yorke then stepped forward and announced, "Hi, my name is Th omas Yorke," before playing his The Eraser hit solo on the piano.
He went on to perform Harrowdown Hill and Black Swan before Greenwood j oined him onstage for a rendition of Cymbal Rush, Wishes Fishes/Arpeggi a nd Pyramid Song.
They closed their short set with Radiohead fan favourites Karma Police and Street Spirit (Fade Out) and then Yorke told fans to "have a brillian t festival" as he shuffled offstage.

The world can’t get enough of MICHAEL JACKSON - the King of Pop’s memorab ilia has gone under the hammer in Las Vegas for extraordinary prices.
The big sale of clothing, documents and furniture has only just started - and already experts at Julien’s Auctions have been left staggered by t he prices items are fetching.
A custom-made jacket, which was expected to go under the hammer at $8,0 00 (GBP5,300), went for a staggering $120,000 (GBP80,000), while an autog raph the late pop superstar gave to a fan the day before he died sold for $21,000 (GBP14,000) - 26 times more than its estimate.
Also among the early highlights, Jackson’s MTV Moonman award for the vi deo of Scream, which went under the hammer for $43,750 (GBP29,170) - more than six times its estimate - and the King of Pop’s signed white fedora hat, which was expected to fetch $3,000 (GBP2,000). That sold for a whopp ing $56,250 (GBP37,500).

UNION’S BASKETBALL STAR BOYFRIEND FINALISES DIVORCE

GABRIELLE UNION’s basketball star boyfriend DWAYNE WADE is free to wed th e actress after finalising his divorce from his estranged wife.
Miami Heat player Wade, who is currently dating the Bring It On star, h as been embroiled in divorce proceedings with Siohvaughn Wade, the mother of his two children, since 2007.
Union was dragged into the feud earlier this year (05May10), when Siohv aughn filed suit against Wade, accusing him of engaging in "sexual forepl ay" with the actress in front of their two sons, aged eight and two.
The proceedings hit the headlines again when Wade’s wife was jailed day s later after missing a scheduled divorce hearing in Chicago, Illinois - which landed the sportsman with temporary custody of the children.
But now the parties can move on - the eight-year marriage was officiall y dissolved by a Chicago judge on Friday morning (25Jun10).
The pair will still have to work out details including custody of the t wo children and division of marital assets.

JACKSON EMERGES AS HOBBIT FAVOURITE
