The Milk star has been instrumental in ensuring many of the devastated nation’s people receive aid following the tremor which killed hundreds of thousands of citizens in January (10).
And he missed the unveiling of his new movie Fair Game at the Cannes Fi lm Festival in France on Thursday (20May10) to testify at a U.S. Senate c ommittee about the problems in the country.
During the meeting on Wednesday (19May10), Penn insisted healthcare in Haiti needs "immediate attention" as several hospital have been closed do wn - and he fears the nation will be overrun with emergencies once hurric ane season begins.
He adds, "In many cases, the bureaucracy of international aid is protec ting people to death. I come here today in the hope that we will address with bold clarity the razor’s edge upon which Haiti lies."

The rock star tells MTV, "In my entire life I’ve never wanted a song fu lly rendered, that someone else has written - ever… It (song) was 11 ye ars old at the time… and she ended up giving it to Christina Aguilera, but I begged her for it.
"She said to me at the time… ‘You’re not ready for top 40; you will b e. You’ll hate this song because you didn’t write it’ - which is totally true… and then we got into a fierce fight about whether she should give it to Britney (Spears) or Christina.
"She said, ‘Someday, you and me are gonna write a song that’s better an d better suited for you.’" Perry lived up to her promise when she offered Love Letter To God for L ove’s new Hole album Nobody’s Daughter.

Country star CHELY WRIGHT was so desperate to hide her homosexuality when she first started working in the record industry she’d attack gay stars.
The Single White Female singer recently ‘came out’ as a lesbian in her memoir Like Me, and now admits she was so terrified that homosexuals woul d realise she was one of them, she publicly shunned and berated them.
In a candid interview on U.S. TV show Oprah on Wednesday (19May10), Wri ght revealed, "When I first moved to Nashville, I worked at Opryland - th e themepark - and there are a lot of gay boys running around at those the meparks.
"I was afraid there was some identifiable factor in me that they could pick up on, that they might know that I was gay." And her fears came to a head one day when she was hanging out with a fe llow performer.
She recalls, "Another gay boy walked up behind him and just playfully s macked him on the butt and Ray said, ‘I know you want me,’ and I said, ‘I wish you’d keep that out of my face, it’s a sin.’ I couldn’t believe thi s was coming out of my face." SIMON COWELL is wary of having children with his fiancee MEZHGAN HUSSAINY because he would feel too old to play with them.

MINDY MCCREADY is hoping to be reunited with her four-year-old son after a judge agreed on Wednesday (19May10) to reopen custody proceedings.
The troubled country star lost custody of Zander in 2007 after she was jailed for violating probation by allegedly assaulting her mum, Gayle, in a fight over the singer’s drinking and drug addictions.
McCready has since conquered her demons thanks in part to a stint on U.
S. show Celebrity Rehab last year (09) and successfully underwent drug te sting and a psychological evaluation to prove she’s a competent parent.
Judge James Seals approved supervised meetings between McCready and Zan der at a hearing in Fort Myers, Florida on Wednesday - and McCready is pl anning to do whatever it takes to win unsupervised and overnight visits.
But the star’s lawyer James Moon insists McCready will have to smooth o ut her troubled relationship with her mum in a bid to win alone-time.
He tells E! Online, "She was disappointed because she didn’t get unsupe rvised visits but I think she was particularly upbeat that her case was r eopened. She knows what she needs to do and she’s been doing it for some time now. It’s a positive step.
"One of the difficulties we have is that visits are subject to the appr oval of the guardian of Zander. And there are some issues between (McCrea dy) and her mother, as I’m sure you’re aware, and today in court we made a very strong effort to let everyone know that Mindy’s moved past those i ssues and is saying, ‘Here’s an olive branch, work with me.’ She’s saying , ‘Let me see him as much as I can, and let’s work things out between us.
‘" The singer adds, "We have progressed in a manner to reunite me and my s on, Zander. I feel very optimistic this will happen in the near future."

JOE JONAS has announced plans to release a solo album away from THE JONAS BROTHERS.
The 20 year old shot to fame as the lead singer of the Disney sibling t rio but now he’s ready to branch out by recording his own material.
He tells Just Jared, "There’s nothing to hide. We’re just waiting for t he right timing. There’s a lot of Jonas stuff going on this year, so once there’s a place for that record, we’ll release it. You’ll hear a lot of new music from us." The youngest member of the band, Nick, was the first to launch a separa te side project when he formed Nick Jonas and The Administration last yea r (09).

OZZY OSBOURNE sent encouragement to RONNIE JAMES DIO immediately after le arning of his cancer battle - because it reminded him of the moment his w ife SHARON was diagnosed with the disease.
Osbourne, who Dio replaced in Black Sabbath in 1979, admits he was sad after learning the rocker had stomach cancer as the ordeal brought back m emories of his wife’s own struggle with colon cancer in 2002.
He says, "As soon as I heard he had been diagnosed with cancer, I sent him some encouragement. Having been through that situation myself with Sh aron when we were doing (reality TV show) The Osbournes, it’s always some body over there (distant).
"When it lands at your doorstep you’re like, ‘What do you do? How do yo u get round this?’ When Sharon got cancer, I’d never known anyone who sur vived. I thought it was bulls**t when they told you, ‘They can survive.’ I just thought they were trying to smooth me over. And she got over it." Sharon was ultimately given the all-clear, but the heavy metal legend s uccumbed to cancer on Sunday (16May10) - and Osbourne is hopeful Dio rece ived his well wishes before passing.
He adds, "I didn’t get a chance to see him but I was talking to the dru mmer Vinny (Appice), and I said, ‘Did he get my message?’ ‘I don’t know,’ he said. And I said, ‘Well, tell him to keep up the fight.’ Then on the weekend, we heard he had passed away, which is sad. He had a great voice.

Cops in the U.S. have reportedly launched an investigation into allegatio ns HOWARD K. STERN threatened a potential witness in the ANNA NICOLE SMIT H drugs trial.
Stern, Smith’s former attorney, is accused along with medics Dr. Sandee p Kapoor and Dr. Khristine Eroshevich of conspiring to supply the late ac tress/model with prescription pills, resulting in her death in 2007. They are awaiting trial on a total of 23 felony charges.
Now police in South Carolina have launched a probe after a possible wit ness in the case, Mark Hatten - one of Smith’s ex-lovers - alleged he rec eived a threatening message from Stern on social networking website MySpa ce, according to TMZ.com.
In a police report obtained by the website, Hatten claims he received a personal message on May 3 (10), reading: "You are in over your head. You are being watched. Keep a look out before everything comes crashing down , do you understand me?" The message was sent from a MySpace account in the name of "HowardKevin Stern", and cops in Greeleyville have launched an investigation into "int imidation of a witness/harassment via internet".
But Stern has flatly denied having anything to do with the message, tel ling TMZ: "Don’t you have to have a MySpace account in order to leave a m essage? I wouldn’t even know how to leave a message on MySpace." (ZN/WNWC

SEX AND THE CITY star CYNTHIA NIXON is appalled by the Newsweek magazine article condemning gay actors for playing straight roles, insisting the c ontroversial piece was "really cruel".
Columnist Ramin Setoodeh singled out Glee star Jonathan Groff and Sean Hayes, who is currently appearing on Broadway in Promises, Promises, crit icising the pair for portraying straight men.
But Nixon, who is engaged to her longterm partner Christine Marinoni, a rgues that gay performers should be able to play any role - and blames Se toodeh for setting back equal rights.

KEVIN COSTNER’s dreams of saving the Louisiana coastline from a mass oil spillage have moved a step closer - BP bosses have agreed to test out his water-oil separation device.
The Bodyguard star jetted into the region last week (13May10) with his scientist brother Dan after an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico ruptured, se nding a huge slick drifting towards the state’s shores.
The brothers run Costner Industries Nevada Corporation (CINC), and have previously promoted a filtration system, designed by Dan Costner, to rec ycle oil.
Now BP Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles has agreed to test out six of the devices on the oil spill this week (beg17May10).
At a news conference last week (end16May10), Costner said, "Years befor e I got involved, oil spills were coming and I was wondering why we could n’t clean this up. This is why it was developed… I’m just really happy that the light of day has come to this."

JAMES CAMERON is facing a lawsuit from an author who alleges the filmmake r stole his idea for blockbuster movie AVATAR.
Writer Kelly Van alleges Cameron based the movie, which became the worl d’s highest-grossing film earlier this year (10), on his online book Shei la the Warrior: The Damned? Cameron insists he’s never seen the story, but Van has filed papers all eging both the director and movie studio 20th Century Fox plagiarised his plotline and character details.
Van claims the "demeanour", "attire", "motions" and "powers/rituals" of the Na’vi characters, as well as the "settings" and "scenes" are based e ntirely on her work.
But a spokesperson for Fox, Chris Petrikin, has slammed the lawsuit, sa ying in a statement, "It’s absolutely baseless. Jim Cameron’s treatment f or Avatar was written before Ms. Van alleges she even started to write he r book." Cameron reportedly completed Avatar’s script in 1998, but Van’s attorne y Kevin Mirch insists: "We did a lot of research, and the copyright says Avatar was copyrighted on April 1 of 2007. The date of (Van’s) creation w as in 2000, and it was published on the Internet in 2003. Avatar was done much later.
"It’s just contrary to what they said to us - which they did in a very rude manner. (Cameron’s) lawyer wrote us a letter saying they would go af ter our law firm and our client if it wasn’t dismissed immediately. To ha ve letters that say they’re going to sue us and they’re going to bankrupt us is bad business." In March (10), a court in China dismissed a lawsuit from writer Zhou Sh aomou, who claimed Cameron had copied the plot from his 1997 novel, The L egend of the Blue Crow.
