ZETA-JONES WINS DRAMA DESK TOP HONOURS
CATHERINE ZETA-JONES was recognised for her stint on Broadway in A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC as she accepted top honours at the Drama Desk Awards in New York on Sunday (23May10).
The actress shared her Best Actress in a Musical title with Memphis sta r Montego Glover at the Drama Desk ceremony, which celebrates both Broadw ay and off-Broadway productions.
The accolade was a boost for Zeta-Jones, who was forced to cancel two p erformances of the show last week (19May10) after falling ill.
New production Memphis was a big winner, landing trophies for Best Musi cal and Best Orchestration, while the show’s writer Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan scooped the Best Music prize.
Actor Liev Schreiber was named Best Actor in a Play for his role in Art hur Miller’s A View From the Bridge, while drama Red was cited as Best Pl ay, according to the Associated Press.
One of the evening’s most poignant moments came when organiser Robert R .. Blume paid tribute to actress Lynn Redgrave, who died earlier this mont h (02May10).
He told the audience, "It’s been a sad moment for the New York theatre world and the Drama Desk. She was a close personal friend and a strong su pporter of theatre and the Drama Desk, one of the great ladies of the the atre."
