THE SIMPSONS’ dumb dad HOMER SIMPSON has topped a new list of the best TV and movie character of the last 20 years.
The yellow cartoon character with a love of doughnuts beat out boy wiza rd Harry Potter and Sarah Michelle Gellar’s TV vampire slayer Buffy to ta ke the top spot on the new Entertainment Weekly magazine countdown.
Tony Soprano and Batman villain The Joker round out the top five, while Jennifer Aniston’s Friends character Rachel Green, Johnny Depp’s Edward Scissorhands, Hannibal Lecter, Carrie Bradshaw and Spongebob Squarepants made the top 10.

LOHAN FACES NIGHTLY CHECKS WITH PROBATION OFFICER

LINDSAY LOHAN must check in nightly with her probation officer to find ou t if she’s required to undergo a drug test the following day.
The Mean Girls star was ordered to abstain from alcohol and illegal sub stances for the foreseeable future, wear a drug and alcohol-detecting dev ice and submit to random drug tests following a probation hearing on Mond ay (24May10).
Judge Marsha Revel also insisted Lohan stay in Los Angeles after the ac tress missed a mandatory court appearance last week (20May10) because she was stranded in Europe without a passport. The probation stems from a 20 07 arrest for driving under the influence (DUI).
The actress and her lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, met with her new prob ation officer on Thursday (27May10) to provide evidence of the prescripti on drugs doctors have given her to take to ensure they don’t set off the SCRAM bracelet fitted to her ankle.
During the meeting, Lohan was also told she had to call in to her proba tion officer every night to determine whether she has to be tested for dr ugs, reports TMZ.com.
If she fails to meet the sober conditions of her bail, Lohan faces jail ..

HILL STILL RED-FACED ABOUT AFFLECK TOILET ENCOUNTER

Funnyman JONAH HILL once mistook CASEY AFFLECK for a drunken pal in a hot el restroom - and made the actor pee all over himself.
The Superbad star was partying at Hollywood’s Roosevelt Hotel years ago when he decided to play a trick on his friend Schmidt when he spotted hi m at a urinal during a trip to the toilet.
He says, "We used to play this game called earthquake, which is where y ou violently shake whoever is peeing at the urinal and scream out ‘earthq uake’ as loud as you can.
"So Schmidt’s peeing there and I’m really drunk and I grabbed his shoul ders… and I’m screaming, ‘Earthquake, earthquake,’ and pee is flying al l over him and everything.
"Then, all of a sudden I just hear, ‘What?’ and he turned around, and i t’s not Schmidt, it’s Casey Affleck… (He was) not even bummed out, just kind of perplexed… He just goes, ‘Why did you do that?’ "I’m, like, 18 and super drunk and I’m just kinda like, ‘I thought you were my friend Schmidt…’ He was like, ‘Why would you do that to your fr iend?’" The restroom encounter gave Hill a new-found respect for the actor: "He ’s the nicest man of all time because he was well within his moral rights to beat the crap outta me.
"I’ve met him since then and I was like, ‘Honestly, you owe me a punch in the face if you ever want to just throw me a left hook… and I won’t be upset."

DEWITT GETS PROBATION FOR DRINK DRIVING

Actress JOYCE DEWITT has been handed three years of probation as part of a plea deal related to her 2009 drink driving arrest in Los Angeles.
The former Three’s Company star has also been fined $510 (=C2=A3340) an d ordered to attend a nine-month alcohol-treatment program.
DeWitt pleaded no contest to two misdemeanour counts of driving drunk a nd driving while having a 0.08 per cent or higher blood alcohol level.
The 61-year-old sitcom star was arrested in July (09).

RADCLIFFE FEARS POTTER WILL BE BACK - IN 30 YEARS

HARRY POTTER star DANIEL RADCLIFFE fears he won’t be the last kid to play the boy wizard - he has a sneaking suspicion the franchise will be re-im agined for a new generation when he’s in his 50s.
The young Brit worries that movie executives won’t be able to resist re making the Potter films as J.K. Rowling’s hit books continue to top bests eller lists around the world.
He tells Entertainment Weekly magazine, "The books will be around for d ecades to come which makes me wonder if, in 30 years time, we will be see ing remakes of all these movies.
"I have a very dark suspicion that that will happen, although I don=E2=80 =99t particularly want it to."

COLEMAN HOSPITALISED AFTER FALL

Former child star GARY COLEMAN has been hospitalised in Utah after injuri ng his head in a fall.
The former Diff’rent Strokes actor, 42, was admitted to a medical facil ity on Wednesday (27May10) and underwent surgery after an accident at hom e.
Coleman’s brother-in-law has confirmed to TMZ.com that the star is reco vering from the operation in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
Further details were unavailable as WENN went to press and the star’s a gent, Robert Malcolm, had yet to respond to requests for a comment.
Coleman, who suffers from a congenital kidney disease which requires fr equent dialysis, has faced a string of health problems in recent months - he was hospitalised in January and again in February (10) after sufferin g apparent seizures.

STING RULES OUT DUETS WITH KIDS

Veteran rocker STING has ruled out collaborating with his singing offspri ng COCO and JOE - because he’s convinced he’d just "mess up" their style.
The Roxanne hitmaker’s 19-year-old daughter fronts her own band, I Blam e Coco, while Joe, 33, is the lead singer of Fiction Plane.
Sting admits he can spot star potential in his kids, but he’s hesitant at the thought of teaming up with them in the studio.
He tells People magazine, "I have two musicians and I recognise the DNA .. But you don’t want some old guy messing up your vibe."

ARMSTRONG PROUD OF SON’S PUNK BAND

BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG is bonding with his teenage son over their shared lo ve of music after the youngster signed up to play in a punk rock group.
The Green Day rocker’s son Joey now plays drums in the band Emily’s Arm y and Armstrong is relishing in passing on his wisdom.
He tells Kerrang! magazine, "Joey and I get along great. In fact, he’s in a punk rock band right now. It’s really fun to watch them because they do things in such a DIY (do it yourself) way. So I can talk to him about that kind of stuff and he’s fascinated with the whole Do It Yourself pun k rock scene. He loves going to record stores and hanging with the other punk kids at his school." But Armstrong is careful not to reveal all about the rock ‘n’ roll life style to the teen, because he wants him to learn from his own experiences ..
He says, "It’s up to him to have his own adventure with it. I don’t wan t to tell him everything that he can expect; I just want to tell him enou gh where he can be prepared. It’s just important that the life he leads i s his own and that the experiences he collects are his own too." (PAW/WNW

D12′S MCVAY FACES TAX DEMAND

D12 rapper SWIFTY MCVAY has reportedly joined the list of celebrity tax d elinquents - he owes the U.S. government more than $254,000 (=C2=A3169,33 5) in unpaid fees.
The hip-hop star, real name Ondre Moore, had a tax lien filed against h im in Los Angeles in March (10), according to reports - and Internal Reve nue Service (IRS) officials filed another complaint against Moore and his wife weeks later.
The couple is also facing a demand of $7,199 (=C2=A34,799) in unpaid ta xes in the state of Michigan, dating back to November (09).
But Moore’s lawyer, Jeffrey Freeman, insists the Purple Hills hitmaker is working on resolving his financial problems.
He tells the Detroit News, "Mr. Moore takes full responsibility for his debt to the IRS and the state and is working with the government in reso lving his outstanding tax liability.
"He has rejoined with his prior manager, and his current business and t ax matters are now being properly handled." Moore isn’t the only D12 member hit with IRS demands - bandmates Kuniva and Kon Artis have also been slapped with tax demands.

NELSON CUTS OFF TRADEMARK LONG LOCKS

Country music legend WILLIE NELSON has shocked fans by cutting off his tr ademark long locks in favour of a new shoulder-length hairstyle.
The singer is famous for his waist-length tresses and recently revealed he had backed out of taking a pair of scissors to his hair on a number o f occasions.
He said, "Well I’ve threatened to (cut his hair) several times but I’ve always chickened out." But the 77 year old has finally taken the plunge and chopped off his lo cks - unveiling his new look at a concert in Maui, Hawaii last weekend (2 2May10), when he performed with his son Micah’s band, The Reflectacles.
Nelson’s representative, Elaine Schock, reveals the star had grown tire d of taking care of his hair, admitting, "There’s a lot of maintenance."

ALBARN WANTS REED TO JOIN GORILLAZ AT GLASTONBURY

DAMON ALBARN wants to recruit VELVET UNDERGROUND rocker LOU REED to join him on the Glastonbury stage this summer (10).
The Blur frontman is set to headline the famed U.K. festival with his b and Gorillaz after U2 pulled out of the slot due to singer Bono’s back su rgery.
He’s hoping to pull off his most impressive Gorillaz set to date - by d rafting in some of the artists who appeared on their latest album, includ ing Reed, to sing at Glastonbury.
Albarn says, "I just hope we can convince Lou Reed and he grasps that i t’s a real privilege to get the chance to do it. Then we’d have a complet e house and that really would be amazing." Gorillaz’s Plastic Beach, released in March (10), also features appeara nces from rappers Snoop Dogg, Kano and Mos Def, Super Furry Animals front man Gruff Rhys, soul legend Bobby Womack, and The Clash rocker Mick Jones ..
Albarn admits he’s prepared for the experience to be completely differe nt to his appearance at Glastonbury last year (09), where he headlined wi th the reformed Blur.
He adds, "I’m not thinking for one second that I can compete with that kind of thing (a Blur set). This is something very separate and I wouldn’ t try to compare the two at all.
"Obviously it’s a great shame for U2 that they can’t do that. I know th at they were really looking forward to playing that gig. They’ve never do ne Glastonbury.
"It’s magic, Glastonbury. It’s definitely magic in so many ways… I wa s surprised and a bit nervous (to be asked). I appreciate that it’s a big deal but I think we can pull it off."

CATTRALL WANTED TO TRICK FANS WITH SEX PREGNANCY

KIM CATTRALL wanted to fool fans into thinking her SEX AND THE CITY man-e ater SAMANTHA JONES was pregnant as cast and crew came up with ideas to k eep the movie sequel’s real storyline a top secret.
Cattrall made headlines last year (09) when she was snapped holding a c opy of her lines, which revealed part of the script, so writer/director M ichael Patrick King came up with a plan to trick the paparazzi and fans b y shooting a series of fake scenes.
Cattrall reveals she had some big ideas for her sex-crazed character, b ut her suggestions were rebuffed by King in favour of a more convincing s toryline.
She says, "We were shooting on the street and the first day it was the four of us back together again and the paparazzi were everywhere. We had to be so careful with plot lines.
"One day I went to the set with my script in my hand, and some paparazz i blew up the script and gave away the storyline, so I said to Michael Pa trick King, ‘They’re gonna ruin it for the fans!’ He said, ‘I think we should play a little trick on them.’ "I said, ‘OK, what are we gonna do? What about pregnancy, they’ll freak out if Samantha is pregnant!’ He said, ‘No, no, no, let’s marry her.’ "So (designer) Patricia Fields went to a bridal shop and bought three w edding dresses. I tried them on and then it was all around the world: ‘Sa mantha’s getting married!’"

HOWARD’S NEW WIFE HELPED HIM THROUGH MOTHER’S DEATH

Actor TERRENCE HOWARD’s new wife is an old friend he reconnected and fell in love with after the death of his beloved mother in 2008.
The Iron Man star, 40, recently let slip he’s a married man after excha nging vows with Michelle Ghent in a small Los Angeles ceremony in January (10).
The news emerged just months after he split from his actress fiancee Zu lay Henao, his co-star in 2009 movie Fighting, and reports suggested his nuptials with Ghent occurred after a whirlwind romance.
But Us Weekly magazine reports Howard has known Ghent for years - and h e grew close to the 33-year-old while he was mourning the passing of his mum Anita.
A source tells the publication, "They met years ago and reconnected ear ly last year. (They) bonded when she consoled him over the loss of his mo ther.
"He feels so lucky." Howard split from his first wife, Lori McCommas, in 2003 and remarried her in 2005.

MURPHY’S HALF-BROTHER ‘NOT SHOCKED’ BY MONJACK’S DEATH

BRITTANY MURPHY’s half-brother is not surprised by the death of the actre ss’ widower SIMON MONJACK, insisting the screenwriter was "insane".
Monjack’s mother-in-law, Sharon Murphy, found him unconscious in the Ho llywood Hills home he once shared with his late wife on Sunday (23May10).
Paramedics determined he had suffered a cardiac arrest and pronounced hi m dead at the scene.
Monjack’s representative, Roger Neal, revealed the overweight Brit was in need of heart bypass surgery when he died.
Officials have since concluded there were "no signs of foul play or any criminal activity involved" in Monjack’s death, although the cause won’t be known until results from toxicology tests are returned.
But the actress’ sibling, Tony Bertolotti, admits he suspected somethin g was wrong in the Monjack/Murphy household prior to his death, although he refuses to go into further details.
He tells the National Enquirer, "I wasn’t shocked to be honest. The guy was insane." Clueless star Murphy, Sharon’s daughter with Angelo Bertolotti, died at the same Hollywood property in December (09).
Monjack will be buried beside the tragic actress at Forest Lawn Memoria l Park in Los Angeles on Thursday (27May10).

WEINSTEINS FAIL TO WIN BACK MIRAMAX

Movie moguls HARVEY and BOB WEINSTEIN have failed to negotiate a deal wit h bosses at The Walt Disney Company to buy back the production company th ey founded in 1979.
Miramax Studios was snapped up by The Walt Disney Company in 1993 after the company became a leading distributor of independent films, and the W einstein brothers left the firm for good in 2005 to set up The Weinstein Company.
Miramax subsequently fell into financial difficulty and its New York an d Los Angeles offices closed for good in January (10).
Eighty employees were made redundant and six films were shelved in the studio’s vaults, awaiting distribution.
The Weinsteins, who were responsible for hit films such as Reservoir Do gs, Pulp Fiction and The English Patient, entered talks to take back Mira max earlier this year (10) but discussions broke down this week (begs24Ma y10), according to The Wall Street Journal.

SCORSESE & SNIPES’ FINANCIAL ADVISER ARRESTED FOR FRAUD

A high-profile investment banker to stars including MARTIN SCORSESE, WESL EY SNIPES and UMA THURMAN has been arrested on suspicion of defrauding hi s clients, allegedly cheating them out of a staggering $30 million (=C2=A3 20 million).
Kenneth Starr was busted by New York authorities on Thursday (27May10) and charged with wire fraud, investment adviser fraud and money launderin g, amid claims he used the celebrities’ cash to buy a luxurious Manhattan apartment.
According to the legal complaint filed by Internal Revenue Service (IRS ) investigators, the 65 year old CEO of Starr and Co. and Starr Investmen t Advisors LLC., is accused of "defrauding his clients by engaging in at least two types of schemes".
Starr, who also advised financially-strapped photographer Annie Leibovi tz, allegedly used the personal bank accounts of his clients to make unau thorised transfers to himself and close associates. Another plot reported ly saw him solicit investments and syphon off the money to other accounts for his own use.
Former New York City Council President Andrew Stein was also arrested i n connection to the fraud scheme. He was charged with making false statem ents in documents filed with the IRS and making false statements to a fed eral officer.
A press conference detailing the charges is scheduled to be held later on Thursday (27May10).
Starr’s scandal comes a year after conman Bernie Madoff was jailed for 150 years after pleading guilty to stealing billions of dollars from his wealthy clients, including Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, John Malkovich, and Zsa Zsa Gabor.

STING CONFIRMS PLANS FOR BROADWAY

Rocker STING is returning to Broadway - he’s working on a musical for the New York stage.
The former The Police frontman, 58, has confirmed rumours he’s teamed u p with Tony Award-winning songwriter Brian Yorkie to pen his first Broadw ay project, but admits the final product is still a while away because th ey’ve yet to settle on one idea.
He tells People magazine, "We’re in the very early stages of thinking a bout what a show could be like. I’m working with Brian Yorkie." Sting is no stranger to the Broadway stage - he starred in a production of 3 Penny Opera in the late 1980s.

FILIPINO TEEN STAR DENIES GLEE ROLE

Filipino singing sensation CHARICE has dismissed reports she’s joining th e cast of GLEE - but she’d love to be considered for a role on the hit sh ow.
The teenager, who was discovered by media mogul Oprah Winfrey, was said to have been offered a regular part on the upcoming second season of the musical series.
But the 18 year old has denied the rumours, taking to her Twitter.com p age to tell fans, "No. I’m not going to be on Glee. How I wish… Maybe m y handler (agent) is confused." The star found chart success in America after a fan posted one of Chari ce’s performances online - sparking the interest of talk show queen Winfr ey.
