The forward-thinking Avatar director has been called on as a consultant by the technical experts building a high-resolution 3D camera for use on trips to the planet.
The gadget will be mounted atop the next rover mission to Mars, which i s set for launch in 2011.

LINDSAY LOHAN’s father has won the support of actress and TV personality ROSIE O’DONNELL in his bid to force the MEAN GIRLS star into rehab - she’ s positive the 23 year old needs help.
The A League of Their Own star admits she feels close to Michael Lohan’ s daughter - because she sees herself in the actress’ mother, Dina.
She tells U.S. TV news show Access Hollywood, "Lindsay Lohan’s mother g rew up one town over from where I did. I’m the same age as her mother… There’s like five people who are famous from the area we grew up and she’ s one of them, and it makes me very sad.
"I look at Lindsay Lohan and think, ‘That could be my child’ - literall y. All I wanna do is help her and save her and I wonder why her mother do es not." O’Donnell agrees with Lohan’s concerned father, who is seeking legal ai d in his bid to force his daughter to get help for an alleged prescriptio n medication addiction.
She adds, "Lindsay Lohan needs a severe intervention." And the actress admits she would call on TV counsellor to the stars Dr.
Drew Pinsky to help her help the 23 year old.
O’Donnell adds, "I would take Dr. Drew Pinsky and Lindsay Lohan and hop efully get us in a room for a couple of hours, and then I would take her off to rehab and force her to stay there. In a candid new interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the actor opens up about the two weeks in 1996 that eventually led to him getting help an d getting clean.

"There I am, in my own kitchen, cooking up some rock - no Vicodin, no V alium, nothing to take the edge off, barely a trace of f**king Absolut Ci tron (vodka) in the fridge, and I just go, ‘This is as good as it gets ri ght now.’" Downey, Jr. quickly realised that moment was as low as he ever wanted t o go: "The only way out of that hopeless state is intervention." KID ROCK has signed up to host the 2010 CMT Music Awards in Nashville, Te nnessee on 9 June (10).
The rocker has often made appearances at the country music prizegiving, but this is the first year he has been invited to take charge of the eve nt.
A statement from Rock reads, "All I can promise is I will be awesome." The singer/songwriter, who claimed the CMT Video of the Year award for All Summer Long last year (09), made the announcement on his official web site on Thursday (29Apr10).
The 2010 CMT Music Awards will air live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Ar ena. Toby Keith, Lady Antebellum and Carrie Underwood are among the early performers confirmed.

Rapper B.O.B. has scored a second week at number one in the U.S. pop char ts as his follow-up track lands in the top 10.
Nothin’ on You keeps Rihanna’s Rude Boy from returning to the top of th e Billboard Hot 100, while his Airplanes collaboration with Paramore’s Ha yley Williams enters the top 10 at nine.

METALLICA’s MASTER OF PUPPETS has topped a new list of heavy metal albums ..
The group’s 1986 release beat Iron Maiden’s Number of the Beast and App etite For Destruction by Guns N’ Roses on the joint MusicRadar.com and Me tal Hammer magazine poll.
Ironically, the results have been released on International Noise Aware ness Day.
More than 6,000 heavy rock fans took part in the vote, with 20 per cent of them picking Master of Puppets as the top album.
Also making the top 10 were Metallica’s Ride The Lightning, AC/DC’s Bac k in Black, Rust in Peace by Megadeth and Black Sabbath’s Paranoid.
Metallica and Iron Maiden made the top 10 twice and seven of the top 10 albums were released in the 1980s.

Blind opera star ANDREA BOCELLI and rocker BRYAN ADAMS are to team up to close the upcoming World Cup in South Africa.
The Italian tenor and the Canadian will perform at the Celebrate Africa , the Grand Finale spectacular in Johannesburg on 9 July (10), two days b efore the World Cup final takes place.
South African soprano Pretty Yende will join the two stars onstage.

ROMAN POLANSKI’s lawyers have asked a U.S. judge to unseal secret testimo ny by the original prosecutor in the director’s 33-year-old sex case - in a bid to help Swiss authorities rule on his extradition case.
The Rosemary’s Baby director has been confined to his Swiss chalet sinc e December (09), following his September (09) arrest in Zurich, 32 years after he fled America and skipped sentencing on a child-sex charge.
Lawmakers in an appeals court in Los Angles ruled last week (23Apr10) t hat the Oscar winner cannot be sentenced in absentia and must now return to California to receive his punishment after pleading guilty to having u nlawful sex with 13-year-old Samantha Geimer at a party in 1977.
And on Thursday (29Apr10), the star’s lawyers, Chad Hummel and Bart Dal ton, requested permission to submit the testimony of retired Deputy Distr ict Attorney Roger Gunson to Swiss authorities.
Gunson testified earlier this year (09) in a conditional examination bu t L.A.’s Superior Court Judge Peter Espinoza kept the transcripts sealed.
Polanski’s attorneys claim the transcripts will prove that the extradit ion request is based on false and incomplete statements by officials at t he Los Angeles District Attorney’s office.

BILL MURRAY is considering writing his own second GHOSTBUSTERS sequel - j ust to shut everyone up.
The Lost In Translation star admits he’s tiring of questions about Ghos tbusters 3, insisting there is no script for the movie - just the hope of movie executives who want to revisit the spooky film franchise and revam p it for a new generation.
And Murray, who played Dr. Peter Venkman in the 1984 original and its 1 989 sequel, is now considering writing himself out of the film - just so he’s never asked about making another Ghostbusters.
He tells WENN, "It’s getting so annoying I might just write the damn th ing because everyone is driving me nuts. But then they’ll want Ghostbuste rs IV and I won’t be in that.
"I don’t know who started this. It was an imaginary thing that there we re gonna be some new writers that were gonna write it. Honestly it’s just the studio who wants the movie to be made. It’s a franchise; it’s like t he new Barbie. We did a great one and then we did another one. A third wo uld have to be pretty darn good.

BRAD PITT is holding up plans to bring a gripping piece of American folkl ore to the big screen and movie great ROBERT DUVALL is urging him to prio ritise the project.
Duvall hopes to reteam with his Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper for a movie retelling of the famous feud between Virginia families the Hatfiel ds and the McCoys, but they can’t get started on the film until Pitt sche dules it.
The Godfather star reveals Cooper and Pitt met in Venice, Italy to disc uss the film and top scriptwriter Eric Roth’s screenplay - and now everyt hing hinges on the Babel star’s commitment to play opposite Duvall in the period piece.
The film chronicles the battles between the two neighbouring pioneer fa milies who fought on opposite sides of the American Civil War and long af ter the Union and Confederate armies stopped fighting.
One of their most famous battles was over the ownership of a pig.
And Duvall, who turns 80 in January (11), wants to make the epic before he’s too old to take on a leading part.
He tells WENN, "Scott’s on board and (Crazy Heart composer) T-Bone Burn ett would do the music. It’s like American Shakespeare; the two families fighting 30 years over a pig! "Their lineage goes back to England and the music and the songs and eve n some of their feuding goes back that far. Eric Roth wrote this brillian t script and he wrote backwards through books. It’s brilliant and it shou ld be done.
"The role of Devil Anse, the head of the Hatfields, was written for me and Brad would be the main guy in it. He loves the script but he has so m any options that he’s putting it off. Hopefully they’ll do it but it’s al l up to Brad Pitt to release it. He controls the project with Warner Brot hers."
