LAWYER: ‘COURTS WANT TO SHAME POLANSKI’
ROMAN POLANSKI’s lawyer is convinced U.S. court officials want to make an example of the shamed filmmaker - because there is "no reason" why he sh ould be extradited to America.
The Rosemary’s Baby director has been confined to his Swiss chalet sinc e December (09) following his September (09) arrest in Zurich - more than 30 years after he fled America and skipped sentencing on a child-sex cha rge.
An appeals court in Los Angles ruled last week (23Apr10) that the Oscar winner cannot be sentenced in absentia and must now return to California to receive his punishment after pleading guilty to having unlawful sex w ith 13-year-old Samantha Geimer at a party in 1977.
And his attorney believes prosecutors are determined to see the directo r on American soil after he fled the country for France in 1978, accordin g to Reuters.
Herve Temime tells Europe 1 radio, "One gets the feeling that there’s t he desire to see him arrive in shackles, when there’s no reason why Roman Polanski should be extradited, none at all." A California appeals court last week also denied Geimer’s petition to h ave the case dismissed.
