GURU’S FAMILY CONFIRMS COMA
The family of late GANG STARR rapper GURU have confirmed the star never w oke up from the coma he fell into earlier this year (10).
The hip-hop legend was admitted to a New York medical facility in Febru ary (10) after he suffered a heart attack and lost consciousness.
It was later revealed Guru, real name Keith Elam, was also battling can cer, but chose to keep the news private. He passed away on Monday (19Apr1 0).
A farewell letter, released by Guru’s business partner Solar and believ ed to have been written on his deathbed, sparked speculation about his co ndition in his final months, but his sister Patricia confirms the rapper "never regained consciousness" after his collapse in February.
A statement from the Elam family has been released by Patricia and post ed on DJ Premier’s official blog.
It reads, "Guru suffered from multiple myeloma for over a year. Accrued complications from this illness led to respiratory failure and cardiac a rrest. As a result, Guru was in a coma from mid-February until his death and never regained consciousness. Early on the morning of April 19th, he became hypertensive due to low blood pressure. He again went into cardiac arrest and slipped away from us." The statement adds: "The Elam family wishes to thank the fans of our so n/brother/father/uncle/nephew/cousin Keith, aka Guru, for the outpouring of love, concern and support. Our hearts are broken by the loss of someon e we loved so much. Guru was devoted to his young son, who will most keen ly feel his absence."
