Rap pioneers JERMAINE DUPRI, MASTER P and the 2LIVE CREW will be saluted at the 2010 VH1 Hip Hop Honors for bringing the sounds of the South to th e mainstream music industry.
Organized Noise, J-Prince and Luther ‘Luke’ Campbell will also receive recognition for helping to shape the sound of hip-hop from the Southern s tates of America.
Campbell admits he is pleased the rap industry’s "outcasts" are being a warded the prize, but he insists he wouldn’t be celebrating if it wasn’t for his fans’ tireless campaigning to have his work acknowledged by the c eremony’s organisers.
He says, "I am happy for my fans. They have sent the people that run th e VH1 Hip Hop Honors show emails for years now, asking why a person that started his own record label… can’t get honoured, so I am happy for the m.
"We are the outcasts. On that day, the outcasts will get their five min utes… My fans are the only reason I am doing this." Campbell founded his label Luke Skyywalker Records in 1985, while J-Pri nce’s Rap-A-Lot, Dupri’s So So Def Records and Master P’s No Limit Record s also helped to nurture local talent from the South when they launched i n the mid-1980s and early 1990s.
The VH1 Hip Hop Honours: The Dirty South will take place at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom on 7 June (10).
