Late singer STEPHEN GATELY’s BOYZONE bandmates originally declined to att end a memorial held in his honour - but frontman RONAN KEATING convinced them they had to pay their respects.
The foursome was left devastated when Gately died suddenly in Majorca, Spain in October (09).
Keating and his bandmates Mikey Graham, Keith Duffy and Shane Lynch wer e all present at the singer’s funeral in October (09), but didn’t want to attend a memorial in November (09) as they couldn’t cope with more heart ache.
But Keating convinced his pals they had to all go together to honour Ga tely.
In footage shown on a special memorial show on British network ITV2, Du ffy can be seen telling the group before the memorial, "I don’t think I s hould go tonight… I just know I’ve got a lot of emotion flying all over the place." He elaborates, "The memorial was too close to the actual funeral for me , because all the memorial did for me was bring me back to the funeral ag ain and, you know, it was a very upsetting time, it still is a very upset ting time. And you have to try and move forward and deal with it and figu re out how you can function in your life again after something like that happens." But Keating was adamant all four members of Boyzone would have to put o n a brave face and attend the event. He is seen telling the group: "No, w e have to go tonight because we’re going tonight for Steo. We’re going be cause the four of us are going to stand together for Steo… We have to d o this, the four of us… for respect if nothing else." And Lynch was impressed how his friend managed to convince them to face the memorial: "I saw Ronan pull the positive out of a negative (out) of some of us who didn’t want to go. He said, ‘Lads this isn’t about us, it’ s not our gig, we’re not doing it for us… we’re doing it for the suppor t.’"
