POLANSKI’S GHOST WRITER A HIT WITH CRITICS

Embattled director ROMAN POLANSKI has scored a victory with his latest mo= vie THE GHOST WRITER - the film has secured rave reviews following its pr= emiere at the Berlin film festival in Germany.
The political thriller starring Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan premie= red on Friday (12Feb10) and is one of 20 movies up for the prized Golden = Bear award for best picture.
The Oscar-winning filmmaker is currently under house arrest at his Swis= s chalet and did not attend the premiere. He pleaded guilty to a charge o= f unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977 - but he fled the U.S. bef= ore his sentence could be passed. He was held by officials in Zurich last= year (09) and placed under house arrest. Last month (22Jan10), a Los Ang= eles judge ruled he must return to America to face sentencing.
Polanski refused to let his legal woes disrupt the project, and complet= ed post-production on the film while in prison and under house arrest in = Switzerland. And now he is an early frontrunner for the Golden Bear accol= ade - which he also won in 1966 for Cul-de-Sac.
A Times of London critic lauded the film: "With this immensely enjoyabl= e, satisfyingly convoluted thriller he demonstrates exactly why he is sti= ll a force to be reckoned with. From the opening scene it is clear Polans= ki had complete control, whether or not he was behind bars when he finish= ed it." A reviewer from The Hollywood Reporter described the thriller as "slee= k" and "hypnotic," while a critic from British newspaper The Guardian add= s: "This is his most purely enjoyable picture for years, a Hitchcockian n= ightmare with a persistent, stomach-turning sense of disquiet, brought of= f with confidence and dash." The Berlin film festival awards ceremony is scheduled for 20 February (= 10).

MORE LEGAL WOES FOR LEE=20

Comic book legend STAN LEE is facing more legal woes - he’s been hit with= a second lawsuit in two weeks.
Lee - the man behind Spider-Man, Hulk and the X-Men - is currently faci= ng legal action from the shareholders of a company bearing his name, over= film and book profits. The shareholders of Stan Lee Media Inc. (SLMI) fi= led suit at the end of last month (Jan10) claiming Lee signed all his int= erests in the Marvel brand and its characters over to them.
And Lee now has more legal problems to contend with after attorneys fro= m law firm Lavely & Singer filed suit against the star, alleging he’s fai= led to pay them for work since 2007.
The papers, obtained by TMZ.com, read, "Similar to the flawed comic boo= k super-heroes he created, Stan Lee has demonstrated his own flaws by his= failure to honor his agreements." The suit is seeking an unspecified amount.

CELL 211 AND AGORA RULE GOYA AWARDS

Prison thriller CELL 211 and RACHEL WEISZ’s historical drama AGORA were t= he big winners at Spain’s Goya Awards on Sunday night (14Feb10).
Cell 211 scooped a massive eight trophies at the ceremony in Madrid, in= cluding Best Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director for Daniel Monz= on and Best Actor for Luis Tosar.
Agora, which stars Weisz as a female philosophy professor in Roman Egyp= t, picked up seven prizes with nods for Best Special Effects, Wardrobe an= d Best Original Screenplay.
Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire was chosen as best European film.
Penelope Cruz missed out on the Best Actress statuette for her role in = Pedro Almodovar’s film Broken Embraces - the coveted prize went to Spanis= h actress Lola Duenas for Me, Too.
Almodovar - who quit the academy in 2005, citing disagreements with the= voting procedures - received a standing ovation as he made a welcome ret= urn to the Goyas after a five-year absence, with a late appearance at the= ceremony to present the Best Film prize.
And he credited academy president Alex de la Iglesia with facilitating = his return, telling the crowd, "I’m here because you have a very persiste= nt president. He pestered me until two days ago. And I had a lot of excus= es, but he wouldn’t take no for an answer."

BIEL’S SUGAR HIGH ON VALENTINE’S DAY SET

JESSICA BIEL was on a sugar high for days while filming new movie VALENTI= NE’S DAY after she was forced to repeatedly munch on doughnuts and chocol= ates in one indulgent shoot.
The actress is part of a star-studded cast in the new Garry Marshall ro= mantic comedy, which includes Julia Roberts, Jennifer Garner, Jessica Alb= a, Ashton Kutcher and Bradley Cooper.
And one particular day of filming left Biel buzzing around on set.
She says, "We shot both scenes on the same day. So in the morning I ate= about 10 doughnuts; in the afternoon I ate about 18 or 20 chocolates. I = was on a sugar high for days, it was crazy!"

PORN COMPANY OFFERS MAYER A JOB

Bosses at an adult entertainment company have contacted JOHN MAYER to off= er him a job as a writer - after he professed his love of pornography dur= ing his controversial Playboy interview.
The musician has been mired in scandal for the past week following the = publication of his chat with the adult magazine, in which he used the ‘N’= word when talking about his African-American fanbase, and revealed lurid= details about his relationship with ex-girlfriend Jessica Simpson.
Mayer also took the opportunity to confess his love of porn, telling th= e publication, "Pornography? It=E2=80=99s a new synaptic pathway. You wak= e up in the morning, open a thumbnail page, and it leads to a Pandora=E2=80= =99s box of visuals. There have probably been days when I saw 300 vaginas= before I got out of bed. When I watch porn, if it=E2=80=99s not hot enou= gh, I=E2=80=99ll make up backstories in my mind. My biggest dream is to w= rite pornography." And now Vivid Entertainment boss Steven Hirsch has written to Mayer to = offer the star his "dream" job.

RIHANNA TO STAR IN LAST DRAGON REMAKE?

RIHANNA has reportedly landed a raunchy role for her latest movie perform= ance - playing a dominatrix in a remake of kung-fu cult classic THE LAST = DRAGON.
The Umbrella hitmaker is set to appear in a new version of Berry Gordy’= s 1985 martial arts classic, opposite leading man Samuel L. Jackson.
And Rihanna has been been urged by movie bosses to research the kinky r= ole, according to Britain’s Daily Mirror newspaper.
A source tells the publication, "She has landed an incredibly challengi= ng role alongside Samuel L Jackson.
"But it’s not a part for the faint-hearted. She will play a super sexy,= super kinky dominatrix in martial arts flick The Last Dragon.

WILLIAMS PRAISES OASIS ALBUM

ROBBIE WILLIAMS has put his longstanding rivalry with OASIS behind him - = he’s named the band’s (WHAT’S THE STORY) MORNING GLORY? record his favour= ite album of the last 30 years.
The Angels hitmaker enjoyed a short-lived friendship with the Gallagher= brothers in the 1990s, but they later fell out and became embroiled in a= public feud, with guitarist Noel branding him "the fat dancer from Take = That".

OSBOURNE’S EMERGENCY ROOM DASH AFTER FASHION WEEK TRIUMPH

KELLY OSBOURNE spent her Valentine’s Day morning (14Feb10) in hospital af= ter her friend suffered injuries in a freak accident at a New York bar on= Saturday night (13Feb10).
The reality TV star was the main attraction on the runway for Fashion W= eek over the weekend (12-14Feb10), modelling for designer Betsey Johnson = and Naomi Campbell’s Fashion For Relief Haiti show.
The 25 year old went to Big Apple hotspot Boom Boom Room to celebrate w= ith stylist friend Brooke Dulien on Saturday evening, but the night desce= nded into disaster - and ended in the emergency room.
In a series of posts on her Twitter.com page, Osbourne writes, "HAPPY V= ALENTINES DAY everyone!!!!! How about I woke up covered in blood because = a glass door exploded on my friend of the bathroom (sic) of the Boom Boom= Room last night! "We were with a dr (doctor) until 4am in the morning getting her looked= at and bandaged up, it was crazy." But Dulien is recovering well from the accident - and is just grateful = Osbourne was there to help her.
She says, "Thanks for the concern everyone, I got a doctor and a tetanu= s shot. I’m bruised & bloody, but will survive! @misskellyo (Osbourne) sa= ved me. For real."

JOLIE DISCOURAGES HAITI ADOPTIONS

ANGELINA JOLIE has urged prospective parents not to adopt Haitian orphans= following January’s (10) devastating earthquake - because she fears the = disaster could lead to a rise in child trafficking.
The Hollywood actress travelled to the Caribbean country earlier this m= onth (Feb10) in her role as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador and spen= t part of her time visiting injured kids.
Jolie and her partner Brad Pitt share three adopted children; Maddox, e= ight, from Cambodia, Pax, six, from Vietnam, and five-year-old Zahara fro= m Ethiopia - and they were recently rumoured to be considering welcoming = a Haitian child into their family.
The actress dismissed the reports and she’s now urging others not to ru= sh into adoption after seeing news footage from the earthquake-ravaged na= tion.
She says, "An emergency is not the time for new adoptions in any way. C= hild trafficking has been a huge problem for a very long time. Everybody = that means well needs to really take that very seriously.

REFAELI REACHES AGREEMENT IN TAX CASE

LEONARDO DiCAPRIO’s on/off girlfriend BAR REFAELI has settled an ongoing = dispute with tax officials in her native Israel - after the supermodel wa= s accused of owing thousands of dollars in back payments.
Refaeli’s lawyers argued the catwalk beauty should be declared a non-re= sident of Israel because she spends so much time working abroad.
Officials at the Israel Tax Authority claimed the country is still Refa= eli’s home and demanded she settle her payments.
A compromise has now been reached in the ongoing dispute, with Refaeli’= s legal team agreeing for the catwalk beauty to pay 25 per cent of her in= come in tax up until mid-2009. After this point she will receive an incom= e tax exemption if she is abroad for more than 183 days a year, according= to Ynetnews.com.

Superproducer MARK RONSON has teamed up with singer/songwriter SAM SPARRO= and rapper THEOPHILUS LONDON to form a new band.
The Grammy Award-winning producer, who shot to fame after working on Am= y Winehouse’s Back To Black, is set to release his second album, The Busi= ness, later this year (10).

ACTOR COX LANDS UNIVERSITY ROLE

Actor BRIAN COX is heading back to school - he’s been named the next rect= or of the University of Dundee in his native Scotland.
The Braveheart star was picked by students in his home town to take on = the role, which will involve representing pupils’ interests at the instit= ution’s governing body, the university court.
The 63 year old will be formally installed as rector in a ceremony this= spring (10). Cox follows in the footsteps of late actor Sir Peter Ustino= v, who held the position in the late 1970s.

TARANTINO PLANS WESTERN

QUENTIN TARANTINO is eyeing a Western movie project - he wants to tackle = gunslingers and slavery in his next film.
The Kill Bill moviemaker set his last film, Inglourious Basterds, in Ge= rmany in World War II, and he wants to move his next project back to Amer= ica for a "spaghetti Western".
And Tarantino is determined to put his own spin on the genre.
He tells the New York Daily News, "I’d like to do a Western. But rather= than set it in Texas, have it in slavery times. With that subject that e= verybody is afraid to deal with. Let’s shine that light on ourselves.
"You could do a ponderous history lesson of slaves escaping on the Unde= rground Railroad. Or you could make a movie that would be exciting. Do it= as an adventure. A spaghetti Western that takes place during that time. = And I would call it a ‘Southern’."

GOSLING CANCELS GIG

RYAN GOSLING pulled out of a planned gig at New York Fashion Week on Thur= sday night (11Feb10) to reportedly concentrate on a new movie role.
The actor was due to play a set with his band Dead Man’s Bones at Milk = Studios in Manhattan, to launch the legendary style festival.
But Gosling scrapped plans to appear, leaving his bandmate Zack Shields= to play a DJ set instead.

BRIDGES WARY OF MOVIE INTERVIEWS

JEFF BRIDGES hates promoting his movies - because he fears he’ll reveal t= he plotlines to fans before the films are released.
