CLAPTON & BECK TEAM UP FOR FIRST JOINT INTERVIEW, DISCUSS RIFT
Rolling Stone magazine editors have landed guitar greats ERIC CLAPTON and= JEFF BECK’s first joint interview.
The two Brits agreed to chat to the publication’s David Fricke on the e= ve of their first-ever co-headlining tour, and Clapton reveals the collab= oration between the pair could not have come sooner - because they used t= o hate each other.
The Layla hitmaker, who was replaced by Beck in the Yardbirds in the 19= 60s, confesses, "We were enemies, basically." Clapton tells Rolling Stone he expected the Yardbirds to fall apart aft= er he left the band - and he was "hurt" when Beck signed on as his replac= ement.
He explains, "I wanted to be as critical of him as I could. It hurt me = bad because I could see they (Yardbirds) were getting, with Jeff, at some= thing beyond what I was capable of."
