GATELY DIED OF NATURAL CAUSES
BOYZONE star STEPHEN GATELY died of natural causes, a post-mortem has revealed.
The singer suffered pulmonary oedema - a build-up of fluid on the lungs - after a night’s drinking on the Spanish island of Majorca.
The autopsy findings possibly support early reports that Gately choked on his own vomit, but the condition can also be caused by congestive heart failure or problems with blood circulation.
A court official in Majorca said a sample of fluid taken from the lungs will be sent to a forensic laboratory in Barcelona for further tests to confirm the result.
She would not say whether analysis showed Gately had taken any drugs or alcohol but insisted they were not the cause of the tragedy.
The official also declined to comment on reports he had vomited before his death.
Gately was found dead at his luxury home in Port Andratx, Majorca on Saturday (10Oct09) by his partner Andrew Cowles and a clubber they met the previous evening in nearby Palma. Local police have stated there was no sign of violence or drug taking at the property.
Following the autopsy announcement on Tuesday (13Oct09), officials gave permission for Gately’s body to be returned to his native Ireland.
