COHEN PLAYS THREE-HOUR SHOW ON 75TH BIRTHDAY

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:39 am

LEONARD COHEN made a triumphant return to the stage with a three-hour concert on his 75th birthday on Monday (21Sep09).
The veteran singer sparked fears for his health after collapsing onstage in Valencia, Spain last week (18Sep09).
His concert was cut short after he fainted mid-song and was taken to the city’s Nueve de Octubre hospital, where he was treated for stomach flu.
But he was back on his feet to perform the last show of his European tour in front of 14,000 fans in Barcelona, Spain on Monday - the same day he turned 75.
The Hallelujah hitmaker was given a standing ovation as he stepped on stage at the Palau Sant Jordi concert hall, where he played for more than three hours.
And the star was moved after hundreds of fans held up lit candles handed out earlier in the evening to celebrate his special day.
His band member Dino Soldo wrote on Twitter.com, "To all the friends in Leonard Cohen’s Barcelona gig, your birthday candles brought a tear to my eye. He was touched." Concertgoers also tossed bouquets, books and teddy bears onto the stage, and the Canadian star thanked them by raising his hat and concluding the show with the parting words, "May your life be sweet as apples dipped in honey." He is scheduled to play a concert in Israel on Thursday (24Sep09) before travelling to North America to continue his tour in the U.S. next month (Oct09).

SWINTON’S ROYAL ROOTS

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:39 am

Oscar-winning actress TILDA SWINTON has learned she’s a direct descendant of 14th century Scottish king ROBERT THE BRUCE.
Genealogists in Edinburgh have discovered the Burn After Reading star is 19 generations removed from the monarch, aka Robert I, who freed Scotland from English rule.
Both the star’s parents are linked to the king’s grandson Robert II - Sir John Swinton is a descendant of Robert II’s illegitimate son, the Duke of Albany, while the actress’ mother Lady Swinton is descended from Robert II’s mistress, Mariotta Cardney.
The royal relations aren’t the only notable links found in the Swinton family tree - the 48 year old is also related to Alan Archibald Campbell Swinton, who took the first X-rays in the U.K., and Major General Sir Ernest Swinton, who helped develop the tank, according to new findings released to the media on Tuesday (22Sep09).

CORRE FINDS FRIEND DEAD

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:36 am

DAME VIVIENNE WESTWOOD’s fashion entrepreneur son is devastated after finding his best friend dead in his flat, according to reports.
Joe Corre, co-founder of the Agent Provocateur lingerie label, found Luca Mainardi’s body hanging at his London home on Thursday (17Sep09).
Corre, the son of former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren, was with the 48 year old the previous night as they recorded a new album as electro band Dirty Stop Out with former Clash star Mick Jones.
A source tells British tabloid The Sun, "It was a nightmare for him to stumble across the suicide of his closest friend. Naturally he is devastated.
"Joe and Luca spent their free time together hanging out and making music. Luca smoked a lot of cannabis and was very moody." A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police confirms the death is being treated as "non-suspicious".

SPACEY URGES INVESTMENT IN ARTS

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 9:36 am

KEVIN SPACEY met with the mayor of London on Monday (21Sep09) to discuss ways to increase financial backing for the arts.
The actor joined Boris Johnson at the British capital’s Victoria and Albert Museum, where they gathered with business leaders to plot ideas for investment in the U.K.’s cultural attractions during the global economic downturn.
Spacey, who serves as artistic director for London’s Old Vic theatre, argued the city’s museums and theatres serve to boost the economy.
He said, "I genuinely believe that the U.K.’s pre-eminence in arts and culture constitutes one of this nation’s most powerful national resources.
"Too often we highlight the social aspects of what we can achieve or the artistic merits which are, of course, important. But I believe at this time, at this moment, we should change tack. Instead of apologetically holding our hat in our hands, we should cite the economic successes of what is, after all, called show business."

LAW’S CROSS-DRESSING PROJECT GOES STRAIGHT TO CELLPHONE

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 3:09 am

JUDE LAW’s quirky turn as a drag artist in experimental movie RAGE is to be released on cellphones.
Law plays Minx in writer/director Sally Potter’s film, which is set to break records as the world’s smallest big film.
Potter tells WENN, "When I first wrote the part I was imagining it would be played by a woman and I suddenly realised one day it would be infinitely more interesting to be played by a man, because it’s so much about the construction of a persona, somebody who is pretending to be Russian with multiple disguises.
"When I thought of it being a man I immediately thought of Jude because he has been accused, so to speak, of being too beautiful. That gave us incredible material to work with and we had discussions about that when we were working on it. We worked together on the looks and spent quite a bit of time with make-up, hair and costume tests until we found the character." But the director still has no idea how successful the straight-to-phone venture will be.
She adds, "We don’t know how this is going to work, especially since it is the first ever feature on cellphones. We’re making it up as we go along and taking the plunge and the risk.
"There’s so much terror in the film industry at the moment about piracy, people stealing your idea and making money off of it; and the only way I found of dealing with that is to say, ‘Here, have it.’ If you keep looking over your shoulder, you don’t trailblaze.
"It’s not necessarily a great money spinner. At the moment I’m in debt but the great advantage of being in debt means you’ve got nothing to lose." Rage will launch in London later this week (24Sep09) with an interactive press conference, which will be beamed live to 40 screens all over the world and film fans will be able to text in their questions.
Potter explains, "The world begins to have the technology to serve us rather than the other way around. I’m looking forward to the chaos of it, which is inevitable. We will deal with someone who says something weird and we’re not afraid of something going wrong."

KELLY WAS A DRUG ADDICT ON THE OSBOURNES

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 3:09 am

KELLY OSBOURNE has revealed she was a "full-blown drug addict" by the time she became a reality TV star in THE OSBOURNES - and the high-profile show only made matters worse.
The pop star daughter of Ozzy Osbourne has revealed she was experimenting with drugs when she was as young as 13, and was wasted while she was shooting the hit show in her late teens.
In a candid chat with U.S. TV presenter Ellen DeGeneres, which aired on Monday (21Sep09), Osbourne said, "By the time we started doing The Osbournes I really was a full-blown drug addict.
"It was at a time in my life where suddenly I was famous, my mum had cancer, my dad almost died in a bike accident, so I was going between a hospital in London and a hospital in L.A… (and) I’d open magazines and it would be like, ‘The fat daughter of Ozzy Osbourne.’" She also struggled with the abuse she received at the hands of jealous critics: "People would drive past our house… and scream, ‘You’re fat and ugly, we hate you!’ And it would be, like, consistently every Friday and Saturday night. It was a lot for me to handle and I didn’t handle it very well." Looking back, she wishes she had been more open about her drug problems with her mum, Sharon, but she felt so ashamed.
She explained, "My mum had been in a relationship with my father for years and years and years when she tried to get him sober, and I was completely ashamed that I would have to go to her and tell her that her daughter had issues as well.
"I wanted to tell my mum so bad and I knew she kinda knew, but I felt like such a horrible daughter because I felt like I’d let her down."

MCCARTNEY CAME UP WITH HARRELSON’S ZOMBIE RUSE

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 3:06 am

SIR PAUL McCARTNEY turned spin doctor for pal WOODY HARRELSON when the actor hit the headlines for attacking paparazzi in New York in April (09) - the BEATLES star was the one who suggested the actor told reporters he thought the snapper was a zombie.
The movie star was reported to police after flying into a rage at La Guardia airport when a paparazzi cameraman refused to leave him and his daughter alone.
Harrelson was caught on camera attacking the unnamed man and smashing his equipment.
Shortly after the incident, the actor released a statement, in which he explained he was confused after spending days shooting new film Zombieland - and thought the cameraman was a member of the undead: "I flew to New York, still very much in character… I was startled by a paparazzo, who I quite understandably mistook for a zombie." Harrelson now explains the ruse was dreamed up by McCartney.
He tells Playboy magazine, "That was Paul’s idea… I was feeling awful about it (attack), and I ran into Sir Paul McCartney. We’ve been friends for a long time through our shared passion for veganism and many other issues. He’s got such a great capacity for happiness.
"I told him what happened and also that I’d just finished this movie called Zombieland, and Paul said, ‘That’s it, man. Just tell the press you thought the cameraman was a zombie.’ So that’s what we went with."

MACY GRAY IS READY TO DANCE

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 3:03 am

R&B star MACY GRAY has assured fans she’ll be giving TV talent show DANCING WITH THE STARS her all, despite reports she no longer wants to be a part of the new season.
The I Try singer will compete with Mya, Kelly Osbourne, Donny Osmond and supermodel Joanna Krupa when she hits the dancefloor for the show, which debuts in America on Monday night (21Sep09), and she’s keen to downplay comments she may have made suggesting she wants an early exit from the series.
Confessing she’s "terrified" about the prospect of showing off her dancing skills on live TV, Gray says, "I just want to look good and not fall." The singer, who will partner with professional Jonathan Roberts on the show, insists fans can count on her to make it to the top three out of the 16 celebrity hopefuls.
Gray adds, "I’m not gonna sit around thinking I’m gonna lose, but there’s a lot of competition… There’s a couple of trained dancers, like Mya." And she insists reports suggesting she’s ready to quit the show are false: "I don’t know how that got out… I was on tour in Europe… and a couple of times we had to cancel (rehearsals) because we didn’t have time.
Does she regret signing up for the show? "Not any more… I just wanna get the first show out of the way."

STORCH BACK WITH BROWN

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 3:03 am

Embattled producer SCOTT STORCH is hoping to rebuild his shattered career by working with another disgraced big name - CHRIS BROWN.
The hip-hop hitmaker, who produced Brown’s hit Run It!, had to fight to get back in the studio with the R&B star after falling from grace following a drug scancal last year (08).
Storch signed up for a stint in rehab earlier this year (Apr09) after blowing $30 million (£20 million) on cocaine.
Storch filed for bankruptcy one month later (May09) and has been struggling to rebuild his Tuff Jew Productions company ever since.
He got a break over the summer (09) when he landed work with Brown - but his manager Derek Jackson admits he had to convince the singer’s team to give Storch a second chance.
Jackson tells Details magazine, "I had to beg Chris’ manager, but the s**t is strong." Storch acknowledges he’s facing an uphill struggle to re-establish himself as a credible producer, but is confident he will soon regain his status as one of the go-to hitmakers in the music industry.
He says, "I’ve got to prove myself to the people who write cheques. (But) people will see that everything is intact." Brown is attempting to rebuild his career following his conviction for assaulting ex-girlfriend Rihanna in February (09).
He began a six-month community service punishment last week (ends18Sep09).

BUCHANAN QUITS SUGABABES

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 3:00 am

KEISHA BUCHANAN has announced her departure from the SUGABABES, insisting it was not her decision to leave the British girl group.
Buchanan, the last founding member of the pop trio, has confirmed she is set to embark upon a solo career - just days after reports suggesting singer Amelle Berrabah had walked out on the group broke.
Jade Ewen will join Berrabah and Heidi Range to complete the group, according to a statement on the Sugababes’ website.
Meanwhile, Buchanan has taken to her Twitter.com blog to dispel tabloid allegations she and Berrabah had clashed - and to tell fans she had no choice but to leave the band.
She writes, "Dear Friends, I’m sad to say that I am no longer a part of the Sugababes… Although it was not my choice to leave, it’s time to enter a new chapter in my life. I have nothing but positive things to say about the girls and I wish them the best of luck. I would like to state that there were no arguments, bullying or anything of the sort that lead to this.
"Sometimes a break down in communication and lack of trust can result in many different things. I would also like to point out that I have always supported the girls and they have also supported me." Ewen’s arrival marks a third line-up for the trio - Range was drafted in when Siobhan Donaghy quit in 2001, while founding member Mutya Buena left in 2005, making way for Berrabah.

HALLOWEEN CREEP LAUNCHES FILM COMPANY

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 3:00 am

The man behind the mask of director ROB ZOMBIE’s HALLOWEEN ghoul MICHAEL MEYERS has formed his own horror film production company.
Tyler Mane has launched Mane Entertainment, LLC and hopes to start shooting his first project, the horror thriller Penance Lane, in 2010.
The actor, who has also appeared in Troy and X-Men, insists his films will be super-low budget.
He tells WENN, "Right now you have to go smaller to get bigger. I think we, as filmmakers, need to be more responsible in this rough economic period, and mitigate the financial risk of making films.
"Indie films are taking a beating. I firmly believe that some of the best, most creative films are done on a smaller budget. If you’re absolutely committed to getting a high quality project, it forces you to think outside the box and make the best use of your resources."
