MICHAEL JACKSON came close to dying of dehydration during his child molestation trial in 2005 - because he was so scared he would be poisoned, he refused to eat or drink anything.
The pop superstar was acquitted of all charges in 2005, but the long and embarrassing trial drove Jackson to paranoia and starvation.
Friend Dick Gregory recalls, "The last week of the trial, I got a call from (Jackson’s father) Joe and a message from his mother saying I needed to come out and take a look at him because they were worried about his demeanour.
"When (we went) to Neverland and he asked me to come upstairs and he grabbed me and started crying and said, ‘Please don’t leave me, they’re trying to kill me’. I said, ‘When was the last time you ate?’ and he said, ‘No, they’ll poison me’. Then I said, ‘When was the last time you drank water?’ and so one thing led to another." Gregory advised the Thriller hitmaker to undergo a series of tests to determine what was wrong: "The only thing it pointed out was he was extremely dehydrated, nothing wrong with his heart, nothing wrong with his lungs. So the next day we get out of court and I said, ‘I need to take you to a hospital,’ and he said, ‘No, no, they’ll kill me!’" Gregory finally managed to convince Jackson to check into a hospital and spend the night receiving the treatment he desperately needed.
The pal adds, "So we went to a hospital in San Francisco and they start examining him. At about 6pm, they start intravenously putting liquid in him, and, at about 6am they were still putting liquid in him. The doctor said to me, had he waited 12 more hours he would have been dead." Jackson died after suffering a cardiac arrest on 25 June (09). Reports suggest the King of Pop was emaciated when paramedics arrived at his rented Los Angeles home following an emergency call.

TONY ROMO ditched JESSICA SIMPSON after striking up a close friendship with the daughter of his college sports coach, according to U.S. tabloid reports.
The pair shocked the showbiz world when they split this month (Jul09), coming so soon after rumours they planned to tie the knot.
However Us Weekly magazine alleges a second woman may have contributed to the break-up.
Sources tell the tabloid that in the months leading up to the split, Romo had been exchanging flirty text messages and emails with 22-year-old Natalie Smith, whose dad John coached the sportsman at Eastern Illinois University.
It’s also alleged that Romo flew Smith to his Dallas, Texas home for a three-day stay shortly after he split from Simpson.
The insider tells Us, "They’re not officially dating, but they are having an intimate relationship.
"No one who knows them is surprised." When approached by Us, Smith denied she was anything more than "friends" with the Dallas Cowboys quarterback, insisting, "This is crazy. We have always been friends and there is nothing else to it."

JUDE LAW is to be a dad again - a former lover is expecting the British star’s fourth child.
Law’s publicist has confirmed the actor is no longer "in a relationship" with the mother of his unborn child.
The spokesperson tells EW.com, "Jude Law can confirm that, following a relationship last year, he has been advised that he is to be the father of a child due in the fall of this year.
"Mr. Law is no longer in a relationship with the individual concerned but he intends to be a fully supportive part of the child�s life. This is an entirely private matter and no other statements will be made." Law has three kids from his former marriage to actress Sadie Frost - Rafferty, 12, Iris, eight, and six-year-old Rudy Indiana Otis.
Reports suggest the Alfie star is currently single. He split from actress girlfriend Sienna Miller after his infidelity with his children’s nanny was exposed in 2005.

LINDSAY LOHAN has dismissed reports she is set for the wild life as the star of a jungle reality TV show.
The actress is desperate for a hit film, but not desperate enough to appear on the British version of celebrity show I�m a Celebrity� Get Me Out of Here!.
A British magazine suggested Lohan was in talks to lead the cast for the upcoming series, in which stars attempt to survive in the jungle for several weeks with only basic necessities, earning their food in a series of challenging tasks.
But a representative for the Mean Girls star is adamant Lohan will not be camping out in front of the cameras any time soon, calling the rumours, "completely ridiculous and untrue,� according to GossipCop.com.

A representative for MADONNA has hit out at new pumped-up pictures of the pop star, insisting the snaps must have been doctored.
The muscly Madonna shots emerged online earlier this week (beg27Jul09), prompting gossips to suggest the singer had been overdoing her gym work-outs.
But a spokesperson for the 50 year old insists the photographs can’t be real - because the singer "does not look like that in real life." CROWDED HOUSE star NEIL FINN has revisited his all-star 7 Worlds Collide project by forming a new supergroup incorporating guitarist JOHNNY MARR, KT TUNSTALL and members of RADIOHEAD and WILCO.
The many musicians recorded new tracks in Finn’s native New Zealand over Christmas 2008 and the tunes will feature on a double album, released to raise funds for Oxfam.
Tunstall reportedly interrupted her honeymoon to record her offerings and Radiohead’s Phil Selway and Ed Oâ��Brien flew in for the sessions.
The album, titled The Sun Came Out, will be released on 29 September (09).

AC/DC frontman BRIAN JOHNSON is considering retirement - because, at 61, he fears he’s getting too old to rock.
The You Shook Me All Night Long singer has revealed he planned to quit as the Aussie rockers’ singer in 2010 - 20 years after he replaced Bon Scott in the group - but his bandmates have persuaded him to rock on for another nine months, to fulfil festival commitments into 2011.
Johnson tells Classic Rock magazine, "We were talking about the end of the (current Black Ice) tour and I said, ‘We’re finishing in May (10) - and that’s me done!’ "But Malcolm (Young) said, ‘What are you talk in’ about? We’re not gonna let you retire!’" Johnson admits he does his best to stay in shape for tours, but he’s not sure he’s got what it takes to carry on.
He adds, "I try to keep myself fit, and I love it being in this band… (but) the other lads are in their early fifties. I’m the old dog in the regiment. It’s a purely selfish thing. I don’t want to look a prat if I try to push it too far. I don’t want for people to see me on stage and say, ‘Oh, poor old f**ker, the band’s carrying him!’" But, for now, he’s enjoying the ride: "It never gets boring. They’re just the best rock band, and just to listen to them every night, it gets me. Every time they kick in, you think, ‘What the f**k!’ You’re on again and you’re thinking, ‘This is ridiculous! I’m still grooving!’"

Police officials in Georgia have defended their decision to release a man they arrested for making "inappropriate commentsâ�� to young MILEY CYRUS fans on the set of the teen star’s new film THE LAST SONG, insisting a jail was too full to hold him.
Mark McLeod, 53, was arrested by Tybee Island Police in Savannah, Georgia last month (22Jun09) and booked on two misdemeanour charges.
Police reports suggest McLeod had �been camping at Tybee for three or four days and that he had observed Cyrus on her balcony, that he sent her special presents and that he (claimed he) was going to marry Cyrus and even invited the (arresting) police officer to the wedding." McLeod was transferred to the Chatham County Jail the day after his arrest (23Jun09) but he was released because the prison was too full. He had no money to post bail and instead signed a subpoena promising to appear in court on 1 September (09).
Now, the local media has forced police authorities in Georgia to defend their decision to release him.
Insisting McLeod poses no threat to himself, Cyrus or her fans, Chatham County Sheriff Al St Lawrence says, "If we had heard something about this guy supposedly being a stalker or he had been charged with a felony, he wouldnâ��t have been released… He was charged with two non-violent misdemeanours and we acted accordingly."

Actress RACHELLE LEFEVRE has been left stunned by the news BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD is to take her role in the third TWILIGHT drama - because she thought the part was hers indefinitely.
Lefevre played flame-haired vampire Victoria in the first Twilight film, and will reprise the role in the upcoming sequel New Moon - but producers at Summit Entertainment have opted to replace her with the Spider-Man 3 star for the third film, Eclipse over a "scheduling problem".
In a statement, the actress reveals she had no idea her Twilight time was about to end.
She says, "I was fully committed to the Twilight saga… I turned down several other film opportunities and, in accordance with my contractual rights, accepted only roles that would involve very short shooting schedules." But it seems her decision to take a role in the movie adaptation of Mordecai Richler novel Barneyâ��s Version upset her Twilight bosses.
Lefevre adds, "Summit (producers) said they had a conflict… and would not accommodate me. Given the length of filming for Eclipse, never did I fathom I would lose the role over a 10 day overlap.
"I was happy with my contract with Summit and was fully prepared to continue to honour it. Summit chose simply to recast the part." The actress insists she’s "greatly saddened" and "hurt deeply" by Summitâ��s "surprising decision to move on without me."

Latino comedian GEORGE LOPEZ has set his sights on landing U.S. President BARACK OBAMA as a guest on his new late-night chat show - because he considers the American leader a friend.

"I would say that if he came to Los Angeles again with Michelle and his mother-in-law, that I would like them to stop by. Married Hollywood stars SCARLETT JOHANSSON and RYAN REYNOLDS have shot down reports a blazing fight between the pair was to blame for the actor’s absence from California’s Comic-Con event at the weekend (24-26Jul09).
Fans of Reynolds expected the star to attend this year’s (09) convention in San Diego, California to promote upcoming comic book movie adaptation The Green Lantern.

A mystery "friend" of MICHAEL JACKSON’s has agreed to pen a new introduction for the King of Pop’s 20-year-old memoir Moonwalk, which will be reissued in October (09).
Random House bosses have ordered a first print of 100,000 copies of the tome, which was originally acquired by Jackie Onassis, when she was the book editor at publishing house Double Day, and released in 1988.
The book deal was agreed last week (23Jul09), according to the Los Angeles Times newspaper, when the executors of Jackson’s estate filed papers suggesting that such business should be attended to quickly in order to capitalise on "the notoriety surrounding Michael Jacksonâ��s unexpected death".
The book’s original editor, Shaye Areheart - who worked closely with Onassis - will oversee the reissue.
The Moonwalk revamp will be released simultaneously in America, Germany, France and the U.K.
A New York Times bestseller, the memoir was a tightly guarded secret project, code named Neil Armstrong, up until its 1988 release.

Dwayne Swingler claims he’d pick up a bag of pills from an unofficial clinic in Santa Barbara, California four times a week - and deliver it direct to the doped-up pop superstar.
The personal assistant was so trusted by Jacko, he was entrusted with the running of his Neverland estate - and quickly became Jackson’s right-hand man.
The job came with a Bentley, designer suits and gifts, but also meant leading regular estate search parties for the missing star.
Swingler tells U.S. publication the Globe, "He was a zombie. He’d wander off up to half a mile away. I’d have to go find him and bring him back home.
"He was doped up 24 hours a day for so many years - it’s a miracle he survived as long as he did." Jackson died on 25 June (09) after suffering a cardiac arrest at his rented home in Los Angeles. Reports suggest the pop star suffered an overdose of anaesthetic drugs.

The All Summer Long hitmaker sees no point in celebrities blogging about their every move and thought online, and he admits he’s close to snapping at the next person who asks him about the popular site.
He tells Rolling Stone, "It’s gay. If one more person asks me if I have a Twitter, I’m going to tell them, ‘Twitter this s**t, motherf**ker.’ I don’t have anything to say, and what I have to say is not that relevant. Anything that is relevant, I’m going to bottle it up and then squeeze it onto a record somewhere."
