The Sex And The City star was filming for British television show Who Do You Think You Are?, which follows a number of celebrities who trace back their family trees.
But the actress found out more than she expected when she tried to understand what had happened to her grandfather after he mysteriously disappeared in 1939.
Seventy years ago he walked out on his wife, leaving Cattrall’s then-eight-year-old mother and her two other siblings to fend for themselves.
But she was left heartbroken when a newspaper cutting from the 1980s revealed that he was actually a bigamist - he married someone else while still married to her grandmother.

MICHAEL JACKSON was so desperate to sleep he begged a doctor to give him sedative Propofol, despite receiving a warning it could kill him.
The late King of Pop’s death is currently undergoing an extensive investigation, with the powerful anaesthetic central to the enquiry.
The star became so addicted to the drug he pleaded with Dr Dwayne James to give it to him - even though the medic warned him how dangerous it was just months before his death on 25 June (09).
Shortly before he died of a cardiac arrest, the Thriller hitmaker phoned James to demand Propofol, also known as Diprivan.
The doctor says, "Michael said he desperately wanted to get hold of the drug. I immediately told him that Diprivan was dangerous and he should never take it at home, it could kill him.
"He said, ‘But I’ve had it before, I sleep so well, like a baby. It knocked me out, I love it, it’s great, can’t you give me some?’ "He didn’t seem to care that I was telling him it was dangerous. There was no convincing him. What struck me was that he didn’t seem to have any fear about taking Diprivan, despite everything I was saying." James claims Jackson rang his nurse Cherilyn Lee just four days before he died asking for the sedative again.
Lee says, "He said, ‘Find me an anaesthesiologist. I don’t care how much money they want. Find me an anaesthesiologist to be with me here overnight and give me this IV. I said, ‘This is not a safe medicine, please don’t take it.’ I would not give it to anyone."

A second doctor’s clinic has been raided by police investigating the death of MICHAEL JACKSON - the star’s skin doctor ARNOLD KLEIN is to be investigated.
The offices of the King of Pop’s personal physician Dr. Conrad Murray were targeted by drug cops on Wednesday (22Jul09) as part of their ongoing investigation into the superstar’s death.
Now officers have swooped on Klein’s place of work, after it was revealed Jackson’s mother, Katherine, pressed for the probe to be widened to include a second, unidentified medic.
Medical records were seized from Klein’s offices earlier this week (beg20Jul09), which showed he had treated the star with large amounts of the painkiller Demerol and once gave him four times the daily maximum recommended amount of the drug in 1993.
Jackson’s close friend and former plastic surgeon, Dr Steven Hoefflin, says, "I had no idea Michael was being given this insane amount of Demerol… I feel Dr Klein was overtreating him to make money. I have launched a lawsuit against Dr Klein for fraud. It is my opinion that he got my patient addicted to Demerol." Hoefflin also insists several other doctors could be quizzed by cops over Jackson’s death, adding: "A further eight could stand to lose their medical licences if found to have prescribed drugs inappropriately."

NICOLE RICHIE is reportedly planning to pay tribute to her late godfather MICHAEL JACKSON by naming her unborn child after him.
The adopted daughter of pop legend Lionel Richie remained close to the King of Pop until he died of a cardiac arrest last month (Jun09).
Friends of the star claim she’s determined to mark his death - by giving her second child his name; Michael for a boy and Michelle for a girl.
A source tells Star magazine, "Nicole is devastated by Michael’s death. She loved him and it happened so suddenly. She wasn’t planning on naming the baby after him, but she thinks it’s fitting now that he’s gone." Richie is due to give birth to her second child with partner Joel Madden in the autumn, the pair already has a one-year-old daughter, Harlow.

AMERICAN IDOL star PAULA ABDUL has been offered a seat on the judging panel of another TV talent contest - SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE.
Abdul’s future on the singing competition was thrown into doubt last week (19Jul09) when her manager, David Sonenberg, told the Los Angeles Times that "it does not appear" that she will be returning to Idol in 2010.
But now she could be set for a move over to the rival dance show, after the programme’s judge Nigel Lythgoe revealed he would consider her for a role "without a question".
Lythgoe, who created the dance talent show in 2005, used to be a producer on American Idol, while Abdul has worked as a successful choreographer.
Discussions have come to a halt between Abdul and TV executives as she bids to return to her spot alongside fellow judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and last year’s (08) newcomer Kara DioGuardi.
New reports claim the reason behind Abdul’s delayed contract renewal is because she is demanding $20 million (£13.3 million) - $10 million (£6.6 million) more than bosses are willing to offer her.

MICHAEL JACKSON’s eldest children PRINCE MICHAEL and PARIS are helping their younger brother BLANKET understand their dad has passed away.
The King of Pop’s youngest child, Prince Michael II, aka Blanket, has been struggling to understand where his father is since the star died of a cardiac arrest last month (25Jun09).
Jackson’s longterm friend, former child star Mark Lester, revealed during the Thriller hitmaker’s memorial service at Los Angles’ Staples Center on 7 July (09) that a confused Blanket asked him, "Where’s Daddy gone? On holiday?" The seven year old’s siblings, 12-year-old Prince Michael and Paris, 11, have since been helping their younger brother understand their father has gone forever.
Jackson’s brother, Jermaine, says, "Blanket is very young and so sweet - too cute for words - but he’s very smart. I think he understands his dad has passed because of the ceremony. Paris and Prince are very bright and they have tried to explain it to him."

MICHAEL JACKSON’s eldest son PRINCE MICHAEL watched as DR CONRAD MURRAY failed to revive his father’s dead body, according to reports.
The late King of Pop’s medic is said to have called the boy over to see him perform cardiac resuscitation on his father - because he wanted to have a witness.
But the Jackson clan is "sickened" the 12 year old was allegedly allowed to watch the failed attempt, according to close family friend and the singer’s former doctor Dr Steven Hoefflin.
Speaking on behalf of family matriach Katherine, Hoefflin alleges Prince Michael was "understandably traumatised" after seeing his dad die on 25 June (09).
Hoefflin tells Britain’s The Sun, "I have been told by the family and from talking to the children that on the night Michael died, Dr Murray actually got one of the Jackson children - it was Prince Michael - to personally come into the bedroom to watch him performing CPR on his father. The family have told me Dr Murray ensured Prince Michael understood the CPR procedure and that he was doing it correctly.
"It is the family’s belief that this was intended to show a member of Michael’s family that he was trying to bring Michael back to life. In my opinion Dr Murray should have known Michael was already dead and I believe that is the reason he didn’t move from the bed to the harder surface of the floor to perform CPR. It was horrific and very traumatic for Prince Michael. Katherine and the rest of the family are sickened this happened." Murray is currently under investigation in connection with the tragedy as police delve deeper into the mystery surrounding his sudden death.
On Wednesday (23Jul09) his offices in Houston, Texas were raided by police officers to seize all documents relating to his treatment of Jackson, including medical notes, details of any drugs he was taking, and records of prescriptions he handed out to the star.

Federline hopes to land a deal to document his day-to-day life with his two sons and his new girlfriend, Victoria Prince, for a new reality series.
But his pop star ex is refusing to give permission for Sean Preston, three, and two-year-old Jayden James to appear on the programme - and is considering launching a legal battle to limit filming.

DANIEL RADCLIFFE has lashed out at homophobes, insisting people who hate homosexuals are "disgusting and stupid".
The Harry Potter star, reportedly dating actress Laura O’Toole, finds it "awesome" when fans think he is gay, and blasts those who hate same-sex couples as uneducated.

JOHNNY DEPP whipped fans into a frenzy after making a surprise appearance at a comic convention in California on Thursday (23Jul09).
Director Tim Burton was speaking to an audience about his upcoming Alice In Wonderland movie at the Comic-Con International event at the San Diego Convention Center when he asked if they’d like to meet the "imaginary friend" who follows him around.
Depp, who plays the Mad Hatter in the upcoming fantasy film, then walked on stage, causing the crowd to erupt into cheers and applause.
After the hysteria calmed down, Depp said into a microphone, "Hey. Happy to be here," before waving and walking backstage.
Fans were in for a further treat as Burton screened footage featuring Depp as his Mad Hatter character, before joking about the inspiration behind his unusual look: "John and I worked together many times, but he’s never done a character with orange hair. Rapper DIZZEE RASCAL was left shocked while filming a music video when a group of women turned up onset for a sex party.
The British hip-hop star hired a villa on the island of Ibiza to shoot the promo for his new single Holiday - which included a group of beautiful girls in bikinis.

Actor JAMES SPADER is on the hunt for a missing set of nude photos taken before he became a celebrity - because he doesn’t want the public to judge the size of his manhood.

MEGAN FOX has slammed reports she turned down an offer to star in the upcoming JAMES BOND film, insisting she’s a huge fan of the action franchise.
The Transformers beauty was said to have refused the chance to star alongside Daniel Craig in the 23rd superspy film because she wanted to play more than just the superspy’s love interest.

MICHAEL JACKSON named his daughter PARIS after PARIS HILTON, according to the socialite herself.
The Simple Life star claims Jackson was close friends with her mother Kathy, and asked her permission to use the name when his 11-year-old daughter was born.
Hilton tells U.S. TV show Extra, "My mom and Michael went to high school together and they were best friends since they were 13.
"So I grew up knowing Michael very well and when he had his daughter, he always loved the name Paris and grew up being an uncle to me. So he asked my mom if it was okay and of course she said yes and I think she’s such a beautiful little girl and I’m proud we have the same name."

Rocker IAN BROWN is adamant his next album MY WAY will be his best to date - because he used MICHAEL JACKSON’s record-breaking THRILLER LP as his "blueprint".
The former Stones Roses frontman is set to release his sixth solo studio album this year (09), and he was determined to ensure every track is perfect.
During studio sessions, Brown used Jackson as his inspiration, and set out to produce an album to match the singer’s iconic 1982 record - which is the biggest selling album of all time, spawning seven hit singles.
And Brown is convinced using Jackson’s work will bring him luck - because he completed recording on the day the tragic superstar died from a cardiac arrest.
He tells NME, "We thought, ‘Let’s make an album that’s got no flab, where every song is a single’. So Thriller was our blueprint.
"Every time we wrote a song we didn’t think was strong enough, we just scrapped it. And we mastered it on the day that Michael Jackson died too, so I’m taking that as a good omen." Brown has proved he’s a huge Jackson fan in the past - the singer sang Thriller and Billie Jean for his 2005 compilation album.
