BEATLES’ YELLOW SUBMARINE DESIGNER DIES

Famed art director HEINZ EDELMANN, who crafted psychedelic BEATLES film YELLOW SUBMARINE, has died aged 75.
The graphic designer and illustrator, who received worldwide acclaim for the 1968 animated movie, died on Tuesday (21Jul09) in Stuttgart, Germany. The cause of death was stated as heart disease and kidney failure.
The Beatles’ project was his first feature-length animated film, built around a 1966 song of the same name, credited to John Lennon and Paul McCartney, with lead vocals by Ringo Starr.
In addition to his work with the Fab Four, Edelmann was a highly successful illustrator in Germany, England and the Netherlands.
He illustrated the first German edition of J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and designed the mascot for the Expo ’92 world fair in Seville, Spain.
Edelmann is survived by his wife, Anna, a daughter, Valentine, and one grandchild.
