French police are investigating the collapse of MADONNA’s stage in Marseille as a manslaughter case after two workers were killed in the tragic accident.
One French man was crushed to death and several others injured on Thursday (16Jul09) when a crane used to put stage lights into place fell, causing a large section of the stage at Marseilles’ Stade Velodrome to collapse on top of workers underneath.
A British man died from his injuries on Friday morning (17Jul09).
Authorities are trying to find out how the tragedy happened, and assistant prosecutor Marc Simamonti has confirmed that officials from the prosecutor’s office for manslaughter and involuntary injuries in a work-related accident have been assigned to the investigation.
The victims have yet to officially be identified, but Madonna paid tribute to the two who lost their lives building her set for her Sticky & Sweet tour.
Referring to the pair as "The Two Charlies", she fought back tears at her concert in Udine, Italy on Thursday (16Jul09), when she told the crowd, "You may have heard of it… When they were building my show in Marseille, where we’re going next - we don’t know why, but one of the cranes fell… Two men lost their lives, it was a great tragedy to me.
"I feel so, so devastated to be in any way associated with anyone suffering. Let’s all just take a moment to say a prayer for The Two Charlies. Our hearts go out to their families and loved ones… We are so blessed and lucky to be alive." Madonna was due to kick off the first of five shows at the stadium on Sunday (19Jul09), but that date has now been cancelled. As WENN went to press, it was not known whether the four remaining concerts would still go ahead.

LINDSAY LOHAN has once again channelled her idol MARILYN MONROE for a new fashion magazine photoshoot in the Hollywood Hills.
The Mean Girls star recreated the late actress’ famous Last Sitting snaps for a 2008 issue of New York magazine, and now she’s donned a curly platinum blonde wig to emulate Monroe for the cover of Spanish Vogue.
Lohan is well known for her love of all things Monroe - she even has a quote from the Some Like It Hot star tattooed around her wrist.

Bosses at the company behind the construction of MADONNA’s stage in France have dismissed any speculation of a link between Thursday’s (16Jul09) Marseilles disaster and the collapse of the pop superstar’s set in Los Angeles last November (08) - which they were also hired to build.
Two men died and several others were injured after a crane fell, causing a large section of the stage at Marseilles Stade Velodrome to cave in and crush technicians working below.
French police have launched a manslaughter investigation into the tragedy, and now executives at construction firm E S Group are looking into how the incident could have occurred.
In a statement released to TMZ.com on Friday (17Jul09), bosses claim they are "incredibly saddened" by the accident, and are sending their thoughts to the victims’ families.
A rep adds, "Two of our directors have flown out to Marseille to visit the injured and to get a better understanding of what caused the accident. At present, it would not be appropriate to speculate on potential causes of the accident, but we are working closely with the French authorities to investigate what caused this incident. This is normal practice for such an incident and we will provide a further update as soon as it is possible." And they have been quick to play down any link between this week’s (16Jul09) incident and the one in L.A. last year (08), when the stage at Dodger Stadium - where both Madonna and Britney Spears played - fell in similar circumstances.
E S Group officials say, "There is absolutely no technical or other connection between the incident at the Dodgers Stadium in November 2008 and the tragic accident yesterday (July 16 2009) at the Velodrome in Marseille." Madonna was due to kick off the first of five shows at the Marseille stadium on Sunday (19Jul09), but that date has now been cancelled.

LIMP BIZKIT rocker FRED DURST has married his girlfriend ESTHER in a secret ceremony.
The 38 year old made the announcement on Friday (17Jul09) via Twitter.com, from Las Vegas, where the couple is honeymooning.
He wrote, "Cheers to the universe from me and my lovely wife Esther Durst! We are now one and complete. )" Durst later posted pictures on the site of the pair toasting their nuptials with cocktails.
The wedding comes just three months after he announced their engagement with a Tweet, revealing, "I’ve never known true love until now. So grateful." Durst has two children from previous relationships.

TRUE BLOOD creator ALAN BALL blames his fascination with death on a horrifying childhood experience - when he watched as his sister was killed in a car crash.
The writer has tackled the macabre in all of his film and TV projects, including American Beauty, funeral parlour drama Six Feet Under and vampire series True Blood.
He insists death has stayed with him since the adolescent tragedy.
Ball, 52, explains to Entertainment Weekly, "When I was 13 years old I was in a car accident with my sister who was driving the car. It was her 22nd birthday and she died. She died in front of me. She died all over me. (Death) stuck its big old ugly face in my face and my life changed. That’s why death seems to be a theme that appears in all my stuff."

Actor DENNIS FARINA has been given a break by a Los Angeles judge - he’s had a 2008 gun possession charge dropped and wiped from his record.
The Midnight Run star was arrested in May (08) after he was caught carrying a loaded and unregistered .22 calibre pistol through security at Los Angeles’ LAX Airport.
He was booked for carrying a concealed weapon but later reached a deal with prosecutors to have the felony reduced to the lesser accusation of entering an airport sanitary area with a weapon, reports TMZ.com.
Farina, 64, pleaded no contest to the charge last July (08) and was sentenced to two years probation.
The actor was back in court on Friday (17Jul09), exactly one year after he accepted the deal, with his lawyer Blair Berk requesting the withdrawal of the no contest plea, telling the judge, "Not all mistakes should be prosecuted as crimes." But he received more than he was asking for when the judge decided to scrap the charge altogether and have the arrest expunged from his otherwise clean record.

Fan mementos left outside the former Motown Records studio in Detroit, Michigan in tribute to MICHAEL JACKSON are to be buried in a cemetery.
Hundreds of mourners flocked to what is now the Motown Historical Museum - the site of the studio where the Jackson 5 used to record - after the singer’s sudden death on 25 June (09) to leave flowers, letters, soft toys and other tributes to the King of Pop.
Museum officials kept the items safe as they waited for instructions from the Jackson family as to what to do with the collection of gifts.
But they subsequently decided to bury the lot and make their own memorial to the Thriller hitmaker in the local Woodlawn Cemetery.
Two hearses arrived on Friday morning (17Jul09) to take the gifts to the burial ground, where they will be placed in two donated plots.
A few words and prayers will be held at the site before the burial.
Jackson himself has yet to be laid to rest - reports suggest his body is being held in a secure vault in a mystery location after being moved from ex-Motown Records boss Berry Gordy’s private crypt at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in the Hollywood Hills.
He is expected to be buried once autopsy results, which have been delayed for another two weeks, are complete.

Rapper 50 CENT has backed down from a September (09) chart battle with hip-hop superstar JAY-Z - he’s pushed back the release of his new album by two weeks.
The In Da Club hitmaker was rumoured to be dropping his upcoming disc Before I Self Destruct on the same day as Jay-Z’s highly-anticipated Blueprint 3 on 11 September (09).
However, 50 Cent has postponed his project and it will now hit stores Stateside on 29 September (09), putting an end to reports of a clash.
The G-Unit frontman has previously gone head-to-head with another artist on Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella Records, Kanye West.
The pair released albums on the same date in 2007, but 50 was left licking his wounds when he emerged the loser. West’s Graduation outsold Curtis by an estimated 266,000 copies in the U.S. to snag the number one spot, while the Stronger star also came out on top in the U.K.

Parents-to-be JOEL MADDEN and NICOLE RICHIE are giving their unborn child an early lesson in how to be environmentally friendly - the couple has reportedly turned its nursery into a green haven.

MISCHA BARTON told a U.S. magazine she was "happy and healthy" just days before she was reportedly placed in psychiatric care.
Reports on Thursday (16Jul09) suggested the 23 year old had been placed on involuntary psychiatric hold after suffering a meltdown and calling cops to her Los Angeles home the day before.
Los Angeles police and Barton’s representative have confirmed she required assistance for "a medical issue", but have yet to reveal further details.
The incident took place just a week after British magazine Heat printed unflattering images of her from a night out in London, describing her as "bloated" and "out of control".
Speaking to Life & Style after Heat hit news stands, Barton insisted she was "healthy and comfortable".
She said, "It does get cumbersome to have to address the same non-issues on a repeated basis. Fortunately, I’m healthy and comfortable in my own skin.
"I’m happy. I wouldn’t change my body and I couldn’t anyway. The only way to be happy and be a more enjoyable person is to embrace what you’ve got."

METALLICA drummer LARS ULRICH is "proud" he helped to destroy internet file-sharing website NAPSTER - but insists he doesn’t revel in "glory".
The Enter Sandman hitmakers made headlines around the world in 2000 when they prompted legal action against the website after Ulrich discovered the band’s back catalogue was available to users for free.
He is adamant the rockers did the right thing in spearheading the campaign to bring down Napster - but admires the website’s bosses for painting the band as "greedy rock pigs".
Ulrich tells rock magazine Kerrang!, "Being right about Napster doesn’t mean that much to me. I don’t find any particular glory in being proved right about it.
"You have to give props to the other side because they did run a brilliant campaign, and they did portray me and Metallica as being greedy rock pigs and luddites who were completely behind what was happening technologically. But I am proud of what we did, and what we stood up for."

Rockers DEFTONES have written a new album in honour of hospitalised bass player CHI CHENG.
Cheng slipped into a coma after an horrific car crash in Santa Clara, California last November (08), and has still yet to regain full consciousness.
The band completed a new album, Eros, before Cheng’s accident, but put the record on hold and instead penned a new batch of songs to help cope with the trauma.
And singer Chino Moreno is adamant his bandmate would be "proud" of the new tunes.
He tells Kerrang! magazine, "To see your brother in that condition… I can’t even find the words to explain how it feels. I’ve spent the last 20 years of my life right next to him. Every little thing we do, I’m used to doing with Chi by my side. Now, when I look over, he’s not there.
"At the moment, he’s still in a coma. It’s a weird stage. When someone’s in a state like that, he’s still here with us but yet he’s not. He’s in limbo. It’s been pretty tough. I miss my friend. I want him to come back. I hope he comes back soon.
"I know that, deep down, Chi would be proud of us and, in a big way, we’re doing this (new album) for him. We’re trying to do the best we can for him, for us, and for the situation, and that’s to bury our heads in music. If anything positive can come out of this, then working on this music has really brought rest of us guys very, very close."

American TV star TOM COLICCHIO is expecting his first child with his writer/director wife LORI SILVERBUSH.
The Top Chef judge earned two Emmy nominations for the hit U.S. show on Thursday (16Jul09), but insists he’s more excited about the August birth.
The couple know the tot is a boy and have already picked out a name, which they are keeping a secret for now.

A man who allegedly sold the gun that killed former American footballer STEVE MCNAIR has been arrested by federal agents, following the star’s tragic murder-suicide death.
The married former Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens quarterback, 36, was found with two gunshot wounds to the head and two to the chest on 4 July (09) in a downtown Nashville condominium. The body of his girlfriend, Sahel Kazemi, was found nearby, with just one gunshot.
Tennessee police announced last week (08Jul09) that McNair was killed by Kazemi - who they believe fired the semi-automatic weapon, recovered from beside her own body, and turned the gun on herself.
According to TMZ.com, law enforcement agents at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have taken an as yet unidentified man - who allegedly sold the gun to Kazemi on 2 July (09) - into custody in Nashville, Tennessee.
Charges are expected to be announced on Friday afternoon (17Jul09).

MEL GIBSON’s estranged wife ROBYN has moved on from the heartbreak of her failed marriage to the actor - she’s found love with a new beau, according to reports.
The Lethal Weapon star’s wife filed for divorce in April (09), citing "irreconcilable differences" for the end of their 28-year marriage.
It later emerged the couple had split in 2006, a month after Gibson’s arrest for drink driving.
The actor has since announced he is expecting his eighth child with his Russian lover Oksana Grigorieva - and the National Enquirer reports Robyn has found happiness too.
A source tells the tabloid, "Robyn is in love and having the time of her life with a new guy from northern California.
"She’s introduced him to her children and they think he’s great. …But she’s downplayed the relationship. She always introduces the guy as her ‘friend’." The former couple share seven kids together. In her divorce papers, Robyn has asked for spousal support and legal costs, as well as joint physical and legal custody their youngest son, Tom - their only minor child.
