CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG sent text messages to her actress mother JANE BIRKIN every day while filming horror/drama ANTICHRIST - so she could laugh about the traumatic scenes she had to shoot.
Gainsbourg was terrified of her role in Danish moviemaker Lars von Trier’s violent and graphic film, in which her character mutilates her own genitals while struggling to cope with the loss of her only child.
So the 37 year old turned to her mum Birkin for approval - and to find humour in filming the brutal scenes.
She explains, "I had a real dialogue with my mother during the shoot. I needed to make jokes about the whole thing. It was so heavy and it was great to be able to describe my day to her and joke with her about what I was doing.
"It was like, ‘Guess what I’ve been doing today?’ You know, my day would go from crying and howling and screaming into the sex and the blood. It was hysterical and to put it into words in a text message was hilarious." Gainsbourg even referred to her mother’s sexually explicit 1969 movie Je t’aime… moi non plus, directed by her French filmmaker father Serge Gainsbourg, to feel justified in taking on such a daring part.
She adds, "It’s true that for this film I did refer to my mother a lot, in the sense that she had done Je t’aime… moi non plus, and it was very shocking at the time. And she was into a lot of sex scenes and nudity and it was like permission for me to do it myself.
"It’s like she had been on that journey before me and, really, it gave me the authorisation to do what I was doing and to know that it was OK, even to feel good about it and not ashamed."

SURVIVOR star RICHARD HATCH’s dreams of a reality TV comeback have been shot down - a judge has refused to end his home confinement sentence so he can appear on the show in Samoa.
Hatch was crowned the winner of Survivor: Borneo in 2000, but he was indicted and sentenced to four years behind bars in 2005 for failing to pay tax on the $1 million (£666,670) plus he’d earned from the show and subsequent TV appearances.
He was released from a facility in Morgantown, West Virginia on 11 May (09) for good behaviour and put on supervised release for 90 days.
Hatch asked to leave for Samoa next month (Aug09) for a series to mark the 10th anniversary edition of the reality show, arguing the money he earns could pay his tax obligations - but U.S. District Judge William Smith has turned down the request.
Hatch is currently serving out his sentence at his home in Newport, Rhode Island.

Former TV SUPERMAN DEAN CAIN has laughed off rumours he’s dating LEANN RIMES, just months after the married singer/actress was forced to deny allegations of an affair with actor EDDIE CIBRIAN.

HARRY POTTER star DANIEL RADCLIFFE has fulfilled his schoolboy dreams - with a kiss from former model SOPHIE DAHL.
The actor admits the British beauty was his favourite pin-up during his adolescent years, and even joked he wanted to marry her.
He was delighted when he received a peck on the cheek from the six-foot tall (1.82 metre) blonde at the premiere of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in 2007 - and was thrilled when she later wrote to him after an appearance at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards.
Radcliffe says, "She was at the fifth (Potter) film premiere and kissed me on the cheek. I turned round to her and said, ‘Thank you, because you’ve given me closure on my adolescent years.’ "I got a note from her congratulating me on how I’d presented an award at the BAFTAs. I think we know what this means - she wants to marry me!"

EMMA WATSON has defended her former HARRY POTTER co-star ROBERT PATTINSON’s budding reputation as a Hollywood playboy, insisting the pair was only friends during filming.
Twilight hunk Pattinson’s current onscreen love interest Kristen Stewart has also been fighting off rumours they became a couple after appearing onscreen together last year (08) in the vampire love story.
But Watson insists the 23-year-old British actor was a gentleman onset when they worked on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

BRITNEY SPEARS has choreographed a new dance routine for her CIRCUS world tour - in a bid to breathe new life into the show.
The Toxic hitmaker has performed nearly 100 concerts since heading onto the road in March (09) and admits singing the same songs can grow tiresome.
So to keep herself and her dancers on their toes, Spears has dreamed up the choreography for her track Mannequin, and debuted the routine at her gig in Paris, France on 05 July (09).
She tells Entertainment Tonight, "We have a song called Mannequin that we’re adding to the show, which I’m really, really excited about, so it should be interesting. We have to update (the show) or it gets really boring." The 27 year old also insists she is excited to take the concert back to North America, where it kicked off, after tweaking the setlist.
Spears adds, "We’ve changed up a couple of (other) numbers in the show, so that’s going to make it a lot more fun for me and the dancers. It’ll be cool."

LL COOL J is putting down the microphone and taking a temporary hiatus from rapping to star in upcoming U.S. TV drama NCIS: LOS ANGELES.
The 41-year-old MC has continued to rap for decades as his acting career boomed, starting with minor television roles in the mid-’80s.
But he insists it will be a while before he’s making new albums of his own again, even though he may produce for other artists - because he feels he has so much more to learn from his new role.
He says, "It’s not a coronation, it’s the beginning of a journey… You’re joining one of the most popular franchises on the number one network. I tried a couple of things that didn’t feel like they were ready. When it feels right, it feels right…
"It’s fun to do new stuff. It’s fun to be the new kid on the block. Instead of being the Godfather of Rap when you walk into the room, you’re the new guy with the new show.
"Acting is a wonderful, wonderful exercise and a wonderful thing to experience. It’s like playing with G.I. Joes when you’re a kid and imagining you’re in a battle. That’s real fun."

The son of late Grammy-nominated gospel singer REVD. TIMOTHY WRIGHT has inherited his father’s place as the leader of a New York church.
John David Wright, 30, was named pastor at Brooklyn’s Grace Tabernacle Christian Center during a service attended by some 300 parishioners on Sunday (12Jul09).
He replaces his father, known as the Godfather of Gospel, who was 61 when he died in April (09) following a horrific July 2008 car crash in Pennsylvania.
Wright founded the church five years before his mainstream success. His albums Come Thou Almighty King and Been There Done That were nominated for Grammy Awards for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album following their releases in 1994 and 1999 respectively.

KATY PERRY wrote her hit song I KISSED A GIRL to rebel against her strict religious childhood.
The star’s mother is an evangelical Christian preacher and has admitted she isn’t a fan of some of her daughter’s outrageous lyrics, which she has branded "shameful".
She was banned from swearing as a child and followed strict rules as she grew up - so she wreaked revenge with the controversial lyrics to her breakthrough hit.
Perry says, "My religious upbringing was comically strict - even the Dirt Devil vacuum cleaner was banned. In our house, no one was allowed to refer to devilled eggs. We had to call them angelic eggs.
"We were never allowed to swear. I’d get into trouble just for saying ‘Hell no’. If you dropped a hammer on your toe in our house you had to say something like ‘Jiminy Christmas’. The only music we were allowed to listen to was gospel. No wonder I rebelled."

Tragedy struck at the Exit Festival in Serbia at the weekend (09-12Jul09) when a British man plunged to his death in a horror fall.
Anthony Fisk toppled from the wall of the Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, Serbia on Friday (10Jul09). The 22 year old died from his injuries in hospital the following day.
Police have confirmed they are treating the death as "non-suspicious", while British authorities are providing help for Fisk’s family.
A spokesperson for the U.K.’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office says, "We can confirm the death of a British national in Serbia following a fall at a music festival and we are providing consular assistance to the family." The rock festival, which this year featured performances from Lily Allen, Patti Smith, and Moby, attracted more than 190,000 fans.

New York City officials will pay tribute to murdered Hollywood screenwriter ADRIENNE SHELLY with a memorial just yards from where she was strangled.
The Waitress writer was found dead in her New York apartment in 2006. Construction worker and illegal immigrant Diego Pillco later confessed to the killing and was sentenced to 25 years behind bars last year (08).
The Parks Department has put the finishing touches to a memorial garden in the West Village’s Abingdon Square Park - across the street from the apartment where Shelly died, reports the New York Post.
A plot of flowers which Shelly’s widower, Andy Ostroy, helped design will be dedicated to Shelly with a plaque on 3 August (09).

Actor/director ELI ROTH has ditched plans to adapt author STEPHEN KING’s thriller CELL for the big screen.
The moviemaker had been linked to the project, about an artist who struggles to reconnect with his son after a strange cell phone network broadcast turns humans into vicious animals.
But Roth now reveals he’s quit the film, citing creative differences with studio executives Harvey and Bob Weinstein.
However, Roth - who also stars in the Weinstein-backed Quentin Tarantino film Inglourious Basterds - insists the split was amicable.
He tells movie website ShockTillYouDrop.com, "I kind of quietly walked away from that one… There was just sort of a difference in opinion on how to make the film and what the story should be, and there’s a different direction the studio wants to go with it.
"It was very friendly because it’s the Weinsteins, they made Inglourious Basterds and we’re all friends. I said, ‘I’m not really interested in doing the film this way. You guys go ahead and I’m going to make my own films.’" And Roth admits he only wants to work on future scripts he’s penned himself: "I’ve also learned that I really am only interested in directing original stories that I write, that’s another thing I learned through that whole process."

An onlooker said: "Amy looked tired but happy to be home. MICHAEL JACKSON’s sister LA TOYA is convinced she knows the group who killed her superstar sibling - and has vowed to go public with the murderers’ names if the truth doesn’t come out in court.
The King of Pop’s sibling alleges a number of people took advantage of the singer and killed him to gain control of his music publishing catalogue, which she claims is worth more than $1 billion (£666 million).
Jackson has already informed the authorities of who she believes is responsible - and she has promised to reveal the culprits to the world.
She says, "If justice is not served in the courts, I will name them myself.
"I have made it clear to the police who is responsible. They must ensure, for Michael’s sake, that the outcome is right." JON VOIGHT has sent his estranged daughter ANGELINA JOLIE a copy of their movie LOOKIN’ TO GET OUT in the hope of restoring their strained relationship, according to reports.
Jolie was just four when she appeared alongside her actor father in the 1982 comedy, which flopped at the box office but was recently issued for release for the first time.
Now Britain’s Daily Express newspaper alleges Voight has gifted his Oscar-winning daughter with the forgotten film in the hope of repairing their relationship - which Jolie appeared to end after her dad spoke out about her mental health just before she adopted her son Maddox in 2002.
Voight says, "Angelina’s scene is a very key piece in this film. She was wonderful."

THE KINKS star RAY DAVIES is pooling together rockers ROD STEWART, RONNIE WOOD and PAOLO NUTINI to score a chart hit for charity.
Wood and Stewart, who played together in The Faces, are heading into the studio with Scottish singer Nutini to write a new song - with the proceeds going to one of the organisations the former Kinks frontman supports.
Nutini explains, "There is talk of us writing a song together and that would be an honour. We are going to write a song for a charity project Ray is involved in."

MICHAEL JACKSON’s life will be celebrated in Las Vegas with a special tribute show on 29 August (09) - the day the superstar would have turned 51.
The benefit concert will feature performances from castmembers of the current stage shows on the Sin City Strip, including Jersey Boys actor Erich Bergen.
Other stars are expected to be announced before the August event.
Proceeds from the show, which will be held in The Pearl Theatre at the Palms Hotel and Casino, will be donated to the VH1 Save The Music Foundation, an initiative Jackson contributed to that helps improve music education in public schools.
The Thriller legend died after suffering a cardiac arrest in Los Angeles on 25 June (09) at the age of 50.
