Beloved U.S. singer and movie icon DORIS DAY has lost her singing voice - and fears she’ll never get it back.
The Pillow Talk star, 85, blames the damp conditions in her decaying Carmel, California home for destroying her once beautiful voice, which helped her score a number of hits in the 1950s and 1960s.
The reclusive star called into a U.S. radio show during a birthday celebration of her career earlier this month (Apr09) to talk about her croaky voice, explaining, "I wish I could sing. I’m still hoarse. I’ve been hoarse for a year. I went to my throat specialist and he said I was clear, but I can’t sing because of the hoarseness.
"It’s the dampness in the area (Carmel)." Day also told her hometown radio station, Miracle 63, that her once-busy schedule had robbed her of a lot of precious memories.
She explained she was so busy learning lines and song lyrics that she had no time to store away magic moments.
During the rare interview, the Winter Wonderland singer confessed she couldn’t remember the surname of one-time duet partner John Denver and had no recollection of TV appearances she made with Bing Crosby and Alan Ladd.

WHITESNAKE frontman DAVID COVERDALE has fired back at RAINBOW rocker JOE LYNN TURNER’s accusations he mimes onstage.
In a recent interview with Spain’s TheMetalCircus.com, Turner claimed he stumbled upon the rock legend’s little secret during a festival in Finland last summer (08).
He said, "We were on the same festival (bill) as Whitesnake, and I couldn’t believe he was using these tapes - for lead singing! Not just backgrounds, but lead!" "I couldn’t believe it, because he was always one of my favourite singers." But now Coverdale has angrily responded to Turner’s allegations in a statement issued to rock news website Blabbermouth.net.
He fumes, "I am shocked, very disappointed and surprised by Mr. Turner’s misleading and completely untrue observations he felt it necessary to discuss in a recent interview. Whatever his motives, they are disturbing, to say the least.
"I do not ‘mime’ in concert. I never have and I never will. I am David Coverdale. My career spans almost 40 successful years and I have worked with some of the finest musicians in contemporary music and in all that time I have never pretended to sing to tapes when I am performing in front of a paying crowd.
"I have no idea how anyone who has seen me working live in concert, or is remotely connected to the music business, can even suggest such an odious thing. I have seen the purported video of me supposedly ‘miming’, and all I can say is he and anyone else who believes this nonsense should look more closely." And Coverdale concludes his rant by adding, "I have no idea why Mr. Turner has launched this foolishness, but I ask that it stop now. It has no merit, serves no purpose and is a total waste of precious time. No apology is necessary as I have no desire in any way, shape or form to have any communication with him. He should know better.
"Next he’ll be accusing me of wearing a wig on stage."

The EAGLES star DON HENLEY is suing California politician CHARLES DEVORE after the state assemblyman used the rocker’s music as part of his campaign march - and altered lyrics without permission.
Henley claims the Republican ripped him off by revamping two of his popular hits in his fight to unseat California Senator Barbara Boxer last year (08).
In his federal lawsuit, obtained by TMZ.com, Henley claims DeVore added his own lyrics to The Boys of Summer, in which he took aim at President Barack Obama. DeVore reportedly posted the video on various social networking sites.
YouTube.com agreed to remove the track after Henley complained, but DeVore reposted it.
According to TMZ.com, YouTube bosses told Henley they would only remove it a second time if the rock star filed a lawsuit.
Henley also claims DeVore ripped off his song All She Wants to Do Is Dance by creating lyrics that attacked Senator Boxer.
The rocker is asking for damages and the removal of DeVore’s videos from the Internet.

British supermodel AGYNESS DEYN went public with her new romance at the Coachella festival in California on Friday (17Apr09) - kissing and cuddling with PHANTOM PLANET frontman ALEX GREENWALD at every opportunity.
The couple appeared smitten with each other in the VIP area of the three day festival, just a month after Deyn split from The Strokes star Albert Hammond, Jr.
Deyn and Greenwald tried to keep their romance low-key when they were spotted out and about in New York last week (ends17Apr09) - but they didn’t seem to care who saw their public displays of affection at Coachella.
One festivalgoer tells WENN, "They were very happy and obviously very much in love. The way they were with one another, it was like they were all alone. I don’t think they saw much of the festival." They weren’t the only pairing showing love at Coachella - Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal were also among the celebrities checking out the likes of performers Sir Paul McCartney, Morrissey, The Killers and The Cure over the three days event.
Other movie stars spotted on site included Chloe Sevigny, Kate Bosworth and Scott Speedman. David Hasselhof, Paris and Nicky Hilton and burlesque star Dita Von Teese also enjoyed the festival.

A Raptor fighter jet used in TV series BATTLESTAR GALACTICA has failed to sell at auction.
The plane was among a haul of items TV bosses decided to sell off on website eBay.com after the sci-fi series ended recently, but even though bidding topped $28,000 (£18,700), it wasn’t enough to meet the reserve.
NBC/Universal bosses now plan to sell the Raptor at a live auction in Pasadena, California in May (09).

Celebrity socialite KIM KARDASHIAN will be dodging the cameras for some time - after a botched sunning session left her with unwanted tan lines.
The reality TV star posted a blog and photos on her Twitter.com account, expressing her dismay at the unusual marks.
Kardashian later pleaded for help on the site, to which she received a number of replies from stars such as Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs and The Hills star Heidi Montag.
Kardashian writes, "PLEASE HELP ME! I am so sunburned! I fell asleep with huge glasses on yesterday! This tan line is not ok!!!" She adds, "I’m going to have to hide from cameras for days. I usually never get red, I always get dark. It hurts! "Do u guys have any remedies I can try to help ease the pain and get rid of the redness?… I will never wear sunglasses when sunbathing again!" Diddy replies, "Yo i think its HILARIOUS that Kim Kardashian just posted this!! This made my night!! Shes funny!!" And Montag writes, "Nooooo (sic) you can NOT go back into the sun!!!!! Gay British actor JOHN BARROWMAN is ready for a child with long-term partner SCOTT GILL - and feels he will make a great father.
The Torchwood star, 42, has been with 41-year-old Gill for 15 years, and the couple is building a new home in Cardiff, Wales big enough to cater for a large brood.
He says, "We’re going to have six bedrooms in it and we feel like we’ve got a lot to offer. A family unit is what you make a family unit.
"I have got broody over the last year or so and I think it’s partially because I’m doing the show Tonight’s The Night, where I am getting involved with a lot of families.
"I’m a big family man and I have this feeling I would be a good dad. I am ready for it." Barrowman shot to fame with his role as Captain Jack Harkness in cult British sci-fi show Dr Who, which earned him the lead role in spin-off series Torchwood. Lesbian drama THE L WORD, hit movie MILK and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES all picked up major honours at the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) Media Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday (18Apr09).
Comedienne Kathy Griffin was presented with the Vanguard Award and Ellen DeGeneres was honoured with the Outstanding Talk Show Episode for the programme she dedicated to her same sex marriage to actress Portia De Rossi.
The L Word won a Special Recognition prize, Milk was named Outstanding Film and Desperate Housewives Outstanding Comedy Series.
The Outstanding Drama Series honour went to Brothers & Sisters.

A Florida woman who was hit by a stray golfball whacked by movie star BILL MURRAY has asked the actor for a signed copy of his CADDYSHACK DVD as payback for her injuries.
Murray’s hooked a tee shot at a golf event in Florida on Friday (17Apr09) and the ball accidentally hit spectator Gail DiMaggio as she watched from her course-side lawn.
DiMaggio had to be taken to hospital, where she received treatment and stitches to her temple, but she’s far from teed off about her Murray moment at the Outback Pro-Am in Tampa Bay; she asked the funnyman for a signed copy of his cult golf comedy.
Murray, who dashed to DiMaggio’s home after realising he’d hit her, said, "She was overjoyed when she saw me because she said she had come out to see me and her husband had just said, ‘I hope he hits it over here’."

DUMB & DUMBERER: WHEN HARRY MET LLOYD star ERIC CHRISTIAN OLSEN has missed out on playing unlikely superhero RALPH HINKLEY in a new movie - because the money ran out on the project.
The actor has revealed he was all set to play Hinkley’s Greatest American Hero, but the film’s budget was so big cameras won’t roll on it.
In the 1980s TV series, which was to be adapted to the big screen as an Olsen project, William Katt played Hinkley, a schoolteacher who discovers a magical super-suit and becomes a hero.
Olsen tells MovieHole.net, "I booked that movie, but they didn’t have financing in place. Because the budget was so huge they couldn’t get the money.
"It was a really funny script - about a reluctant hero who gets in way over his head - and it had a lot of really cool stunts… Then we get a phonecall just as we were starting the deal to say they hadn’t got the financing. I’m not attached anymore.
"Never got to that place - only got to reading the original contracts; no super-suit."

MEL GIBSON is hoping God is on his side as he prepares for a bitter divorce battle with his wife - the movie star jetted in for services at his family chapel in Malibu, California on Sunday (19Apr09).
The actor has been living at his retreat in Costa Rica ever since news of the divorce went public at the beginning of last week (beg13Apr09), but he flew back to Malibu to attend Mass at the Church of the Holy Family over the weekend.
Dressed smartly in a suit, a tanned and relaxed-looking Gibson drank coffee with church guests following the service.
Gibson has been entertaining a mystery blonde at his home in Costa Rica this week, but it appears he flew back to Malibu alone.
The actor’s estranged wife Robyn cited "irreconcilable differences" in her divorce documents, which were filed on Monday (13Apr09). Gibson’s legal response, filed on the same day, revealed the couple had split in 2006, a month after his much-publicised drink driving arrest.

Troubled singer AMY WINEHOUSE sobbed and beat her chest when she heard that her estranged husband BLAKE FIELDER-CIVIL is to be a father.
The singer was told the news in a hotel bar in St Lucia where she has been holidaying since March (09).
At first she assumed it was Fielder-Civil’s 17-year-old girlfriend Francesca Moralee who is pregnant. Winehouse was seen weeping and banging her chest as she told pals, "I’m not sad you know, I’m excited. I knew Blake and his new girlfriend Francesca would be able to have a normal life." But the Back to Black hitmaker became angry when she discovered it is 31-year-old former heroin addict Gilleen Morris who is expecting Fielder-Civil’s child after she had a brief romance with him at the Phoenix Futures Rehab Centre in Sheffield, England in February (09).
According to British tabloid the News of the World, Winehouse wailed: "That better be a mistake or I’ll beat his head in. Oh great, he’s had it with some… I don’t wanna know, don’t tell me anymore." After crying and telling bar staff of her woes, Winehouse was then heard saying she is keen to start a family and wants twins.
British newspaper The Mail on Sunday reports that since finding out the news, Winehouse is considering adopting St Lucian child.
Her spokesman says, "Amy was talking about adopting in the context of looking after children on the island, perhaps through some kind of music and education-based project."

NICOLE KIDMAN is competing for the film rights to a novel about an asylum seeker as she is desperate to play the lead in a screen adaptation.
The Other Hand by British author Chris Cleave tells the story of a 14-year-old African who visits the U.K. in search of an English widow called Sarah.
According to British newspaper The Sunday Times, Kidman recently read the novel on a flight between Los Angeles and Australia and is so eager to play the role of Sarah that she is competing with a number of film studios to secure the film rights to the book.
The last time Australia-born Kidman played an English woman she scooped an Oscar for best actress for her portrayal of novelist Virginia Woolf in The Hours.

ROD STEWART banishes his elder children to a guest house when he visits his Los Angeles home - so he can enjoy time with wife PENNY LANCASTER and their son ALISTAIR.
Stewart and his model wife live in Essex, England most of the year, but often visit their Hollywood home so the singer can catch up with his elder offspring - Kimberly, 29, Sean, 28 and 21 year old Ruby.
But when the Maggie May hitmaker is in town, the children pack up their bags and head out of the main house to make their dad’s stay more enjoyable.
Sean tells Britain’s Mail on Sunday newspaper, "I can’t complain at all this, can I? It’s a nice guest house. And while I know some people won’t understand Dad putting us older kids out here while he’s in the main house, to us it makes sense.
"He and Penny have their own family now and the big house is very much their home. When they are in town, they want their privacy. It’s no big deal.
"Dad is spending more and more time in Britain because Penny wants to be near her family. He started building the guest house when Penny was pregnant. He wants her to feel the main house is their family home when they are in LA. And who wants their kids from previous relationships living on top of them when they are with their new family? "When he is coming back to town, we other kids get a call, normally from his assistant, telling us, ‘Dad is in town, clear the big house’. That’s just how it works. We go over there for movie nights and for meals. But it’s nice for them to have their privacy and for us to have ours."

Hollywood star HUGH JACKMAN is rarely recognised by fans - and often has to convince people he really is a famous actor.
The Australian shot to fame in 2000 comic book movie X-Men, and has gone on to film three of the superhero sequels. He also hosted this year’s (09) Academy Awards ceremony.
But Jackman insists he still doesn’t receive the same kind of adoration as other stars - as members of the public never know who he is.
He says, "I’ve been stood in the street with people arguing with me over whether I am that guy from X-Men. I’ve had to show people my (driving) licence to prove who I am." And Jackman admits he even gets mistaken for British actor Rupert Everett and action man Vin Diesel.
He adds, "I was in Moscow recently promoting a movie and this woman came in delivering my breakfast, and she said, ‘Hello, I just wanted to say you are my favourite actor. For me, My Best Friend’s Wedding was just incredible,’ and I said, ‘Yeah it’s a great movie but I’m not in it.’ And she said, ‘No, you are in it. I’ve seen it 100 times.’ She went on and on, and finally I convinced her that I was in X-Men but she then thought I was in XXX, which was Vin Diesel."

DJ CHRIS HOLMES was personally asked to perform ahead of SIR PAUL McCARTNEY at the Coachella festival on Friday night (17Apr09) - by the BEATLES legend himself.
Holmes met McCartney at Radiohead’s Grammy Awards party in Los Angeles in February (09), and the two hit it off over their fondness for dance music duo Daft Punk.
He says, "The next day he called up (producer) Nigel Godrich and asked if he could get my phone number." Holmes’ 20-minute pre-Macca set featured a selection of soul versions of Beatles songs.
McCartney opened his set with Wings classic Jet and followed it up with Drive My Car and Only Mama Knows.
