The Doubt star, 34, admits money was tight in her household - but she refused to let financial woes limit her wardrobe, so she created look-a-like fashions at home.
She tells W magazine, "We were defined by the clothes we bought at the mall.
"If I didn�t get things on clearance, I wasn�t getting them. I would make fake Guess jeans by buying a cheaper brand with a triangle label and then cutting it off so you could still see the triangle outline. It�s so sad that I did that! But I really wanted to be one of those girls.�

The Notebook star keeps a low profile by living in her native Canada in a rustic home close to her parents.
But McAdams, 30, reveals she plans to take her quiet life one step further.
She tells America’s Marie Claire magazine, "I kind of fancy living in the woods for two years. Not by myself - but I do have a side of me that would just love to be stuck in the woods and have to stick it out and be really resourceful."

Argentinian director JORGE PRELORAN has lost his 10-year battle with prostate cancer at the age of 75.
The documentary maker passed away on 28 March (09) in Los Angeles.
Preloran enjoyed a career spanning four decades and is celebrated as a pioneer in the field of ethnographic documentary film - the study of human societies.
He is best known for movies such as 1983’s My Aunt Nora, and 1979’s Luther Metke at 94, as well as the TV series Patagonia - In Search of Its Remote Past in 1992.
He spent 18 years as a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) teaching at the School of Theater, Film and Television, before retiring in 1994.
Preloran was honoured with the lifetime achievement award at the Mar del Plata Film Festival in Argentina in 2005, and his religious project Imaginero was recently named by movie critics as one of the top 10 Argentine films of all time, reports Variety.com.

GOSSIP GIRL star ED WESTWICK has reportedly come under fire from TV bosses for gaining weight - because they’ve had to buy an entire new wardrobe to accommodate his expanding waistline.
The 21-year-old British actor, who plays womanising Chuck Bass on the hit show, has been living large since moving to New York to film the series.
And the show’s stylists are urging producers to intervene, reports the New York Daily News.
An on-set source says, â��Ed has been gaining a lot of weight - not just around the waist, but through the whole body. First, the costume department had to buy him new, bigger pants. Then, his shirts and jackets got way too snug. The costumers even requested that producers talk to Ed - they don’t want Chuck to be fat!â��

Teen star MILEY CYRUS wants to land some grown-up film roles - but only if they fit her Christian beliefs.
The Hannah Montana star, 16, is eyeing her future and admits she is keen to take on more "edgy" parts.
But the regular churchgoer is adamant she will turn down roles that could possibly compromise her religious upbringing.
She tells MTV News, "I want to play edgy roles, but I think that my faith is obviously very important to me, so there’s a way of doing that. Then also being the person that you want to be and not letting your roles take over your life, and I don’t want to do anything wrong with my roles, because it’s a job." And Cyrus admits she is looking to emulate her Hollywood role model - Silence of the Lambs star Jodie Foster.
She adds: "She’s actually one of the nicest people, so if I was gonna go after anyone, it might be Jodie Foster."

A doctor who operated on KANYE WEST’s mother DONDA a day before she died has given up his medical licence.
Under-fire Dr Jan Adams was facing a litany of official complaints questioning his fitness to practise, including two drink-drive convictions and failure to pay child support.
His record also contains four malpractice judgements against him between 2001 and 2007.
But he has surrendered his licence rather than fight his case, according to a Medical Board of California official.
Dr Adams performed surgery on Donda West in November 2007, but she died of heart failure the following day.
Candis Cohen, spokeswoman for the Medical Board of California, tells People.com, "A series of complaints were filed against Mr Adams, but he chose to surrender his licence instead of contest them."

DANIEL CRAIG’s portrayal of superspy JAMES BOND has impressed film fans - CASINO ROYALE has been crowned the best ever movie remake in a new poll.
The 2006 thriller beat Brad Pitt and George Clooney’s crime caper Ocean’s Eleven to the top spot in a quiz of 1,500 fans.
Peter Jackson’s 2005 blockbuster King Kong rounded out the top three in the survey, by movie rental website Lovefilm.com.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN filmmaker GORE VERBINSKI has dealt the franchise a further blow - he’s followed in the footsteps of KEIRA KNIGHTLEY by pulling out of the forthcoming instalment in the blockbuster series.
Knightley announced last month (Mar09) she has turned down the chance to reprise her role as aristocrat-turned-swashbuckler Elizabeth Swann.
And now Verbinski - who directed the hugely successful first three films - has informed Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer that he won�t be returning to helm the latest offering.
He tells Variety, "I had a fantastic time bringing ‘Pirates’ to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team. I’m looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future." The Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy has taken more than $2.6 billion (£1.7 billion) in box office receipts across the world.
Johnny Depp has already agreed to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the fourth film, which is due to start shooting in 2010.

Scottish rockers FRANZ FERDINAND turned down a lucrative advertising deal and the chance to become famous in America - because they didn’t want to be known for promoting fast food.
The Take Me Out hitmakers were approached by bosses at a famous Mexican restaurant chain, who wanted to use one of their songs in a promotional campaign across the U.S.
But the band refused to sign the deal - because they feared a backlash if they were associated with a takeaway restaurant.
Frontman Alex Kapranos tells Absolute Radio, "They asked if they could use our song Bite Hard and I think the idea was people were going to be biting into their chili enchilada while the song was in the background. It would be like going to McDonald’s or something like that. It just didn’t seem right."

The former manager of Scottish rockers the BAY CITY ROLLERS has died, at the age of 70.
Tam Paton, who managed the group at the height of their fame in the 1970s, passed away on Wednesday night (08April09) in his Edinburgh, Scotland home after reportedly suffering a heart attack.
He oversaw the band for 11 years as they enjoyed huge success in the U.K. and abroad, with hits including Shang-A-Lang and Bye, Bye Baby.
Paton had been dogged by personal problems throughout his life - in 1982 he was convicted of gross indecency and spent three years in jail. He was also at the centre of child abuse allegations in 2003 before he was later convicted on charges of drug dealing in 2004.

Welsh singer DUFFY is sick of the single life - and is desperately searching for a boyfriend.
The Mercy hitmaker admits her hectic schedule doesn’t give her time to focus on romance, but she remains hopeful she will eventually be able to snare herself a man.
She says, "I’m stone cold single at the moment, and it’s not much fun I can tell you. I have been travelling and working so much over the last few years that I haven’t had time to sleep, never mind have a boyfriend." And Duffy fears she may have to resort to internet dating to find herself a potential mate.

A Massachusetts cop who urinated over fans at a METALLICA concert has pleaded guilty to a series of charges in connection with the incident.
Joseph Houston was accused of exposing his privates and harassing a family after downing several beers during the gig in Boston in January (09).
He was discharged from the police force following the incident, and faced charges of assault and battery, open and gross lewdness, and trespassing.
But in a plea deal this week (begs06Apr09), Houston agreed to admit to certain facts and a finding of guilty on the trespassing charge and the assault and battery charge.
He avoided the felony charge of open and gross lewdness, pleading guilty to a lesser charge of assault and indecent exposure.
As part of the deal, Houston must undergo alcohol treatment and cannot contact the family he terrorised. He must also repay his victims the $2,631 (£1,800) they spent to attend the concert.
Jake Wark, spokesman for Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley, says: "If he abides by those conditions for the duration of the continuance, the cases will be dismissed. If he doesn’t, then they go to trial." Houston’s attorney, Thomas Drechsler, said the ex-cop has now "put the matter behind him".

Country singer JOHN RICH has filed a defamation lawsuit against a former contestant on U.S. reality TV show NASHVILLE STAR.
Rich - an ex-judge on the country music talent show - filed papers on Monday (06Apr09) claiming Jared Ashley, who featured in the fourth season of the programme, had defamed him.
Rich claims Ashley entered his private club without permission last month (09) and had to be removed by security. The star insists Ashley later falsely stated during a radio interview that Rich had hit him that night.
The star is seeking seeking unspecified damages in the suit.
