STAR TREK director J.J. ABRAMS has dismissed reports WILLIAM SHATNER will return to the franchise for the sequel of his new movie - because his Captain Kirk character is dead.
Despite protestations from Shatner himself and hardcore Trekkers, Abrams decided not to use the original Kirk in his new film, explaining it would have irked film fans who saw his character die.
Abrams says, "His character died in one of the (Star Trek) films and we wanted to be consistent.
"Everyone says - the Trek fans - if you’re gonna do a Trek film, you need to be consistent. He died." Abrams reiterates he did offer Shatner a role in his new film, but explained it could only be a cameo.
He adds, "It was clear that he didn’t wanna just do a cameo, so to create a story which was in the movie, it would have been reworking everything (sic)." But Abrams insists he didn’t purposefully snub the original Kirk: "I love William Shatner."

SIDEWAYS star THOMAS HADEN CHURCH didn’t have to dig too deep to play a miserable janitor in his new movie - his fiancee walked out on him just before filming started.
The actor plays a fallen guy who returns to his hometown to care for a sick ex-girlfriend in Don McKay - and the sadness in his character was for real.
His partner, Mia Church, ended their romance and took off with the couple’s daughter Cody as Church was preparing for the part.
He tells WENN, "I had a significant relationship and we were engaged, and that broke up, literally, about a month before we started shooting the movie.
"I was very concerned that there would be an emotional vacancy that would not work for the character; it actually helped me with the loneliness." The actor is confident he won’t be alone for long - thanks to his remarkable body: "I weight train five days a week and I’m a cattle rancher by trade in Texas which requires physical activity. I try to stay in shape.
"I didn’t realise I looked that fit but a number of women said something to me at a screening and there was a girl, who was 20 years younger than me - probably 25 - and she gave me her phone number! She was cute too!"

American actress ERINN HAYES has given birth to her second daughter, a baby girl called LILAH GRACE.
The star of TV shows Worst Week and Kitchen Confidential welcomed baby Lilah on Wednesday (29Apr09).

Actor ED BURNS and his supermodel wife CHRISTY TURLINGTON are backing a new campaign to find a bone marrow donor for a little boy who attends the same pre-school as their three-year-old son FINN.
Burns found out about four-year-old Kai Anderson when he spotted a poster on the school’s wall.
Anderson suffers an aggressive form of cancer called Philadelphia Chromosome-Positive Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. He was diagnosed just a year after his father was found to be suffering from Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a similarly rare form of cancer.
Burns has vowed to publicise Anderson’s plight, telling People.com, "It broke my heart. I went home and told my wife. We said, ‘What can we do to help this family?’ She called a friend and got more details. We wanted to do whatever we could." And the couple is helping to encourage New Yorkers to attend a donor drive for Kai on 2 May (09) at the Montessori School of Manhattan.
Burns adds, "The Tribeca Film Festival is going on that same day, so thousands of people will be in the neighbourhood. We’re trying to get them to take a few minutes of their day to have their cheek swabbed so that they can become potential donors."

Former supermodel LAUREN HUTTON’s recent vacation in Hawaii almost ended in tragedy after she collided with a fellow surfer.
The 65 year old was paddling in the shallow waters off the coast of Hawaii earlier this month (Apr09) when a teenage surfer inadvertently slammed his board into her knee - and accidentally dragged her out to sea.
Hutton panicked when she found herself unable to take control of the situation.
She tells the National Enquirer, "I couldn’t stand or swim. I was screaming, ‘Save me! Save me!’" But Hutton had a lucky escape when the surfer heard her cries for help and carried her back to the safety of the shore, where she was treated for cuts and bruises and a damaged knee ligament.
Hutton is no stranger to near-death accidents - she fell from a motorbike in October 2000 and suffered multiple leg and arm fractures, broken ribs, a punctured lung, cuts and bruises.

DIANE KRUGER is so smitten with boyfriend JOSHUA JACKSON, she’s emigrating to be closer to him.
The pair has been living together in New York City, where Jackson shoots TV show The Fringe.

JENNIFER GARNER has finally revealed the source of her second child SERAPHINA’s name - it was chosen by her three-year-old daughter VIOLET.
The Alias star and husband Ben Affleck have been bombarded with questions by the press since they decided to call their three-month-old Seraphina Rose, which means "little angel".
Garner admits she has been reluctant to answer, because the couple were bullied into choosing the name by their older daughter, who had a premonition early on in the actress’ pregnancy.
Garner says, "Violet, ever since she figured out that I was pregnant, she said, ‘Oh that’s Sara.’ And we didn’t know if it was a boy or a girl, so we’re like, ‘Oh, we’ll see.’ We didn’t know where she came up with it but she said Sara consistently the whole time. And we kept saying she’s not going to name the kid, she’s a baby. We’ll decide and we’ll figure it out." But the couple were finally able to compromise with their toddler on a name that made the entire family happy.
She adds, "A week into it (after giving birth) we hadn’t decided. So we just went with what Violet wanted… and the thing we liked about it was it meant angel in every language. She gets her way sometimes."

Actress ANNA FARIS has shunned the typical bridal bootcamp workouts - because she wants to "fatten up" before her summer (09) wedding to CHRIS PRATT.

BRITNEY SPEARS’ ex KEVIN FEDERLINE is moving into a new child-friendly California home, so he can better care for the couple’s sons.
The former dancer and wannabe rapper was handed full custody of three-year-old Sean Preston and two-year-old Jayden James after Spears suffered a breakdown in January last year (08).
The singer is allowed access to the tots, but while they live with him, Federline wants them to have the best environment possible - so he’s selling up his $7,500 (£5,170)-a-month rented pad in Tarzana, and replacing it with a more family-oriented home in nearby Chatsworth.
A source tells OK! magazine, "He can rent a very kid-friendly ranch house there for half of what he’s paying now."

BRITNEY SPEARS’ former manager SAM LUTFI is appealing a restraining order that bans him from going near the pop star for three years.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Aviva Bobb issued the order against Lutfi and his legal associate Jon Eardley on Tuesday (28Apr09).
Both men must stay at least 100 yards away from Britney, her two sons, and her family members’ homes.
Under the terms of the new order, they cannot contact the singer via phone, mail or email.
Spears’ father Jamie filed the restraining order request in January (09) after learning Lutfi had attempted to contact his daughter over Christmas (08), going so far as to smuggle a cell phone to the singer in a hotel.
Planning the appeal, Lutfi’s lawyer’s told reporters earlier this week, "Never before in the history of the world has a restraining order been granted as a result of someone answering someone else’s cries for help.
"The evidence showed it was Britney Spears reaching out to Mr. Lutfi and all he did was help her get a lawyer." Lutfi has now officially filed his appeal, reports TMZ.com. The motion comes two months after he filed a lawsuit against the Spears family for defamation and battery.
The singer last month (Mar09) obtained a permanent restraining order against her former boyfriend, paparazzo Adnan Ghalib, which will be in place for three years.

Radio station staff in Austria have apologised for duping hundreds of BEYONCE KNOWLES fans - by taking a look-a-like of the singer on a VIP tour of Vienna.
The Crazy In Love hitmaker came under fire from bosses at the Austrian capital’s Albertina art museum after they accused her of shunning a planned visit on Tuesday (28Apr09) and sending a doppelganger in her place.
But it has now emerged the incident was a radio station prank - and the museum chiefs were among hundreds of people fooled by the stunt.
Staff at Austria’s Kronehit Radio hired a Beyonce look-a-like to coincide with the singer’s Vienna concert on Tuesday.
They took her to various tourist attractions and famous locations in the city, sent her on a shopping trip - and then phoned the Albertina posing as her management to arrange an exclusive visit.
Andrea Hilber, marketing manager at Kronehit Radio, confirmed the station was responsible for the stunt, adding: "We’ll call the Albertina to say we meant no harm. It was a great museum tour."

Rapper JUELZ SANTANA is refusing to close the door on his friendship with DIPLOMATS frontman CAM’RON, insisting he’s "still open" to working with his group’s estranged crew member.
The group has been in disarray since Cam’ron fell out with Diplomats stars Santana, Jim Jones and Freekey Zekey following the 2006 release of his album Killa Season, amid allegations of shady business dealings.
Cam’ron recently ruled out a Diplomats reunion for a new collaborative project - but Santana is not ready to put an end to their professional relationship just yet, insisting he is no longer angry about the issues that originally split the group.
He says, "I’m still open to doing Diplomat projects with Cam.

A concert headlined by rapper YOUNG JEEZY at the University of Delaware has been scrapped by school officials after an outbreak of swine flu in the state.
Jeezy and rap newcomer Drake were due to play a show at the Bob Carpenter Center on Thursday night (30Apr09), but the gig was called off on Wednesday (29Apr09) following the suspected discovery of 10 cases of the avian illness among students, reports AllHipHop.com.
University of Delaware President Patrick T. Harker says, "While the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have not yet confirmed any swine flu diagnoses, I have no doubt that these suspected cases are causing a great deal of concern among the entire campus community.
"The University’s first priority is the health and well-being of our students and employees. Therefore, we are working closely with the Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) to safeguard student, staff, and faculty health.â�� The first death from the swine flu epidemic currently gripping America was confirmed on Monday (27Apr09) - a Mexican infant who passed away in Texas.

The man who brutally attacked SUGABABES singer AMELLE BERRABAH’s ex-boyfriend has been jailed for 12 years.
Jimmy Wenman assaulted Freddie Fuller with a sharp object outside a pub on Christmas Eve 2007, while he was still dating the British pop star.
Fuller needed hours of life-saving surgery on his arms and legs after the attack, which was described as "savage" by prosecutors at Winchester Crown Court in England.
Wenman handed himself over to police two days later (26Dec07), after CCTV and mobile phone technology placed him at the crime scene.
The 30-year-old pleaded not guilty to one count of wounding with intent, but was found guilty by a jury earlier this year (09) and sentenced on Thursday (30Apr09).

DAVE NAVARRO’s supergroup CAMP FREDDY have pulled out of a planned concert in Cancun, Mexico - because the swine flu epidemic is too "serious" for the band to travel to the country.
The jam band - which also features Velvet Revolver’s Matt Sorum, former The Cult bassist Billy Morrison and Chris Chaney, from Navarro’s former band Jane’s Addiction - was expected to play in the city on 18 May (09), reports Blabbermouth.net.
Morrison says, "The upcoming CAMP FREDDY show in Mexico has been cancelled due to the outbreak of swine flu currently sweeping the country.
"We are waiting to hear if the event will be rescheduled elsewhere on another date, but the trip to Cancun is off the table. It’s a pity as we were all looking forward to a few days on the beach, but the situation in Mexico is serious and there was no option but to pull the show. Let’s hope the authorities get that situation under some control." The Camp Freddy concert is the latest showbiz event to be claimed by the spread of the potentially-fatal illness - Hugh Jackman’s Mexico City premiere for new movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which was scheduled for Wednesday (29Apr09), was also scrapped.

An overzealous fan of TYRA BANKS has been convicted of stalking and harassing the supermodel-turned-talk show host.
Brady Green, 38, was convicted of stalking, harassment, criminal trespass and attempted aggravated harassment by Manhattan Criminal Court Judge James Burke on Thursday (30Apr09).
Green was arrested on 18 March (08) at a restaurant near the New York studio where Banks films The Tyra Banks Show and told officers the pair "had a thing together" after a months-long bid to meet and seduce the beauty.
He was accused of sending 35-year-old Banks flowers, packages and notes, and threatening her assistant when she refused to reveal the star’s address.
Banks took the stand on Wednesday morning (29Apr09) as the first witness for the prosecution, telling the court she had to bolster her security team and feared for her own safety and the safety of her family and staff members as a result of Green’s actions.
His lawyer plans to appeal the conviction.
Green’s sentencing is scheduled for 18 June (09); he faces up to 90 days in jail.
