JAVIER BARDEM was forced to watch his girlfriend PENELOPE CRUZ’s Oscar win from his sick bed - after suffering a herniated disc during filming for a forthcoming movie.
The Spanish star was noticeably absent when Cruz claimed the Best Supporting Actress statuette for her performance in Vicky Cristina Barcelona at last month’s (Feb09) prizegiving in Los Angeles.
But it has now emerged that Bardem was ordered to rest up after sustaining the spinal injury on the set of Biutiful on 12 February (09), according to Spain’s El Pais publication.
He has since recovered and returned to work last week (begs23Feb09).
A source says, "Javier has returned to shooting and is in perfect health."

Actress MARIA CONCHITA ALONSO has blasted her COLORS co-star SEAN PENN for his outspoken political views about her native Venezuela, insisting he should "shut up" and stop showing his support to the country’s "killer" president, HUGO CHAVEZ.
Milk star Penn has voiced his admiration for Chavez on numerous occasions - the actor visited the politician in 2007, when he was writing an article about the leader, and caught up with him again in 2008.
In a 2007 interview following his first trip to the South American country, Penn said: "The first thing I’m going to say is that we know more lies about him in the United States than we know truth. If you want a soundbite from me about Chavez, then I would say that, for the moment, he’s much more positive for Venezuela than he is negative." And while Alonso, who appeared alongside Penn in the 1988 film, admits Penn is a great actor, she is angry he is publicly backing Chavez, who has been criticised for his controversial leadership.
She tells TMZ.com, "He’s an amazing actor, I can’t take that away from him. It’s just that he has no clue at all what’s going on in Venezuela. He’s praising Hugo Chavez, who’s a killer and a dictator. I tried to put aside his political thing that he has no clue (about), so he should just shut up about what he doesn’t know." And the Latina was particularly incensed when she saw Penn win the Best Actor Oscar at last month’s (Feb09) Academy Awards.
She recalls, "I put it on mute. I was watching in my room… So when his turn came, I mute it (sic). When he comes on stage (to collect the prize), I was like, ‘No!’"

BRITNEY SPEARS has been unveiled as the new spokesmodel for U.S. clothing company Candies.
The pop superstar’s comeback has been given a big boost from the female fashion firm as she prepares to kick off her world tour on Tuesday (03Mar09) night, after being named the 2009 Candies Girl.
And she is giving Candies fans a special treat - they can log on to the website on Monday (02Mar09) night to view the world premiere of her Circus tour video and have the chance to win a pair of VIP tickets to her sold out Los Angeles gig on 17 April (09).

Pop star KATY PERRY is hooked on beauty pageant reality show LITTLE MISS PERFECT - because it’s brought up memories of her own experience as a child model.
The I Kissed A Girl hitmaker reveals she was entered into beauty competitions as a kid, and watching the U.S. TV programme has brought out her desire to relive her childhood.
She writes on her official blog, "I have been in Europe for almost three weeks… and have obviously missed the best thing that has ever hit television.
"To tell the truth… my mom entered me in one or two of these things. The first one was just at your local grocery store… I got 2nd place. It wasn’t a hard race… just between a couple of other girls in the grocery store and then I faintly remember doing a REAL pageant when we lived in Lake Havasu, (Arizona) and I competed… and got 2nd place. 2ND PLACE IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH…
"I bet it was cause mom cut corners… took her own pictures, over-Swarovski (over-adorn) a jacket or something. Actually, you could probably not ever OVER swarovski ANYTHING in a Little Miss Perfect pagent (sic)! That is why I NEED TO COMPETE NOW. Even though I am 24, I still wear those same outfits… and still have my hair and makeup done like that… I am THEM. Plus I know exactly what I’d say if ANY question was picked outta a fish bowl… I mean I’ve done probably 5,000 interviews by now, I am READY for any curve ball!" But she concedes she may have missed her chance now she’s an adult - so instead she’s planning ahead for her kids.

Rapper CAM’RON has ended more than a year of estrangement from his DIPSET crewmember JIM JONES after enjoying a "cordial" conversation and discussing the possibilities of a reunion.
The Oh Boy hitmaker has been absent from the mainstream hip-hop scene since his 2006 offering Killa Season, after falling out with his pals amid allegations of questionable business dealings.
But Cam’Ron insists he is back on speaking terms with many of his Dipset bandmates - and is open to bringing the crew back together for a show this summer (09).
He tells MTV.com, "Everybody has been reaching out. I’ve been the one kinda saying Cam is going to take time do Cam. But (Dipset artists) Hell Rell and J.R. (Writer) definitely been reaching out. I called (Freekey Zekey’s) phone four or five days ago and Jim picked up Zeke’s phone. Me and him spoke for about 10 or 15 minutes…
"It was cordial. He knew it was me. He said we was gonna holla - maybe we’ll put something together. But in the immediate future, I’m just doing Cam. But you never know what can happen down the line. …We just talked, asked about each other’s family. He said he’s on a promo tour. He’d be back soon. That was that." Of a possible reunion, Cam’ron adds, "You never know. You never could say never. Right now, I’m kinda like in Cam zone. They been doing what they been doing for the past two or three years, but… you never could say what could happen in the future."

Singer/actor TYRESE GIBSON must hand over $65,000 (£46,000) to his estranged wife NORMA as a divorce settlement, a judge has ruled.
The former model filed for divorce from Norma in January (09), citing irreconcilable differences following 10 months of marriage.
Norma challenged Gibson’s petition and accused him of being a bad father to their two year old daughter Shayla.
She also requested a judge grant her some financial compensation, even though the union was so brief, because "(Gibson) earned roughly $800,000 (£567,375) during the 10 months of marriage".
On Monday (02Mar09) a U.S. judge made a temporary ruling in her favour - making Gibson pay $6,230 (£4,420) a month in support, $2,730 (£1,935) to cover her rent, and a further $800 (£568) towards her car payments.

POISON drummer RIKKI ROCKETT has dismissed a fall-out with fellow rockers DEF LEPPARD - insisting the bands share a "real mutual respect".
Rockett’s group was reported to have clashed with Def Leppard singer Joe Elliott in June 2008 after the star criticised Poison’s music - accusing them of lacking "substance" in their songs and relying too much on their 1980s image.
Poison frontman Bret Michaels hit back - slamming the British group for allegedly lip-syncing during a performance on U.S. TV show Dancing With The Stars.
But Rockett has now taken to his MySpace.com blog to insist the row was exaggerated - and confirmed the bands’ planned jaunt with veteran rockers Cheap Trick this summer (09) will go ahead.
He writes, "Folks keep askin’ me, ‘Are you really touring with DEF LEPPARD this summer?’ The answer is, Yes! Not only that, CHEAP TRICK is on the bill as well! Now, some of you are wondering things like, ‘I thought POISON and Joe Elliott hated each other?’ Well, not at all.
"Bret (Michaels, POISON singer), Joe and myself got a little carried away last summer takin’ the p**s outta each other. The fact is, I think there is a real mutual respect between us. After all, both of our bands have withstood the test of time. Life is short, let’s get rocked!"

ROB LOWE has been ordered to stay out of the sun after his TV bosses objected to him becoming too tanned.
The actor, who plays Senator Robert McCallister on hit U.S. show Brothers & Sisters, lives in sunny Montecito, California with his wife and their teenage sons and is an avid sportsman.
But the 44-year-old star had to give up playing outdoor sports with his family after his bosses were angered by his sunkissed complexion.
He says, "I got a phone call from the president of ABC who said, ‘You’re getting too dark. Seriously, stay out of the sun.’ I go, ‘I’m not tanning. I’m active. I surf and I kayak.’" And Lowe blames his pale co-stars for him now having to slather on the sunscreen before stepping outside.
He adds, "If you stand next to Calista Flockhart, anybody’s going to look like (singer) Harry Belafonte. I wear (sunscreen) over my entire face and a hat that has a chin strap. I look like the biggest idiot."

EMILY BLUNT pored over British monarch Queen Victoria’s diaries to prepare for her title role in THE YOUNG VICTORIA.
The actress was granted access to Windsor Castle in England, where she was allowed to closely inspect the monarch’s personal notebooks and letters.
And she admits she was moved by how the young Victoria came across in her correspondence.
Blunt says, "I didn’t know anything about her as a younger woman, so I did a lot of research. I read everything I could - they even let us into Windsor Castle to read her diaries and letters.
"You can hear her voice when you see her writing - which is illegible, by the way. Everything is underlined, and she was a very emotional creature. As a young woman she loved ballet and singing, and would be up at four in the morning dancing while (her husband) Albert would be conked out by 11pm. She really did like to have a good time."

LYNDA CARTER has officially passed the WONDER WOMAN baton to actress ELIZA DUSHKU, insisting she’d make a great comic book heroine.
Carter, who played the iconic character on TV in the 1970s, insists the world needs a new Wonder Woman - and if reports suggesting director Joss Whedon is set to launch a new franchise with Dushku are correct, the original star would be thrilled.
She tells WENN, "I’ve always liked Joss, and Eliza would make a great Wonder Woman." Carter has even offered her services to help groom the next Wonder Woman.
She adds, "People worry about, ‘I really helped with this movie and I didn’t get paid,’ which I could care less about. People don’t usually contact the original people to find things out because they’re afraid of being sued claiming it was their idea. I hope if they make the movie it makes a bajillion (millions) dollars, which means they’ll continue to make them."

Funnywoman SARAH SILVERMAN has reportedly threatened to quit her hit show THE SARAH SILVERMAN PROGRAM after learning the budget for the series has been slashed by over $250,000 (£177,000) per episode.
The comedy was due to begin shooting its third season this year (09) - but the programme has allegedly fallen victim to the current global credit crunch, with its budget falling from $1.1 million (£780,140) to $850,000 (£602,835) per show.
And the drastic cuts have infuriated Silverman and fellow executive producers Dan Sterling and Rob Schrab - with the trio vowing to walk out if the figures are not adjusted, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The forthcoming season has yet to be picked up by broadcasters Comedy Central, but a deal is expected to be agreed later this week (begs02Mar09).

Veteran actress JANE FONDA was taken aback by the publicity photos for her upcoming run in Broadway show 33 VARIATIONS - because the undoctored shots made her look old.
The 71-year-old star will perform her first Broadway show in 46 years when the Moises Kaufman production debuts next week (09Mar09).
And Fonda, who turned heads in the 1960s as sci-fi sex kitten Barbarella, admits she’s struggling to accept the ageing process.
She writes on her blog, "Looking at these more realistic, unadorned photos of myself, I had to take a deep breath, and… allow myself to acknowledge, I mean really allow the truth in - I am old. I am matronly.

Troubled couple RIHANNA and CHRIS BROWN have fuelled reports of a reconciliation after they were spotted disembarking the same private plane in Los Angeles on Monday (02Mar09) morning.
Brown was arrested and charged with making criminal threats following an alleged altercation with the Umbrella hitmaker on 8 February (09), which is said to have left Rihanna in need of hospital treatment.
Rihanna’s father confirmed the young lovers had split after the fracas - but reports emerged over the weekend (28Feb-01Mar09) that they were patching up their differences during a stay at rap mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ Miami, Florida residence.
And the first snaps of the pair have now surfaced - photos of the stars entering the same Miami airport on Sunday (01Mar09) night and video footage of the two stepping off the plane after landing in L.A. have been posted on TMZ.com.
In the video, Rihanna can be seen leaving the aircraft moments ahead of Brown - before appearing to get into the same waiting car.
Brown, who was freed on bail following his arrest, is due in court in Los Angeles on Thursday (05Mar09) for an arraignment hearing.

Actress KATIE HOLMES has lashed out at the media for spreading hurtful rumours about her family with TOM CRUISE, insisting "enough is enough".
The couple welcomed daughter Suri in April 2006 but the tot was not unveiled to the public until months later, prompting the media and internet gossips to speculate about the existence of the baby.
Little Suri made her public debut in a family photo spread in the October 2006 issue of Vanity Fair, in which Holmes defended their actions, saying: "We weren’t trying to hide anything… I do know what is being said in the press. This is my future. This is my family and I care so much about them. The stories are not okay. It eats away at me because it’s just not okay." However, rumours about the Cruise family and their Scientologist beliefs have continued to swirl - and Holmes is infuriated with the persistent claims.
She tells the new issue of Glamour magazine, "Some of the stuff (people said) was such absolutely horrible things to say about a child. It was so uncalled for and so disgusting. Enough is enough." The Batman Begins star credits Cruise with helping her through that difficult period: "We were changing diapers. He said, ‘I don’t want you to get upset.’ And I said, ‘Well, I am upset.’ So we approached it together…
"I definitely felt like - as a woman, as the mother of Suri - I want to handle this! My mum is very strong, and if anyone ever said anything about any of us, she would be, ‘Excuse me? That’s my family!’" And Holmes is so determined to prove to the couple’s critics just how normal their family life is - she would happily extend an invitation to visit their home.
Addressing her detractors, she says, "Why don’t you come over and have dinner? See what there is to see."

Hollywood actor TOM CRUISE has threatened legal action against the owners of a T-shirt company who allegedly plan to use his image to promote garments featuring the slogans "Sex Addict" and "Everything Turns Me On".
The Top Gun star’s lawyer, Aaron Moss, has issued a stern warning to the people behind Addictiontee.com, citing false advertising and consumer fraud in a bid to thwart their design plans.
It is thought the threatened legal action centres on the company’s plans to use a picture of Cruise apparently wearing one of the controversial T-shirts.
According to TMZ.com, Moss writes in the warning letter, "…we believe that such photograph is a fake that has been ‘Photoshopped’ or otherwise manipulated to make it look like he’s wearing your t-shirt." But the clothing firm’s bosses are undeterred - and are even considering taking inspiration from the legal threat for a new T-shirt design.
A spokesman for Addictiontee.com says, "We’re going into production of a t-shirt inspired by Cruise’s attorney with the words ‘legal addict’ on the front and ‘I sue everybody’ on the back."

Music mogul SIMON COWELL managed to talk his way out of a traffic ticket in California at the weekend (28Feb09) after striking up a conversation with the police officer about his fellow AMERICAN IDOL judges.
The usually sharp-tongued Brit was pulled over by a cop for failing to wear his seat belt and failing to display his car registration plate during a drive through Beverly Hills.
But Cowell worked his charm on the officer, laughing and joking about other American Idol stars the policeman had pulled over in the past - and was let go with just a warning.

FALL OUT BOY rocker PETE WENTZ refuses to answer the door to visitors - because he is convinced he will be murdered.
The bass player, previously diagnosed with bipolar disorder, admits he is so paranoid he ignores a knock at the door to lessen the chances of falling victim to violence.
He says, "I refuse to answer my front door because I’m convinced someone is going to murder me. I used to think that some day I’d end up murdering a close friend or relative. Now it’s reversed and I’m convinced it’s going to happen to me.
"That’s the way I’m going out (going to die), I’m completely sure of it. So I refuse to answer the front door - it greatly minimises that risk."

GOOD CHARLOTTE rocker BENJI MADDEN is relieved his twin brother JOEL has finally shared the news of his impending fatherhood with fans - because the guitarist was struggling to keep it a secret.
Joel Madden broke the happy news on the band’s official website last month (Feb09), announcing he and girlfriend Nicole Richie were expecting a little brother or sister for one year old daughter, Harlow.
Benji admits he has known about Richie’s pregnancy for a while - and is ecstatic he can finally celebrate becoming an uncle once again.
He says, "You have to wait before you can tell people. I found out a little bit earlier. We’re twin brothers so we share everything.
"(It’s) exciting. They’re the best parents I’ve ever seen." But, despite his Good Charlotte bandmates all settling down and having kids, Benji - who split from socialite Paris Hilton last year (08) - insists he’s not ready to follow suit just yet.
He adds, "The family vibe in our band is really strong right now and we’re all really enjoying that. I’m the last single guy in the band so I get to dive into the music a little more, which I love. My life is great right now. It’s wonderful.
"I’m great with kids and I absolutely want kids when the time is right and I have the right partner. I’ll bring them on tour. They’ll be little rock ‘n’ roll kids."
