THE READER IS ‘WORST HOLOCAUST FILM EVER MADE’

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 8:33 am

KATE WINSLET’s Oscar-nominated performance in THE READER has been slammed by a Holocaust expert, who is calling for the film to be ignored at the forthcoming Academy Awards ceremony.
The British actress tackled the role of Hanna Schmitz; an illiterate Auschwitz guard who is put on trial for horrific war crimes.
Winslet has been highly praised for her work in the movie - picking up a Golden Globe and a Bafta award for the part. She is highly tipped to take home the Best Actress trophy at the Oscars ceremony next weekend (22Feb09).
But Ron Rosenbaum, a journalist who wrote the critically acclaimed book Explaining Hitler, has slammed The Reader - branding it the "the worst Holocaust film ever made".
In a damning article in online magazine Slate, Rosenbaum writes, "This is a film whose essential metaphorical thrust is to exculpate Nazi-era Germans from knowing complicity in the Final Solution." He also suggests the movie sympathises too much with Winslet’s character, and persuades the audience to feel as though "illiteracy is something more to be ashamed of than participating in mass murder".

HARTNETT WINS BEST NEWCOMER FOR WEST END DEBUT

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 8:33 am

JOSH HARTNETT’s West End debut has garnered him the respect of Britain’s theatre fans - he picked up the award for best newcomer for his role in RAIN MAN at the Theatregoers’ Choice Awards on Sunday (15Feb09).
The Pearl Harbor star accepted his prize from Los Angeles for his portrayal of Charlie Babbitt, a role made famous by Tom Cruise in the 1988 film of the same name.
And Hartnett insisted he was honoured to receive an award that had been voted for by theatregoers.
He said via videolink, "Being on stage in the West End production of Rain Man was a thrilling new experience.
"Everyone worked incredibly hard, and made me feel welcome. I am thankful to the audiences for coming out and supporting us." Former Dr Who actor David Tennant was also praised on the night - his return to the stage in Hamlet was named theatreland’s event of the year by voters - despite the star missing most of his performances due to a recurring back problem.
Revered British talent Kenneth Branagh walked away with the best actor award for his turn in Ivanov, while the prize for best actress was given to Katy Stephens for The Histories.
Jersey Boys, which tells the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, took home all four of the prizes it was up for, including best new musical and best actor in a musical for Ryan Molloy, who plays the late singer.

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES’ SAME-SEX SMOOCH

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 8:30 am

Bosses on U.S. TV hit DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES have come up with a steamy way to keep viewers interested following the departure of blonde bombshell NICOLLETTE SHERIDAN - they are planning a passionate same-sex kiss between TERI HATCHER and EVA LONGORIA PARKER.
The ABC show announced Sheridan, who plays Wisteria Lane’s resident man-eater Edie Britt, would be written out of the show in the forthcoming season.
And to keep the show’s ratings on top, TV execs have thought of a novel way of enticing TV fans to tune in - some girl-on-girl action, according to Celebuzz.com.
A source tells the website, "Anything is kind of possible right now. You’ve got Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice basically becoming one two-hour show, the longest Dancing With the Stars tease ever.
"I don’t think a kiss between Eva and Teri’s characters could be ruled out, especially if it keeps people interested in the show."

JAGGER HAILS BRITAIN’S GRAMMY WINNERS

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 8:30 am

SIR MICK JAGGER has heaped praise on Grammy winning U.K. acts COLDPLAY, ADELE and DUFFY - insisting he is proud of the talent emerging from the British music scene.
The Rollings Stones legend was pleased to see so many of his fellow Brits take home the prestigious U.S. music honours at last week’s (08Feb09) prizegiving.
Coldplay won three trophies at the ceremony, Adele won two, while Duffy walked away with her first.
Jagger was ecstatic to witness the wins - and believes current British performers are among the most exciting in the industry.
He tells Britain’s The Sun newspaper, "With British acts doing so well at the Grammys last week it’s proving to be a great period for homegrown talent right now.
"And what is so refreshing is the different styles that have been recognised - Coldplay, Duffy, Adele and Radiohead make up an eclectic bunch, proving there’s a lot of fresh British talent out there.
"I like that these acts have paid their dues in the way we had to. There certainly is an upsurge of diverse Brit acts breaking through in the U.S. and overseas - good to see it. Long may it continue."

MILLER: ‘I’VE BEEN AT WAR THIS PAST YEAR’

Posted in: Entertainment — PR-inside Entertainment News @ 8:27 am

Actress SIENNA MILLER has hit out at judgemental women - hinting that she’s had to face a barrage of criticism from fellow females following her romance with married oil heir BALTHAZAR GETTY.
The British beauty was at the centre of scandal involving the Brothers & Sisters actor after he reportedly cheated on his wife with her last year (08).
The relationship came just weeks after Miller reportedly dumped Welsh actor Rhys Ifans after he had proposed three times.
Getty later slammed the mistreatment of the actress by the tabloid press, admitting he wished he had spoken out to defend the star, saying, "Historically, women always get the short end of the stick." And Miller agrees - insisting she doesn’t understand why women turn on each other instead of offering support.
She tells Britain’s Style magazine, "I’ve been at war, without a doubt. I’ve really experienced the judgement of women in the past year. It’s women who are holding us back. It’s women who are judging. I find it sad.
"We say we want to be on an equal path, but men don’t sit around bitching at each other. It’s very competitive. There’s no sisterhood."

Drawing From the Heart, at Claremont McKenna College, features self-portraits and paintings and drawings created over the past 40 years, and include sketches drawn during Cohen’s Zen study, and letters he wrote to his mentor at the monastery.

Jay-Z, who discovered Rihanna in 2004, initially refused to be drawn into commenting about the Brown/Rihanna fracas, telling HollyScoop.com, "It’s not a soundbite, this is a real situation. You have to have compassion for others. Just imagine it being your sister or mom and then think about how we should talk about that." But he added, "I just think we should all support her. She’s going through a tough time. You have to realise she’s a young girl, as well. She’s very young." Both Brown and Rihanna have gone into hiding since the incident, which prompted the former lovers to cancel their appearances at last week’s (08Feb09) Grammy Awards.
