STREEP’S DOUBTS OVER AWARD CEREMONIES
Actress MERYL STREEP is saddened only a handful of movies get the recognition they deserve - because so many films are competing for major awards.
The 59-year-old is currently receiving critical acclaim for her turn in religious drama Doubt - but she is concerned about the heavy influx of big screen ventures.
The actress is worried some classic films are overlooked because huge movies, such as Brad Pitt’s The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button - which has garnered 13 Academy Award nominations - receive so much attention.
She says, "I think in this climate it’s so hard for the 300 films a year that aspire to the awards circuit to find their way to the forefront, so I’m in two minds about these things. I think they serve a purpose, but it’s the same films you always hear about. There are a lot of great films - there are at least 12 to 14 wonderful films this year." But Streep is still delighted she is shortlisted for the Best Actress gong for Doubt at this month’s (22Feb09) Oscars.
She adds, "I’m very, very honoured to be nominated. When actors say it’s the nomination that matters, not the winning or losing, they really mean it.
"Nominations come from your fellow actors, so it tells you that your peers approve of what you’ve done. I’m always very touched by it. And then of course I’m excited and nervous about the awards ceremony, and I get into a sweat about what to wear.", The nod tops a storming awards season for the star, who has already been handed major gongs at the Screen Actors Guild and Critics’ Choice Awards ceremonies.
